A UNESCO heritage site, the ruins of this Buddhist Vihara are stunning. Although not much more than the foundations remain of the monastery, the stupa is amazing. The terracotta tiles are superb. Take a guide so that he can explain the various components to the Vihara as not much is marked.

Despite one traveller not impressed, it's a shame that people cannot appreciate ancient relics that have withstood war, climate change and foot traffic! I can see their point however, that to have some information signs would help to visualise how it might have looked in its heyday. The artwork in the mosaics was so skillful and interesting to look at, you can't fail to be impressed.

If you like old architecture, you must have to visit this impressive archeological site. This is one of the UNESCO sites among the three recognized site form Bangladesh. Looking at the central temple and surrounding 177 cells will remind you of an exclusive place where once people visit to seek for knowledge, meditation, judgment, intellectual argument, and important decision making for the state. Bangladesh was the heart of Buddhism, coeval approach of Muslim and Hindu decrease the power of Buddist in this region. It is said that this place had been burned by Vaga army in the 11th century though there was no major destruction found. There is a well-maintained museum where vast information is available with a collection of old relics from its prime time.

This UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the oldest Buddhist Viharas (universities) of world. This is an excavation and there is a beautiful museum inside. worth visiting. Spending time in the museum is worthy as it has a number of artifacts of the black stones, sand stones, terracotta; carvings are especially impressive (Photograph is not allowed and monitored by CCTV). This museum was opened in 1995 by the them Prime Minister of Bangladesh Mrs. Khaleda Zia. There is a well decorated garden outside this museum (trees are cut down in shapes of animals; elephants, giraffes and an assortment of other features). It's not allowed to climb to the top though visitors can walk through the site of the central building.Remains of the 177 monks dwelling cells are located on the perimeter surrounding the site. There are picnic areas, shades, clean male-female toilets, a mosque outside.Entrance ticket costs Taka 20 for locals and museum fee is also Taka 20. Foreigners have to pay $10 and $ 5. for Souvenirs and snacks are available outside the complex.

A Buddhist monastery dating from the 8th c, the area is the country’s most impressive archaeological site. It is massive at some 27 acres. Built by Dharmapala, the second Pala king, it had 177 monastic cells. The terraced central temple was done in cruciform shape, measuring a colossal 922' by 918'. The grounds are worth a stroll. The colour of the bricks would make for great photography in the late afternoon. There is a small museum on sitte.

Dharma Pala of Pala Dynasty ( 8 to 12 century) whose empires extended from Bengal ( ancient Bangladesh) to Afghanistan had built this monastery as a university. This is the biggest of all Buddhist Bihars in Indian subcontinent. This is situated in Naogaon District of Norther Bangladesh. This can be approached by roads from Bogra, where Mahastahngar - another great ancient ruins is situated. There is a museum where the artifacts found during excavation are kept.
