This winery is a great little gem in Kenwood. It's off the beaten track so it's not over run with van loads of pleasure seekers. This is a winery for true wine lovers! And the wine is top notch!

This was our third bi-annual Mothers/Daughters Winery Weekend in Sonoma County and we were looking for hidden gems for this trip. Some of our 8 had never been to CA wine country before and we wanted to jump right in to an intimate experience of an active vineyard. Marjorie was our host and guide and I can tell you she was even better than some of her best reviews. The walk through the vineyard was just a perfect way to start. But tasting wine under the huge oak tree with a red table cloth covered picnic table, fruit/cheese/chocolate plate pairing, and Marjorie reading prose as well as regaling us with stories of the vineyard and their family just could not be topped. One of the best experiences in Sonoma Valley.

The McLeod family winery is a hidden gem in Sonoma. Having toured several “family wineries” over the years, we came to realize we had missed a special, authentic place that clearly reflects the vision and dreams of a founding patriarch-George MacLeod. The winery is tucked away near Kenwood on series of ridges with a wonderful view. The tour we did provided a colorful story of the family, the site they selected, the development of the areas currently in production (about 30 acres), and the characteristics of the award-winning wines they produce. The tour we did included the tasting on beautiful hilltop setting with a beautiful view. Our tour guide, Marjorie MacLeod (family winery, right?), was gracious, informative, and allowed us to become immersed in the story and tradition of the winery in a way that makes you feel very connected to the property. We were also fortunate to have been there during harvest season and seeing the grapes on the vines, ready to pick, with the leaves changing color was spectacular. The tasting was leisurely, informative, and the small cheese and fruit plate contained items that complimented each of the wines. I love red zinafandels and now have a new favorite to go with Asian Pork Ribs I make often and my wife is anxiously awaiting the sauvignon blancs we ordered for some upcoming dinners and cheese plates. There are no crush pads, tanks, or bottling facilities on site given the small production that earns the family label, but the winemaking is all directed by another family member, Rich MacLeod. Be advised there is only one tour a day (which lasts a couple hours) and one afternoon tasting so call ahead and make a reservation since the number of guests for each event is limited. (The winery website is easy to navigate and highly informative and contains tour and tasting information.) We now have a new “must do” winery on our “Top 3” list of wineries we visit each time we go to Sonoma and are anxious to return to a place that allows you to connect with what viniculture is all about.

We were brought to this small private vineyard by Nigel from Bohemian Highway wine tours (highly recommend them). We told Nigel we didn't want the "branded" wineries but wanted intimate settings that were the hidden gems of the area. He set us up for our first appointment here. Marjorie one of the owner's greeted us and then took us on a magnificent walking tour of the vineyard and shared the history of how it came about. As we walked she showed us the grapes, vines, etc and educated us on what they look for and what makes the grapes ready to become wine. She even put us to work a little bit which was great! The tour was capped off by a magnificent wine tasting under a huge tree overlooking the vineyard. She had cheeses and chocolates to accompany the wines and the conversation with her was great. She and her husband love what they do and it is evident in the quality of their wines. I write this as I have a glass of their Sauvignon Blanc next to me and I find myself reminiscing on that day. If you want a great wine experience and fantastic wine this is a must! I will be back there to see her as she is now a friend.

My parents and I visited the Macleod Family Vineyard on Sat, February 24th, 2018. We were welcomed by the Macleod family and given a behind-the-scenes tour of the vineyard. We learned about pruning the vines in preparation for the growing season and heard about how the October 2017 fires had affected the community. I was impressed with how resilient the Macleod family is as well as their obvious dedication to growing high quality grapes. We concluded the tour with a generous wine tasting beneath a large tree in the vineyard. It was truly picturesque and the perfect end to a delightful morning in the Sonoma Valley.

We had a wonderful experience on our visit to MacLeod Family Vineyard! My friends' parents recommended that we visit this winery on our honeymoon as they happened to have worked with the owners back in the day. We had an easy time booking our tour and tasting online and were expecting to get a taste for Sonoma wine, see wine country, learn a little bit, and enjoy the food pairings. Our experience far exceeded our expectations!
First off, the people here are so incredibly friendly. It's really nice to see folks who are so excited to engage with their visitors and share stories. Marjorie greeted us warmly and introduced us to the two other couples in our group. They had all our names on a welcome sign, which was a nice touch. They had even drawn in wedding rings next to my and my husband's name since we are newlyweds! So sweet. From there, they took us up to the house to chat with George, the founder/owner of the vineyard.
George is 96 years old and still sharp as a tack. He talked to us all about the land, the varying factors that can impact the grapes and the wine, the relationships with his harvesters, using sulphur to keep mildew at bay, and so much more. We learned a ton! We live near the Finger Lakes region and I never got this level of depth of knowledge from a wine tasting/tour before. I want to meet an expert like George to learn more about FLX geology and wine now!
Next, we headed into the vineyard with Marjorie for the actual tasting and tour component. We got to eat some grapes straight off the vine, and learned a test for determining if grapes are ready to pick or not. After that, we had a chance to crush some grapes and drink fresh grape juice. It was so delicious! I could drink it all day.
The tasting and food pairing took place at a quaint picnic table under an oak tree in the middle of the vineyard. It was so lovely! The main wines they produce are Sauv Blanc, Merlot, and Zinfandel. We had a chance to try all three with pairings of dried apricot, dried blueberries, almonds, cheese, and chocolate. Everything was excellent, and made all the sweeter by the great company, conversation, and history we had learned throughout our visit.
I would highly recommend a visit to this winery! Worth every penny of the $25 for the tasting and tour.

We had the most amazing time wine tasting, picnicking, and touring the beautiful vineyard at the MacLeod Family Vineyard! The family that owns it is so passionate and learning about their history and what goes into each bottle of wine was such a genuine experience. We had a great time and already can't wait to go back!

One of the previous reviewers summed up this experience perfectly: it's like being part of a Robert Frost poem.
The recommendation came from a stranger, but it sounded like an interesting experience: yet "interesting experience" just doesn't quite capture it. I'd describe it a unique insight into wine country at a very personal level.
The tour starts with greetings from Marjorie McL and an introduction by George McLeod himself. He describes how he bought the place and how its evolved over the years. George meanders through the history of the vineyard; its like listening to grandpa passing on family folklore. Marjorie picked up the tour with a walk through the vines and a fascinating introduction to grape growing. Then we adjourned to taste some wine. We sampled three; and the sampling was generous, and accompanied with snacks. McLeod doesn't make a ton of wine but the wines we sampled had character and are very drinkable.
It's a timeless, poetic experience and a great way to spend the morning before heading off into the commercial grind of of wine country.

Where do I start? Didn't know what to expect when we pulled up. Marjorie was at the car to greet us. She took us out into the vineyard where we sat under a large oak tree and felt a gentle freeze on our arms as we sipped several wonderful wines. There are few places in this world where you can feel the love and this is one of them. There wasn't a dry eye in the house.
