The shrine is about 5min from Dazaifu train station. The grounds are vast and there's also a museum located within. The bridge which went over the heart-shaped pond was impressive. It was incredibly crowded when I visited and it was difficult to fully take in the shrine's atmosphere.

Instead of paying for a tour guide and ride -- my wife, Patit and I decided on visiting Dazaifu Tenmangu on our own; With a comfortable walk to the Hakata bus station it was a relaxing ride, with no stops or transfers all the way to the "...the shrine of learning, culture, and the arts for more than a millennium." The cue to and from Dazaifu was bearable -- around 15-minutes -- and quite pleasante.

We walked around "one of Japan’s most important Shinto shrines, the head of 12,000 Tenjin shrines nationwide, and one of the top places to visit in Fukuoka. The shrine and its surroundings are ancient..." But there were enough modern amenities and well-curated exhibits in the Dazaifu Tenmangu Museum and the Kyushu Museum to make at least a half-day visit worthwhile.

After mingling with so many students and families praying for better performance in school --- the street shops close to the Tenjin Shrine had interesting items on sale with some cheaper than those in Fukuoka City, but exploring the peripheral side streets also provided what seemed to be a better and lower cost shopping experience.

Among the hundreds of Tenmangu Shrines throughout Japan, Dazaifu's (太宰府天満宮, Dazaifu Tenmangū) is the most important one alongside Kyoto's Kitano Tenmangu. Tenmangu Shrines are dedicated to the spirit of Sugawara Michizane, a scholar and politician of the Heian Period. Because of his great learning, Michizane has been associated with Tenjin, a Shinto deity of education, and is popular among students.

It was a rainy day and we decided to make a day trip to Dazaifu from Fukuoka by train. From Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station there are frequent trains to Nishitetsu Futsukaichi Station (15-25 minutes, served by all train categories typically within mint colored trains with red stripe from Track 2 ). The fastest train is the Nishitetsu-Tenjin-Omuta Line Limited Express.

NOTE: You must transfer at the Nishitetsu Futsukaichi Station to catch the Local Nishitetsu-Dazaifu Line towards Dazaifu (5 minutes, departures every 10-15 minutes). There is clear signage on where to go when you get off at this station.

The total journey from Nishitetsu Fukuoka Station to Dazaifu takes 25-40 minutes and costs 370 yen ($2.64 USD). Buy your one way ticket using cash at the ticket machines.

NOTE: You can also purchase a special Dazaifu, Yanagawa Punting or Dazaifu/Yanagawa Punting sightseeing tickets from the Tenjin Customer Service Center which combines Nishitetsu train round trip tickets and discount exchange coupon for various partner stores (restaurants, souvenirs, etc.). Check out their web site (ensen24.jp/kippu/en).

We took the express from Tenjin Station at 9:15 am and arrived at Dazaifu at 9:45 am.

Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is located a five minute walk east of Dazaifu Station. The entire road leading to the shrine from the station is an old Japanese street with shops selling snacks and souvenirs, including the umegaimochi and chocolate-covered Amaou strawberry.

Amaou strawberry is the pride of Hakata region because it is considered as one of the best, if not the best, strawberries in Japan.

Umegae Mochi: Traditional Sweets in Japan was invented in the town of Dazaifu, Umegae Mochi is a kind of sweet dumpling filled with red bean paste and wrapped in mochi – rice cake. There are many vendors cooking this traditional kind of sweet dumpling. I chose the vendors which make them right in front of you and give it to you hot off the grill. A must try!

The shrine itself is rather large, stretching about 250 meters from one end to the other. After passing through the torii gate at the entrance, you are greeted by the statue of an ox. it is believed that you can become smarter by rubbing its nose.

Visitors will then come across a pond that was built in the shape of the Japanese character for "heart". A path leads across two arched bridges and islands which represent the past, present and future.

After crossing the bridges, visitors approach a walled courtyard with the shrine's main hall (honden), whose current building dates back to 1591. The plum tree standing on the right of the main hall is the legendary tobiume (flying plum tree), which according to tradition flew from Kyoto to Dazaifu to accompany Michizane into exile. Michizane was fond of plum trees, and plum trees are typically found at Tenmangu Shrines. There are as many as 6000 of them on the grounds of Dazaifu Tenmangu, and are typically in bloom from late February to mid March.

A wide range of good luck charms can be purchased from the shops around the main hall. Most popular are education related charms which are supposed to help students pass exams. The shrine enjoys great popularity among students especially during the entrance exam season, when enormous amounts of ema charms can be seen hanging on the shrine grounds.

There’s a much quieter, more atmospheric inari shrine behind the main Dazaifu Tenmagu Shrine. It’s hidden away in the woods – you have to climb some stairs to get to it.

On the way back be sure to stop at the local Starbucks. Among the numerous Starbucks cafés in the entire country, there probably isn’t one more famous than Starbucks Dazaifu in Dazaifu, Fukuoka. This amazing outlet was designed by none other than world-renowned architect Kengo Kuma. Making use of some 2,000 pieces of these ‘thin woods’, the interior of Starbucks Dazaifu is literally cocooned by a weave of cedar wood, as if it were the inside of a giant hand-woven basket. The interwoven cedar wood batons are angled to create a diagonal lattice, with four sticks coming together at each connection. When you take a close look at it, each baton is a stocky 1-4 meters long, and 6 centimeters across; yet interlocked at the correct angle, the entire installation presents a fluid web that curves as it ‘moves’ inwards, drawing visitors in along with it.

If the weather is nice you can proceed to Yanagawa by train for the Punt (boat) tour and have an unagi lunch. Unfortunately, it was rainy so the Punts were not operating so we opted for lunch in Dazaifu. There are many ramen options such as the famous Ichiran, however we went to a local ramen shop (らーめん おいげん 豚骨らぁ麺・醤油らぁ麺) which I thought was much better!

All in all, a nice inexpensive day trip out to Dazaifu Temmangu.
