Great Experience with Single-Vineyard Wines
jan. 2020

We started in the charming farmhouse and then Joe whisked us off to see the well thought out barns and explain the different soils that create the individuality in their single crop wines. This is their signature effort, to use only one single vineyard for each variety. All four of us had different tastes and preferences which added to the fun of our experience. Joe went out of his way to find the answers to our obscure questions (what wood is the barn made from?).

We went to Nickel & Nickel for a tour and tasting. Our host, Shane, was awesome! He was knowledgeable, funny, and made the experience fantastic. Of course it also helped that all of the wines we tasted were incredible. They have some really amazing history and architecture on this property. If you're looking for a tasting that will set the bar high, book this one!

When you arrive, there is a call button outside to open the gate. Then we walked up to the white traditional house ( refitted for visitors ). We were greeted with a Chardonnay while we way for our host, Aaron. We then tried 4 Cabernet Sauvignons. All were excellent. We had some cheese and a cracker to go with it. We try en asked about a few more specific wines and tasted those. You can purchase and take with you or they ship for $20. If you buy enough wine the tasting fee is waived. It was a beautiful day and experience.

Don’t bother with this place. We had a reservation. We were a little early, they had us wait around while they took a walk-in and wanted us to wait while they helped the walk-in. There are so many other wineries, do yourself a favor and visit wineries that value ALL customers

My husband and I have been there before but this time our friends wanted to have a private tasting, and wow it was amazing. Beyond expectations. I love that we had our own dining room to taste, we’re able to taste anything we desired, and we’re able to have a cherished one-on-one experience. Shane Price was our host and he was extremely helpful, kind, friendly, and made the experience for us. He even gave me a wooden crate box with the gorgeous Nickel & Nickel logo on it, which now has a place of honor in my home. I was so touched he would do that for me. Visiting this winery was a highlight of my trip, and for all of us. The gorgeous grounds need to be explored almost as much as the wine needs to be tasted. This is a must see stop, but make reservations and request Shane. Then you will have a perfect time.

Our experience at this winery was above and beyond others in the area. Our host Andrea provided more history of the wines, the property, the philosophy of the winery and taught us more about tasting than all other wineries combined.

Upon first arriving here, our AMAZING wine educator, Savannah met us as we walked up with two glasses of amazing Far Niente Chardonnay and thanked us for being there! What a PERFECT way to start an incredible tasting visit!!

Their grounds are stunning… buildings are amazing… landscaping was picture-perfect and customer service was outstanding! We enjoyed learning about their single-vineyard verticals and the terroir that affects nose and palate of each, even though they are all cabernet sauvignon and the same vintage. Loved this learning experience!

Loved being able to walk around, taking in the scenery while snapping pics… they have beautiful horses to check out while there as well.

We’re so very happy we became members here (many months ago, before ever visiting) and we were able to visit, it helped solidify our decision to maintain our membership! We’ll be back!!

The Cabernets at Nickel and Nickel are so good, with way too many to try. Each one has its own personality, due to the different souls where the grapes are grown.
This is not a cheap ticket, but if you looking for a truly great Cabernet experience, you will not be disappointed here. Of course, they do have other varietals to try.
Savannah, our wine host, was both gracious and professional.
As this property has corralled horses, hopefully you will visit them. Both are wonderful animals.
Again, if you are looking for a nice experience in Oakville. You will want to make a reservation here.
All Covid protocols are being followed here.

For years I have wanted to visit and finally did on a recent trip. While the tasting fee is steep you get great service and accompanied with selection of cheeses. We were indulged with additional tastings making the decision to join as a member easy. The membership provides access to Far Niente - another must visit and 3 other wineries that currently do not have tasting rooms. And when you join your tasting fee is complimentary. My only regret is we didn’t visit sooner.

My wife and I became members at Nickel & Nickel’s sister winery, Far Niente, on a previous trip to Napa, and our membership shipments include some wines from Nickel & Nickel, but we really haven’t been familiar with Nickel & Nickel itself. On a recent trip to Napa, we made sure to stop at Nickel & Nickel for the first time, both to learn more, and because we were able to take advantage of complimentary tastings as part of our Far Niente membership. We ended up having a really excellent experience, which left us eager to try more of their wines and return in the future.

