For several years my husband and I have gone to John Thurman Field to watch the Modesto Nuts play excellent minor league baseball followed by a wonderful fireworks show. The ballpark is clean and nicely maintained, the staff is friendly and professional, and we’ve always had a great experience there.

Summary, John Thurman Field is a good place to enjoy a Minor League Baseball game. Be aware that it can be uncomfortably hot for the first few innings of an evening game. There are plenty of near by, reasonably priced restaurants to get a good meal before the game.
It has been nearly two years since we were last at John Thurman Field. This time we sat in seats high in Section 204 and low, at field level, in Section 107. High in Section 204 was excellent for a hot Sunday evening game because it was about the only place that had shade at 6 PM. Right Field Bleachers were the next to have shade. Being high gives you a good view of the entire field. You can also see just how close a 95mph inside fast ball gets to the batter and how little time a batter has to avoid it. Section 107 is behind the Visiting Team Dugout. It is almost like being on the field but protected by a net from line drive foul balls.
There are a few negatives. Modesto can be hot during baseball season. The two games we attended the temperate at game time was over 90F. Concessions are ball park poor. Corn dogs were warm and far from crispy. I do not know what they do to the 7 UP but it did not taste like 7 UP. Cheeseburger Basket could be so much better. The cheeseburger was ok. The fries were barely warm and limp. The more they cooled off the less eatable they became. Popcorn was stale. As I noted in a review two years ago, the water fountains barely work.
Do not let the negatives keep you from enjoying a Minor League Baseball game. 8

We stopped by here when we in the area and caught a game. Friendly staff kinda surprised by the 6.00 parking fee though. Overall a good time

We had fun watching the ball game and enjoyed some munchies from the concession stand. The fireworks program was heartwarming and exhilarating. Good family fun and affordable.

A nicely maintained, older minor league stadium. Ticket and concession prices are reasonable. There isn't much legroom in the "Hall of Fame" seating, so taller fans may want to choose elsewhere. (Much better ADA seating than Excite! Ballpark though.)

John Thurman Field, I suspect, started life as a WPA Baseball Field that has been upgraded with aluminum seats. This can be good and bad. The good is that the stands are very clean. The difference in elevation between the rows is sufficient to be able to see over the person in front of you. I personally like the seats higher in the stadium so I can see the whole field. The downside is that the stairs are a bit more difficult to negotiate that at a more traditional stadium. The aluminum is noisy, especially when children stomp their feet and continually run up and down the stairs.
Ticket prices are reasonable. The California League decree that bans outside food has caused us to discover good inexpensive restaurants and sandwich shops near the ballpark where we can get a good meal before the game. About the only thing we buy at the park is an occasional bag of peanuts.
In summary, John Thurman Field is a good place to see a minor league baseball game. However, it clearly is not up to the standards set by Raley Field, Banner Island (Stockton Ballpark) or Excite Ballpark (San Jose Municipal Stadium).

Great field to watch the Nuts play. You can hear the players talk and the ball hit the glove. The beer and food is good and the prices less than at Oracle.

I remember how impressed I was when they completed the last remodel of the stadium. They still do a great job of greeting fans and making them feel welcome. However, the seats are looking a bit weather beat and they do not have the food service that they used to have. I have found that they often run out of food and they are pretty slow. Not a real impressive menu either, and the quality is not very impressive.
