We went on a several tours of green businesses and organic farms. They were amazing in many respects. First the people we met. Next we learned so much! and finally the food was superb. All of this for a very reasonable cost.

Bay Area Green Tours is an authentic touring company! BAGT is thorough in their quest to research and identify locations, people, and events that are consistent with their mission of educating around localism and a cyclical ECO-nomy. They provide the connections between the local context and the bigger picture and inspire action towards a sustainable, regenerative future. Marissa’s on-the-pulse connections create unique and non-“tourist” experiences that are organized and professionally delivered. I’m honored to have been a visiting guide on a custom tour we developed around the local textiles and maker community in Oakland. The tour included personal studio visits with local makers, a lunch stop at a local artisanal eatery, wine tasting and ended with a sewing workshop where the participants created a collaborative wall hanging as a keepsake for the honoree’s birthday.

Bay Area Green Tours is a one of a kind experience. The tour of Dog Patch was my second adventure with Marissa and her great team. Having lived in San Francisco for a very long time and always enjoying some history of my beloved town, I was looking forward to learning more about a neighborhood we've watched smoothing its rough edges over the past few years.
BAGT did not disappoint! Just a couple of days after the New York Times gave a shout out to the transformations taking place, there we were in the heart of what's going on in Dog Patch. Susie Barnard is a well known long time SF painter. What a treat to hear not only her history as an artist by the bay, but the history of the old Noonan building and surrounds.
Kimberly Austin's studio next door was a combination art lesson and historical tour of printing and cutting. What an enlightening look into handmade cards, candles and art.
The Workshop Residence was another educational and artful experience where we learned about the storefront's unique offering of handmade brooms, pots, pottery, clothing and more (mushroom leather!). It's good to know that San Francisco still offers artists a place to live and work successfully.
Locally made bags and beer rounded out the tour. I feel so fortunate to have been part of the beta tour of this thriving and growing neighborhood. We now have a good reason to love our beautiful town even more.
Bay Area Green Tours did an amazing job of curating a tour of intelligent sustainable and artful events and places in Dog Patch. It takes a lot of passion to bring together such an impressive afternoon of fun.

Let me start by saying that I have been blessed to participate in several of Bay Area Green Tour events. Marissa LaMagna, the owner, and her staff are creative and passionate about the environment and social justice. They put together unique experiences that you are not going to get through one of the more traditional city tour companies. I would highly recommend BAGT!!!
Our small-group walking tour through Dogpatch was truly an authentic, local experience. We started at the historic Noonan Building at the art studio of Suzy Barnard. She shared with us the history of the studios, her artistic inspiration of the Bay, its cargo ships, and the ever-changing palette of colors, and explained her painting techniques that turn into beautiful works of art.
Next we met the energetic Kimberly Austin and saw how her fascinating antique presses work, smelled her hand made candles, and learned about the myriad of products that she designs. Her studio was a sensory experience! Looking, touching, smelling, and listening.
We ambled through Dogpatch seeing the many eclectic new businesses that have joined the neighborhood. From gourmet chocolate entrepreneurs, a specialty cheese shop, and places to make your own wine or sample craft beers, you will never leave Dogpatch hungry!
Arriving at Workshop Residence, we met Lisa Ellsworth, the Creative Manager. She shared their philosophy of working with local artists and designers to help them produce functional art pieces while earning real, living wages. One of the most unusual products made by one artist in residence are chairs, bowls, and planters made from mushrooms!! After enjoying a look at the shop, we headed to the actual workshop to create our own functional art piece! Banging and hammering away, with Lisa's instructions, we all left with sparkly luminaries, just in time for the holidays.
Our next stop took us across the street to Rickshaw Bag Works. Mark Dwight, the founder, greeted us and led us through his creative warehouse, a hive of activity. We were able to see all of the latest designs and how the actual bags are put together. The best part is Mark's mission, "local made." He strives to buy materials made in the USA whenever possible and to do all bag assembly right here, in San Francisco. This keeps jobs here, rather than offshore.
To finish off our day, we went to Magnolia Brewery to sample house-smoked BBQ, collards, and the local IPA brews. It was a wonderful, meaningful day.

As a Chinese student from a huge extended family, capitalized food system would never satisfy my demand. I know too well how human the food can be. When I ask my mom how can I cook well in America, she just answered "use your heart". This is a trip about knowing how people use their heart to prepare food in America. We started from an Indian canteen. The tour guide welcame me with a bag of indian food. And walked us through the store. Then we went to a jam company, June Taylor. It was nice to see a lady like my grandma, who is an artisan of food. The pickle factory was not so impressive just because my family is so good at it. But I do like the trip to the sake factory. I am a super fan of wine and alcohol. The sake factory is really an inspiring place. With 5 dollars, I tasted 6 kinds of sake and got helpful introduction from staff there. I bought a set of bottle and cups, also two kinds of sake from there as gift for my friend. It was really enjoyable. We ended our tour with a cup of ice cream. I am pretty sure I would visit these place again if I got another chance to visit Berkeley. Since my dissertation is about food system, diving into the food producers world makes me feel my research object touchable.
I feel gratitude and lucky to have this tour. Hope more people can get this experience with two very nice tour guides in the future. We should be conscious about our food system and eat and drink responsibly.

Hi Juno,
We loved having you along on our Taste of West Berkeley Tour with your cousins. Thank you for your thoughtful review, we hope you enjoy the rest of your travels here in the States!
ps. "turmeric" was one of the spices you were interested in looking up. ;)
