Leftist flags and bumper stickers everywhere. Sad whoever runs the store can't keep their politics out of a historical site. The creator would shudder.

This place is pretty cool and relaxing. Great place for a stop over, have a picnic and than continue on. a great view of the desert and a small boulder park ourside

Great spot to view the desert on clear crisp morning you can see forever breathtaking you can access the old highway on a hike the stone sculpture zoo very cool just watch out for ufos and aliens!!

The views were alright. The lookout tower was pretty neat. We brought our dog and had just planned on letting him go potty. The owner said to bring him up that they are dog friendly. Within seconds a large German Shepard comes up behind us and attacks our dog. Their dog went straight for the neck but I just jerked my dogs leash and picked him up. My boyfriend had to keep the dog away as I hurriedly went to the car and we left. Terrifying experience and don’t recommend anyone with dogs to go here. Their dogs will attack!

I'm rating this place as excellent because it met our expectations. It's like a quirky old curiosity shop with good views of the surrounding boulders. We liked the boulder park / sculpture park and the tower views. The host was nice and gave us good advice on where to stop for lunch. I wouldn't drive a long way to go here but I would stop in if I wasn't too far away. It's not a destination stop (in my opinion) but a good roadside attraction and a fun place to stop by and visit for an hour. It was $7.50 per person which seemed reasonable to us.

Found this place by coincidence, and decided to stop by. The owner there was super friendly, and gave me advice about my trip. The views were great, and the paintings were interesting. A really great stop along the way.

This was a happy accident stop, saw the Tower from the Intersrare going North and thought that would be neat to go up.
So it is $6.50 an Adult to go up the tower.
You also get to walk up and down around sandstone bolders.
Plus they have clean Toilets and luve Peacocks to see.
We spent about an hour here and it was very very relaxing.
The hosts are super friendly.
We would stop again if ever passing :)

It was my first time to visit this domineering structure that sits high above the desert floor despite passing the sign multiple times when driving on I-8 in years prior. Driving towards Imperial, CA I decided it was time to visit the tower. The views are spectacular from the outcrop where the tower is situated! The day I visited was a little hazy due to wildfires that were occurring across the border. However, on a clear day you would be able to see further. Especially if you pay the small fee to climb the tower. It's worth it! They have a telescope as well you can use(50 cents) to get closer views. I was able to locate my exact destination point with the telescope! Even through the haze! Exact location is 'classified';)
The building with the tower is filled with an assortment of souvenir items that range from gemstones, postcards, keychains, and trinkets. I highly recommend asking the caretakers about the rattlesnake eggs... They also have numerous books(not sure if they are for sale), antique items that include an antique organ that plays the punched out music paper roll... drawing a blank at the moment for its proper name... and some drink and snack items. The caretakers are welcoming and friendly, and have their pet canines freely roaming the property. Apparently one of their pet peacocks had escaped from its holding pen the day I visited and was eloquently voicing its newfound freedom.
There is also a boulder and caverns park that deserves the intrepid adventurer to explore. Some of the boulders are painted as animals or of people. Check it out! Restrooms and picnic tables are available, so you can refresh, relax, and spend time enjoying the area. With all the stress and demands we are subjected to these days, would it not be awesome to have some time to pause and slowly take in our surroundings? Life is considered by some to be a 'road trip', and Desert View Tower is one of those places you just have to check out on your own 'personal road trip'. Pun intended!;) Have fun!!

This is a quirky place off Interstate-8 near Jacumba. We stopped here on our way from Yuma to San Diego. It makes a great stop-over and the tower is filled with memorabilia. Views are great and it's simply a great place to chill-out before hitting the road again.

How much time should we allow a group of 10 & 11 year olds to climb rocks, explore the caves & grounds, and visit the shop & tower?

I would give it 2 hours depending in when you're going. I suggest going soon as after May it gets too hot to explore much.

No, it's not that type of place. It's a view point to look at the Imperial Valley etc.. There are short walks n really cool carvings to look at but you have to go down to the valley to get your Off-road Grove On..
