Cannot say enough good things about this place. Felt like Colorado--only 100 miles from San Diego.
We hiked from the Ranger Station and couldn't believe how awesome this place was.
On a short trip with family, we went here on our first day. Second day we went to Joshua Tree, which was very cool. But, on the ride back to Palm Desert, we started to talk about our Day 3 plans and the consensus was: Let's go back to the tram and hike all day...this time let's take sandwiches.
Even if you don't leave the lodge up top, the views and ambience can't be beat.
If you get there early you can park in Lot A right at the base of the tram.

We did a morning/day trip to San Jacinto Mountain. We accessed via the Aerial Tram. It is a very different environment than down on the desert floor in Palm Springs. The air was crisp and cool. There are many different hikes based on health condition and abilities. We saw Scout troops heading out for an overnight camping trip. We saw some novice hikers just going out for a few hours.
We ended up going on the "Desert View" trail. It's about 1 3/4 miles and is intermediate in difficulty. There are a few areas where you have to do a moderate uphill hike, but for the most part, it's a relatively easy trail. The views are spectacular. Stop at the "Notch" posts where you can hike off the trail to enjoy some excellent views.
The mountain top has a cafe, restaurant, and cocktail bar. The cafe is open as soon at people start arriving at the top of the mountain. The restaurant and cocktail bar open around 11am.
This is a great activity and you can do it in a half day (2-3 hours) or spend an entire day up top hiking around and exploring. We got there at 8am on a Saturday morning and were riding the tram to the top by 8:24AM. We were riding the tram down by 11:45 AM and managed to hike around for about 3.5 miles and take in a lot of the views.

Not to be missed. First of all because we climb with the cable car and it is incredible to minter 2000 m in 10 min. And the park is so pretty! It’s fresh green! Plan to make the two small loops for the views, knowing that the most beautiful panorama is behind the restaurant. But if you like walking: go to the ranger station, register and ask for the hike that loops in 2/3h (3h max with lots of photo stops), it is quite easy (provide adequate shoes and sweater, no flip-flops or heels like tourists who climb) and allows to loop in the forest. This place is unimaginable in Palm springs!

Unbeatable experience on the San Jacinto tram and mountain… It is the second steepest tram in the world and only one of two in the world that are as big as they are and rotate 360° you do not have to be a nature enthusiast or athletic to do this you just ride the tram up and you can spend the day at the Tram housewatching exhibits and look it out over Palm Springs and the beautiful mount

San Jacinto Mountain looms over Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley. One of the Southern California Saints along with San Antonio in the San Gabriels and San Gorgonio in the San Bernadinos, the mountain reaches 10,800 feet which is not that high even for the state of California; however, its prominences, which measures how high the mountain feels, is one of the top 30 most prominent mountains in North American. This is why the Coachella Valley feels so impressive snugged under the snow-capped mountain. Between the Mojave Desert of Joshua Tree NP and the Colorado Desert of the Coachella Valley, you simply dont expect to see snowed capped mountains, especially in late March but San Jacinto is one.
We had the chance to see if from Joshua Tree National Park and from the Indian Canyons of Palm Springs as well as simply driving in the Coachella Valley and it is impressive from anywhere you see. You can take the tram to about 8,500 feet and hike the remainer to the top. However, in March when we visited to as late as May, that hike will be in snow. The mountain is an impressive attraction to any Palm Springs visit.

We took the tram up so we could save some energy for the other hikes offered. So many wonderful views and vistas. We capped it with a drink at the bar.

The tram ride up the mountain is Incredible! Breath taking views spanning as far as the eye can see. However if you fear heights at all you will be tested.

Stunning hike that offers a break from the heat. The tramway ride is 15 minutes long and breathtaking. The hike at the top is easy, accessible to most, and still challenging enough to be fun. Note: closed toed shoes are a must. Also, the trail is not well marked, so know where you are going because cell signal is limited.

Skrevet 19. januar 2019
Hello, late reply oops.
The tram has been closed due to road damage from Feb 14, 2019.
Hwy 247 is also closed for another 2 months.
There is a ton of snow on the mountain.

Hi! Has anyone visited in Dec 2018, is there snow? We are visiting Palm Springs and learned that they get snow up here. Thanks!
Skrevet 11. desember 2018
Hello, we visited today December 19th and there was definitely plenty of snow on top. It was a warm 26 degrees (Celsius) at the bottom of the mountain and a cooler 11 degrees up top - although we found that walking around up there we soon warmed up. Make sure you wear shoes with a good grip though as lots of the trails are snow covered and can get slippery.

We are travelling to Palm Springs in September and the tram will be closed for its annual maintenance. We would like to do the hike. Is there another alternative to get to the summit besides the tram? Thanks for your answers.
Skrevet 28. juni 2018
Yes, of course it is..
First one is the trail "Cactus to clouds" - starts right form Palm Springs Museum of art parking lot. This trail is long and steep, 16 miles one way to summit, first ~8 miles are the steepest, till you reach the ranger station after that is much easier.. Hiking on this trail usually starts at night time due to very hot conditions during the day - no shade till you get to ranger station.
If you check on Google this trail, you will find a lot of usefull and detailed info.
There is another hiking trail to summit from Mt Sant Jacinto State park, it is about one hour drive from Palm Springs to get to that trail, park locate on the opposite site of the mountain from Palm Springs, this trail is not so long and not so steep compare to "Cactus to clouds" trail.

The ride is about 20 minutes with 360 degrees of spectacular views.

Hi. My friends and I, want to go in June 25 but I have a questions ¿I need reservation? to that office of phone or simply i come and me register for get permission or ticket and which is the price?
Skrevet 9. mai 2017
No reservation is necessary, but the line for the tram will get longer later in the day--I recommend going early/mid-morning (when the tram starts running). You pay a small entrance fee, park your car, and tram to the top. From there you can walk around the state park (some amazing views!). We went in the winter, but spent several hours just wandering around. Wear good shoes and be sure to check the weather at the TOP of the mountain--it can be much cooler than it is at the bottom (maybe a jacket in a backpack is a good idea). Absolutely worth the effort to get to the top--have a wonderful time!

Yes you can. As long as you carry them or a special needs dog
