As someone who has used and cared for this trail for my whole life, I would like to ask anyone reading this to PLEASE CONSIDER FINDING A DIFFERENT ADVENTURE. This route is being damaged by overuse and is frankly quite dangerous, and there are alternative ways to access the beach and cliffs nearby.

This trail leads down through Box Canyon (I don't know the origin of the Ho Chi Minh or Saigon Trail names) to Black's Beach. It has long been used by local surfers, but in the past decade has become VERY popular from the internet.

The trail takes you down soft sandstone ledges above steep (>20 foot) drops, and it is very easy to slip and fall. As usage has grown, the rate of erosion in the canyon has greatly increased, and the trail is unrecognizable from its state a decade ago. Some sections are extremely steep and unstable. People need to be rescued from this canyon by professional S&R teams every year--please do not add to the burden on our first responders!

I encourage hikers and beachgoers to consider alternative routes to help preserve this beautiful and fragile canyon: Black's Beach can be accessed via the well-maintained road (with restrooms!) off of La Jolla Farms Road. The beautiful cliffs above Box Canyon can be accessed by way of the Glider port. And Torrey Pines to the north has wonderful cliffside hikes and a staircase that can take hikers down to the beach.

If you are still intent on exploring Box Canyon, please be prepared with sturdy shoes with good traction. Go with a buddy. Do not go when it has recently rained. Don't leave any trash. And if you feel unsafe, TURN AROUND!

BE CAREFUL!
Wear close-toe shoes with GRIP or you're going to slip and fall down. I definitely don't recommend this to kids or anyone who isn't an avid hiker. There's an upper and lower path but they're both sketchy at some point.
It's exceptionally busy in the summer and not enough room for more than one person to pass at a time. People can be rude and that leads to others falling.
I watched a girl slip and luckily there were enough people to grab her before she fell.

Well...what is a little anxiety when you are hiking in an area that you have never been? Much of the trail is fine, however, there are some extremely narrow areas that can be 120% challenging without the correct footwear. Caution is needed for the inexperienced.

This isn't a hard trail but can be slippery with dry sand. Areas are steep and I've seen people a. bit banged up from the hike. It leads from the top of La Jolla Farms road near the Salk institute between two homes all the way down to Black's Beach nude beach). Doesn't take long and suggest the Glider Port and trails around there for the same day.

If you are reading reviews tryin to decide if you should do this "hike" you probably shouldn't. It's more of a foot trail/scramble carved out by surfers to access Blacks Beach Surf, and frankly, it should stay to them. It is treacherous/dangerous at parts for someone inexperienced (and by inexperienced I mean this path specifically). The more foot traffic it sees the faster it will erode. It was fun, I did have a last, I did look like an annoying tourist and I did need help from a sweet gal hiking the trail. My friend slid off of the edge into the ravine below. The cliff is made of unstable sandstone. There is a section of 2x4 you need to need cross and a rope wrapped around a rock at the end.

If you do decide to walk down try to go with someone (preferably someone who's done it), stay to the right after the rock slide (the right side of the ravine vs the left), do NOT wear shoes, maybe bring water (in a backpack bc you'll want your hands free) to spray down to make the sand less slippery, be respectful of the locals, keep moving/don't lose momentum, pay attention to the weather as a recent rain will produce more sand runoff increasing how slippery it is, have fun!

This is a GREAT (and VERY challenging!) trail. As a reasonably fit 74-year old, it took my 1 hour (roundtrip) to ge to the beach and back. If you are not agile, and it pretty good shape, do NOT attempt this. The entry is hard to find--as the odd and even numbers are not always consistently on the same side of the street. I've attached a photo to show you wherre the entry is. It's the most difficult trail I've ever taken (not that I'm an avid or real experienced person on trails). But, I'm so happy I did it--partly for the view and challenge, and partly to be able to say to myself, "I did it!"

This trail offers nice views, but I promise you they are not worth it. I came on this hike with some friends not knowing the terrain. It is very dangerous and I would not recommended. This trail is not ideal for dogs and especially children. The cliff is steep with a drop off of about 20-30 feet. It gets very muddy towards the end and it becomes very hard to grip the ground. It's a struggle to make it down without falling and hitting every rock on the way down or worst falling over the cliff and landing on a rock and cracking your head or body. Seriously, this is an anxiety inducing hike with a lot of areas that will cause panic.

Listen, some people are saying not for the fain of heart. It's more than that. It is flat out dangerous! My gf and I went today down to the beach it leads too. Like many others have said it is easy until about half way. Once you go through the narrow rocks things get REAL, FAST! This cliff is eroding and I think it is getting worse and worse.

Not really worth the risk of a 20 foot fall. IMO
