Went with a personal guide as this part of China, hardly anyone spoke English. Be prepare to walked a fair distance and lots of steps. Some carvings are so intricate and detailed, some has succumbed to the weather and the piece that was restored, for me spoiled the ancient feel. (pic on hands is the restored piece). Some still had the paint colours on.
Worth a visit - had to ask the guide to not go into so much detail into the religious side as we wanted to see the carvings and not a lesson in religion.
Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoist - interesting and so old.

Many of the 50,000 statues and religious carvings date back to the seventh century Tang Dynasty. They are spread over about 75 sites. Most are very well perserved.

When one thinks of holiday in Chongqing, the Dazu Rock comes to mind. It is the signature of Chongqing. There are also few rock carving of this magnitude in China. Alas, tourism has given rise to commercialism. Here is why.
There are 2 parts to the rock carvings. The first part to the most well preserved grottoes is within 5 minutes drive using the local open air bus (no personal vehicles are allowed). The second part is much further away less well preserved grottoes only accessible by tourism appointed transport vehicles. The problem starts from there. Upon arriving at the the Dazu rock carving entrance, there will be person standing next to the car door. He will recommend you take his private vehicle to the further away less well preserved grottoes. But there is a catch. He will drive you to have lunch in a restaurant and a souvenir shop before proceeding. It is a scam as the prices of food and items are all extremely high to make up for more than the transport. If you say no, you will proceed to the ticket counter for the better preserved grottoes. The ticket cost 10RMB. But they will recommend you engage a guide that will cost money to bring you on a tour as there are few descriptors at the grottoes. Once you reach the entrance, you are again given a choice to walk 20 mins to the nearest grottoes or take their local open air tour vehicle that cost 15RMB on 2 ways. The grottoes are well preserved and well worth the journey. Each grottoes tell a different story where you do need the guide to explain. They also have a museum that showcase some artefacts with little English explanations. If you are a non Buddhist, you probably will not understand much too. On your return trip via the open tourist vehicle, they will not leave until there are enough passengers. The wait can be as long as half hour if you are unlucky. So the trick is don't visit too early. Otherwise, you may have to wait a long time before the vehicle set off to bring you back to the end point. When you leave the end point, you need to walk a distance before you reach your tour bus. In the process that you are doing so, you will have to walk past at a place filled with shops selling fake jewellery, overpriced handicraft and restaurants all ready to rip tourist money.
Overall, the Dazu Rock Carving is a must visit as the spectacle is worth looking at. However, the grotsequely shameless plots by companies and tourism board to rip money from tourists leaves a bad after taste: a place where you only want to go once and never again.

We have seen a lot of different carving in China from the Leshan Buddha to the 1,000 Buddhas in Longman Grottoes, and these surpass them all. How they managed to carve these at the top of a mountain in the middle of nowhere itself is amazing, but the 1,000 handed Buddha is simply jaw dropping. Not easy to get to a off the tourist route which would usually skip this between Chengdu and Yangtze

I only had time to visit the Dazu Rock Carvings because there was an accident in the road and we lost 2 hours. But I remember there were several around not far from each other. You can move in public buses around them.

I get around by using my mobility scooter. Is the path to see the Dazu Rock Carvings handicap accessible friendly, ie. are there ANY steps involved along the entire way please? Or at all steep or sloped to one side or another making it unstable to sit in the scooter all the way please? If you are not sure, I can understand. Most people who are not in my predicament typically won't realize the problems we face and won't make a mental note to check. But if you do remember, that would be greatly helpful to me!!! Thanks!!!

From the main gate entrance there is quite a long way till the carvings site and along this way I cannot recall stairs but only if anybody likes to ring the big bells located in a small temple on the way. There is a possibility to avoid this temple and just continue in the way through the carving site. This site is accessible but going further reqires to climle throgh a steep way which is not recommended for the scooter. Instead, turn around and use the same way back to the main entrance and again skip the bells' temple and all the long way (maybe about two miles) back to the main gate. I hope that my memory is correct as this is the way I remember.

Hi, we are going on a China tour that ends in Chongqing and have decided to stay there for a day to go see Dazu rock carvings.
Can we get on a tour when we arrive at Dazu or do we need to organise one before that and if so can we organise it in Chongqing? Of course we would want English speaking.

We were on a CTS Horizons tour that went to Dazu on the way to Chengdu after the Yangtze cruise on Victoria Line Katarina - which was very good. It took almost 3 hours on the bus from Chongqing to Dazu - an hour to get out of town. Chongqing is the biggest city in China with a population of 33 million! We had just over 2 hours at Dazu. It was amazing. Your tour company should be able to arrange something. Trailfinders would be very good for that sort of thing.
