While I group the State and National Parks together as one amazing place, them each having their own place on Tripadvisor allows me to think about each are on its own.
I reviewed Jedediah Smith and mentioned the haunting smoke that blanketed the area that we were able to see. Prairie Creek had Fern Canyon, which was amazing for a number of reasons and Drury Scenic Pkwy, which is one of the most amazing drives we have done.
This unit is central to the complete park and you will probably spend a bit of time in it. Make sure you stop somewhere ad get into the woods and just feel the atmosphere and listen to the woods. It's amazing.

So glad I made it here during my lifetime. My neck was sore with so much looking up at all the magnificent trees. We did the Prairie Creek to Foothilss Trail loop past the big tree. Really stunning trail and about the right distance for us … 2.5 miles. Nice gurgling creek along much of the walk. Every bend we went around we were astonished. Also did the Trillium Falls trail. Really really pretty!

The majority of the reviews here are 5s and rightfully so. Of the major redwood (and maybe even the sequoia) parks this is best of the group and deserves every accolade. It is the only big tree park where you can spend your entire day walking among redwood giants; indeed if you wanted to you could create a 15+ mile walk that is all old-growth with minimal difficulty. The density of redwoods is superior to the national park (which is also gorgeous) and there is the added bonus of Fern Canyon and the resident Roosevelt elk herd. There are areas in other parks that are as scenic but you cannot string together a long distance walk like you can at Prairie Creek. The only knock is that the parking situation can get a little hard on crowded days if you plan to start your walk at the visitor center, as there are limited long-term spaces. However, there are plenty of turnouts on the Drury Road and an additional parking lot at Big Tree Wayside, which accommodate overflow.
The creekside trail (originally named Prairie Creek, now Karl Knapp) and the Foothill trails are designed for ADA, so you can do a very nice two mile easy loop on a wide well-graded walkway. It is appropriate for all ages. Leaving the valley will require climbs of 500-1000 feet into the upland forest. Even on crowded days, the short out-and-back trails at the northern end of the parkway, such as the Moorman Trail, will be relatively uncrowded and have plenty of trees.
Revel in the majesty of the redwoods. Find your favorite tree. Watch a banana slug move very slowly.
This review excludes any commentary about staying at the campground, as we did not stay overnight. Yes, Fern Canyon is where the villain in Jurassic Park/Lost World meets his demise. Much of the movie was filmed on the North Coast.

This is one of the many areas that you can enjoy the Redwoods. It is located just off the Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway (which is off route 101). Park in the road and then wander up to the visitor centre where they will show you some great trails...we did a couple of short ones and only passed a few other people. The scenery is just amazing, so well worth a visit!

This was not my first visit here, but I was still so impressed. The towering, majestic redwoods make anyone feel dwarfed and inspired. Take a walk amongst the giants so you can really get the full effect.

A fantastic park that we visit at least once a year. Was a little disappointed that we were not allowed to just drive through the campground without paying $8.00. We always do the drive through and it is free. We have stayed in the campground since I was a kid and then we brought our children to the campground, but were not able to camp this time, and just wanted to see our favorite camp sites.

This is a CA state park but is jointly operated by the state & national park services. It is accessed from the Newton Drury parkway - just off the 101. There are so many different places to see in the park which is why you see differences in the reviews - although most all are very positive,
The park is free except for camping and accessing Gold Bluffs Beach area (includes Fern Canyon). The benefit of the jointly operated park allows for America the Beautiful passes to be used for this fee (currently $12). Additionally, for this area a permit system was setup for travel between mid May and mid September (no need for permit if you have Gold Bluffs Beach camping reservation). The beach area is quiet & peaceful and Fern Canyon is very magical. Be sure to look at road conditions to get to these areas as streams cross the road at times and depending on your vehicle will be impassable.
In addition to the area discussed above, there are miles of hiking trails, waterfalls, a prairie where you can see may elk, old growth forests and so much fauna & flora. Note that dogs are not allowed on trails (other than service dogs). Won't go over everything we saw (it is all about the journeyj - right?), but one of the coolest for us in our myco learning was seeing some ghost pipes fungi. Like I said magical!

We came here for Fern Canyon! It was a bit out of the way and terrain was iffy for our little car but we made it. Scenes of Jurassic park were filmed in this canyon and you can feel it with the grandeur of the walls. It is quiet and serene and while you dodge puddles and walk on wood slats at points, it is easy and tranquil. I enjoyed the atmosphere here and the ferns were beautiful!

This park is very beatiful with lots of nature all around you. The Elk sometimes come into the campground and are within 6 feet, once in a lifetime experience. 10/10 would recommend!

This is one of several state/national parks with redwood trees. The beautiful Newton B. Drury Parkway is the highlight of this park, in my opinion. Absolutely worth a visit!

Hi, I'm trying to plan a trip to the Redwood forests with my mom, two of my brothers, and my two children. Visiting the Redwoods is a bucket list goal of my mom's, and we're going for her 71st birthday on August 7.
1. What is the nearest international airport?
2. We will stay in the region for 2-3 days. Should we try to visit all of the Redwood State and National parks, or where do you recommend we visit for the best experience (considering we will be with an elder and a child as young as 8 y/o)?
3. We are not going to camp, so we need some affordable lodging for a few days. Where do you recommend we stay that is clean, comfortable and offers great customer service?
Please advise. Marcus @ marcusharcus . com
Thx!

