Amazing candelabra trees and ocean views! The 6 mile road to get here is very narrow with many potholes and steep cliff drop. Definitely need a high clearance vehicle.

Almost wilderness. Difficult to get to, which helped make it quiet and uncrowded. Would have stayed and camped a couple of days if I had thought about it.

Usal road is not for the faint hearted, and best with a high clearance vehicle. In summer the road is safe to the campground at the beach, but I wouldn't advise going beyond.

This is an a typical TripAdvisor destination. More for the camping and hiking crowd. Be prepared before you set off on this trek. You will most likely have limited to no cell service on this road. The road is narrow and at times it would be hard to have two cars pass each other. If my vehicle was not Toyota 4Runner I most likely would have turned around before getting to the end of the road (Shady Dell). You can make it in a sedan, but there a some decent sized ruts. If you are apprehensive about heights there is a short stretch with step drop-offs and no guardrails. There was a pit toilet at Shady Dell that had toilet paper.

The candelabra redwood trees are in a remote location but they are accessible by car off a dirt road (Usal Road) an hour or so north of Mendocino. The trees are located just off Usal Road on the Peter Douglas Trail.
Usal Road is about a 20-25 minute drive north of the town of Westport. After Highway 1 leaves the coast and heads in an easterly direction, I think there is only one exit off to the left and this is Usal Road. It is marked by a white sign and there is some lewd painting on the asphalt in front of the turn off.
Once on Usal, you will drive for about 45 minute in order to reach the northern start of the Peter Douglas Trail. The trees are about a 5-minute walk up the trail.
Usal road is a single lane with a few turnouts. It is steep, curving and bumpy. If you meet a car coming in the opposite direction, passing will be tricky. I made the trip in a 2WD SUV. I think the road is probably passable in a low clearance car - I saw a compact car at the trailhead. However, a high clearance SUV would be preferable.
Along the road, you will have great views of the cliffs and ocean.
You will pass a few signs for the Peter Douglas Trail but you need to continue until you reach the northernmost trailhead. It is just before the Usal Creek Bridge. If you cross the bridge, you have gone to far. There is a pullout at the trailhead and a flat pasture where you can park your car.
The path is clearly marked. It is a short 5 minute walk uphill on railway tie stairs to reach the trees. There is a bench where you can sit and enjoy the scenery.
Usal Road is not open year round. It is open roughly from May through October. It is maintained by Caltrans and it is advisable to call them to confirm the condition of the road and whether it is open.
Plan your visit so that you have enough daylight to drive back out. It would be treacherous and dangerous in the dark.
There is no cell service.
Dogs are allowed on a leash.
There are no bathrooms or services.
I visited on a Monday afternoon in June. We saw three other cars/groups of visitors on the road.
The entire trip including a short walk and time for photos will take a minimum of 2.5 hours. On my next visit, I will allow more time and walk more of the trail.
The candelabra redwoods make a good day trip from Mendocino. For my visit, I spent the previous night at Timber Cove Resort in Jenner (outstanding) and drove up the next day stopping for lunch in Ft. Bragg before continuing on to Usal Road. After my visit, I returned to Mendocino for the night.
For photographers, if it is sunny there will be dappled light on the trees. A wide angle lens might be helpful.