We booked the private single vineyard classic tasting, and when we pulled up to the winery, I was initially a little unsure of how it would be. Unlike most wineries in the area, the entrance is gated, and you have to hit the intercom and talk to someone to be buzzed in. It’s also a little odd that when you hit the intercom, it doesn’t go directly through to someone inside, but instead calls the winery’s general phone number. It was just weird to get a rather cold “thank you for calling Nickel & Nickel, how can I help you?”, when we’re right out front trying to park for a tasting. The gates make the winery seem standoffish and seem unnecessary. It was especially odd because this first impression was so opposite from how we felt about the rest of our experience.

Once we had parked, we were able to take in how unique and lovely this winery really is. It feels like you’re stepping right into a beautiful farm out of the past, with horses grazing in front, and a lovely white Queen Anne-style house as the main building in which to start the experience. When we walked in, it felt rather formal, but we were welcomed in and told we could wait in the living room of the house while they let our host know we had arrived. The living room was lovely, with old wood floors, traditional furniture, and a fire going on the chilly January day when we visited. I didn’t really mind the formality since it was so nice, but I still wasn’t quite sure if the whole experience would feel stiff (it ultimately didn’t).

A minute or two later, our host Andrea greeted us, and everything proceeded perfectly from there. Andrea was warm, friendly, and personable, and put us at ease immediately. We really enjoyed the time we spent with her, and she seemed to have a passion for Nickel & Nickel and what they do. We explained to her from the outset that we’re members through Far Niente, and are totally deficient in our knowledge of Nickel & Nickel. I really appreciated that from that point onward, she made a point of really providing a lot of great education about the winery and its mission.

Far Niente and Nickel & Nickel look and feel so different for being two nearby wineries from the same owners, but Andrea helped us understand why. While Far Niente is more focused on producing excellent wine mostly from its estate vineyards, Nickel & Nickel was the owners’ chance to really experiment with soil and climate and make wines in a more scientific way, by focusing on producing single-vineyard wines from various parts of the Napa Valley. The same type of wine from different vineyards within Napa can produce dramatically different taste profiles, which Nickel & Nickel wants to showcase. We really appreciated this background, and it was really nice that Andrea basically gave us a full tour of the premises, even though we had just signed up for a tasting and she could easily have just taken us straight to our tasting. The tour took us through the barns where the wine is stored, and the most interesting part was seeing the display of soils from their various vineyards throughout the Napa Valley. It’s fascinating because the soils differ so much from one another for being in the same general region and only miles apart.

After finishing the tour (during which we tried some Nickel & Nickel chardonnay), we moved into the beautiful historic 1700s red barn for our tasting. The barn was taken apart and shipped from the East Coast to take its place at Nickel & Nickel, and it’s now used for tastings, as well as to house certain winery offices and their wine lab. A private table was ready for us overlooking the lab, with a nice cheese plate and four cabernet sauvignons to sample, showcasing the breadth of their portfolio from different areas in the Napa Valley. We were also offered a bonus pour of one of their merlots, which was great to taste as well.

The tasting itself was so nice. We just had a great time sitting with Andrea and talking about the wine and all kinds of other things. We also thought she did a great job of timing things perfectly so that she spent almost all of the time with us, but gave us a little space at the end to finish up the tasting on our own. It was a casual and enlightening experience that resulted in us walking away with a much greater knowledge of what Nickel & Nickel does, and a greater knowledge of which AVAs produce wines with our most preferred taste. This will make it easier to determine which Nickel & Nickel bottles to purchase in the future, since they produced a lot of options each year. Unlike most wineries, where production is much more geographically limited, a visit to Nickel & Nickel is a good exploratory journey into a larger selection of cabernets to pin down more specifically where within Napa produces the best wine for you.

I definitely recommend a visit to Nickel & Nickel when in Napa. Although we’re members through Far Niente, and thought Nickel & Nickel might feel like a lesser sibling in comparison, Nickel & Nickel holds its own and offers excellent wines in its own right. The setting at Nickel & Nickel is completely different from Far Niente, so it’s been fun to experience both. Nickel & Nickel simultaneously has the feeling of a really comfortable midwestern family farmstead (which is very unlike most Napa wineries), while also having added sophistication from the historic home where the experience started and ended. Our private experience tasting with Andrea was great and we’ll definitely make sure to come back in the future.