I am not sure about the international airports in the area. That region is pretty remote so I am guessing San Francisco like previous posters suggested. Trinidad is a good place to stay because of its proximity to the parks. Adorable town with a good beach as well. I am not sure what availability is like with such short notice, but there are a handful of places to stay. Emerald Forest cabins may fit in your budget. Personally I would avoid Eureka. There is a huge transient population that we saw while driving through in April. My family and I did not feel comfortable in that city and it is about an hour and a half south of Prairie Creek. Depending on the fitness level of your mom there are two hikes that are quite lovely. The first is Lady Bird Johnson Grove which is pretty short without a lot of elevation change. This one is in Prairie Creek. The other is the hike to the Boy Scout Tree which is in the northern part of the park near Crescent City. This one has a little more elevation gain and is around five miles if you hike to the falls. But both offer fantastic views of the redwoods. Hop off the highway at Prairie Creek and drive through the park to really see the trees. They just take your breath away! If you can get into Fern Canyon I would recommend it. Before visiting that part of the park go to the park visitor center to get an update on the road and trail conditions. When we were there in April the road wasn't open. Also being cash because I believe you will have to pay to get into that part of the park and the ranger booth is remote so I don't think they take debit (I could be wrong). Prairie Creek is also home to a herd of Thule Elk so keep your eyes open for them. Trees of Mystery is fun if you like kitsch (I love it). If you are driving north from San Francisco pay a visit to Ferndale. It is a quaint Victorian town that is a historic landmark that has been featured in movies. Personally I would focus on the southern end of the park since you have limited time and may be driving a long distance to get there. There is plenty to for you and your family to enjoy without feeling as if you have been cheated out of the redwood experience. One more tip is weather. It may be California, but the northern coast is not usually the "sunny California" depicted on TV and movies, especially in summer. It is often foggy, cool to cold, and overcast. Layers are a good idea in addition to a water resistant jacket. Have a great trip!

It looks like I can only make reservations after May 15. Is the park open for camping before that? Is it first come basis?
Skrevet 28. februar 2019
I have never camped there because I live here. I don't believe the campground is open now but the park is. You can always camp at Clam Beach, open year round, on a first come basis. It is about 30 minutes South of the campground at Prairie Creek.

Hi! We are from PA and love our local park and recs, but alas it's time to see something different. What airport would be the closest/cheapest to fly into for this park? Not afraid to rent a car and drive about 2 hours. thanks!!

I was just there today, if you need to ask anything else I'll be glad to help.

I read online that there’s a limited number of daily permits for the prairie creek trail? Is this accurate?
Skrevet 3. januar 2019
I think you have gotten good advice. There are no limitations that I am aware of for the trails in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. At some times for maintenance and controlled burns, various trails will be closed. Check with a ranger at the Prairie Creek Visitor Center. There is one trail that is always restricted and that is the Tall Trees Access Road to the Tall Trees Trail. Each day they limit the number of vehicles entering that area, and it is controlled by the Rangers. A stop at the park entrance and the Kuchel Visitor Center can provide details and access info.

I worked at the Park as a volunteer and cleaned the cabins, so I can definitely tell you about them. First, realize that they are cabins with heat, electricity, and platforms to put your bedding. But nothing more. You need to walk to the restrooms/showers (2 minutes) which are not in your cabin. No kitchen. You need to bring a mattress and/or bedding as well as fold-up chairs, if you want a place to sit. The advantage is that you are right in the park and may look out in the morning to see the elk grazing in the meadow. Ask more if I haven't answered what you want to know.

How close can you park to Fern canyon? Does the walk to the canyon take awhile? I am limited on time int he area and trying to decide the best use of our time.
Skrevet 16. april 2016
You can park pretty close to the start of the trail. The drive in though is around 8 miles of fairly narrow gravel road. There was running water to cross in two spots. It wasn't deep and the bottom is all rocks, did it in a regular car. The trail loop is closed where a small landslide took out some stairs. I'd actually recommend you take some of the scenic drives instead and hike around anywhere you see a pretty spot - Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway is beautiful with redwoods on a winding road. We did it on April 12, 2016 and had it mostly to ourselves.

Because of the drought we were thinking fern canyon might be sort of dead (literally). I wanted to see it when it was lush and green again. Does anyone have a recent report---I understand northern California has been getting lots of rain. Thank you!
Skrevet 22. februar 2016
Fern Creek gets most of its moisture from fog, thus it is lush and beautiful. Was there in late September and it was amazing.
Skrevet 25. februar 2016
Are there light snacks or sandwiches available for sale at the visitor center? Thanks!
Skrevet 5. august 2015
Sorry, no. The visitor center has books, postcards and a few trinkets, but no food.
Skrevet 15. januar 2017
This sounds beautiful. Do you remember the campsite number of the spot you were in? booking online right now. thanks
Skrevet 4. juli 2015
While it's true that the campsites are small, I really want them to keep it that way. It leaves more room for hiking, redwoods and wildflowers. I'd hate to see them pave over huge areas of this beautiful forest.
Skrevet 15. januar 2017
Dogs are allowed in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. BUT you cannot take the dog on any of the trails. You can have the dog on a 6 foot leash to walk around the parking area and the campground. You CAN take dogs on leash walking on Cal Barrel Road, which is 3 miles long and quite scenic, within a mile of the Visitors' Center.
