I've driven (and ridden by motorcycle) the Pearblossom Highway more times than I can count since the early '80s, and it's interesting to see how much (or little) it's changed in those almost 40 years. It brings back a lot of memories.
For example, in the fall of '83 I had make the five-ish (?) hour drive back and forth between Riverside and Merced every week for school. Come home on Friday evening, go back on Sunday evening. To break up the monotony, going one way I'd stay south of the mountains on the Foothill freeway and the Grapevine, and going the other way I'd take the Pearblossom, usually on my Sunday evening trip. The Pearblossom was almost all two lane back then, and on Sunday night I pretty much had the road to myself. Just me and the coyotes.
It's wider in spots now than it was back then, but in other places it doesn't look much different than it did 37 years ago. One thing I liked about the Pearblossom back then was being able to look out across the desert at the lights of the cites and towns twinkling in the distance, or looking the other way at the mountains silhouetted by the glow of the LA basin beyond them, and that's still true.
I'm not sure what these people are talking about with the road supposedly being "dangerous" and dark at night (huh?). It's no more dangerous or dark at night than any desert or rural road, and it's a heck of a lot wider in spots and less rural than when I started driving it.

This is a very nice little highway. It goes through a number of little (and not so little) towns. The scenery is very cool, with Joshua trees, saguaros, and lots of animals crossing the road. It is a nice drive

When we started driving at the Route 138 - Pearblossom Highway, we enjoyed the views. Wow!
There were many mountains to enjoy!
The mountains changes at times. One was really big.
There were also mountains with snow.
This is a must see!

Shortcut between Magic Mountain and Victorville! Each time I drive it, it becomes less backwoods and rustic. Perhaps it’s because Victorville continues to encroach into the Mojave desert. Still a fast way across the desert, unless you are stuck behind travel trailers and RV’s.

Many improvements to this corridor have made travel much easier and safer. This is the route from Palmdale to Victorville, the Devils Punchbowl, Littlerock dam, Mormon Rocks and many cute stores in the cities of pearblossom and Littlerock. Remember it’s 55mph when you drive!!!

Travelling from Palm Desert north to SAN Francisco, Pearblossom Highway avoids the grind through LA traffic. Not much scenery - just the scrub Mojave desert. Interesting places off the Highway, including a failed commune and the real estate scam of Lake Los Angeles. Not many services until one gets to Palmdale. A fairly fast road, with sections of single file.

Mountain views are nice. Weather is nice most of the time. The road is currently under construction. Would not recommend traveling the 138 if you can avoid it for the next several months

Where are the street lights once you get out of central palmdale?
Was really gnarly when it goes to one lane and there are no lights to provide much needed safety. My wife was gripping my arm the entire drive. Luckily we did not have to travel during snow or rain. Would be an absolute nightmare and accident zone!

The signage on 138 heading east near Wrightwood (coming from Palmdale) is lacking and misleading. A sign on 138 heading east says 5 miles to Wrightwood. Then there is no sign until Hwy 2 and it just says Hwy 2 (at the highway), which is where u have to turn to get to Wrightwood in 5 miles (20 min. delay for me). There is a needed warning sign that says Hwy 2 is imminent (say 100 yards) and a missing turn right for Wrightwood sign! There are signs coming the other way - from San Bernardino.
Also there was construction (inactive on Sunday) and mis-timed lights in Palmdale that caused very excessive delays with east/wwest 138 traffic - waiting 5 minutes for no one except for the light to change at 47th street east and 37th street east - shame on CA gov!

Is it really faster than staying on hiway 5 to the 210 to get to Redlands?
Skrevet 14. februar 2020
The distance from Palm Desert to Palmdale is approx 140 miles. That's about a two hour and 20 minute trip.

Pearblossum is not a quick route. I took it because I wanted to avoid the heavy traffic as you get closer to LA. It is a nice quieter alternative and you will probably save some time. Many parts are 50 MPH so keep that in mind.

Is this route a faster way to get to Orange County than the 14 freeway
Skrevet 27. desember 2016
YES! Poor traffic flow aside for the 14fwy, taking the 405 or I-5 exposes you to traffic jams and delays that can get you believing they were planned just to mess with your head. Both freeway's traffic issues misteriously dissappear at the OC/LAC lines. Traveling 138 while raining or snowing seriously increases the possibility of having problems, and shouln't be considered. Driving 138 at night even without the rain/snow issues also requires heightened attention to your driving skills. Recognizing colors is deminished at night, blindness from oncoming vehicle headlights is a problem due to the rolling surface of the highway and sometimes ground fog to name three. Traveling 138 in daylight with clear sky's and dry pavement will get you to OC much faster than the 14 fwy.

have a 40 ft motorhome and towing a car behind. is this a safe road to travel on Thursdays during the day

Is Pearvlissom Highway still closed? The Caltrans website said its opening in the Summer 2016.
Skrevet 29. juni 2016
The 138 is NOT closed...was just on it 2 days ago. The 18 is still closed but the 138 is for sure open. Lots of construction areas but it's the usual heavy semi traffic that will slow you down.
