This is a "skip it" for your family vacation. It's about a 2-hour drive from San Diego up a very winding mountain road....and the views from the road are the highlight! Once you get to the observatory, there's not much to see. The observatory itself is rather small and boring. There is a museum and gift shop, but again, small and boring. There is a picnic area that is well shaded, but there are no fabulous views that we could see from the top! Unless you're able to go at night for a special viewing event, there is no point in driving all that way.

We decided to add this to our itinerary on our San Diego trip as my sons are both into Astrophysics. It is an almost two hour drive from San Diego, but the views from the road up the mountain are spectacular! The Observatory visitor center is very informative and there is a small gift shop. It is a short walk from the visitor center to the actual observatory, but be aware that there are stairs to get up to the door and then again up to view the telescope. There are not too many, but it is not wheelchair accessible. As we went in November, we were the only people visiting at that time and there is no one in the observatory to answer any questions that you have, but the information on the walls is quite informative. We all felt it was worth the trip, but be aware that it closes at 3:30 pm so plan accordingly. I can see why it closes that early as I'm sure they don't want visitors on the winding road (without guardrails) when the sun goes down.

Loved the on the floor tour. First visited in 1979, second time ten years later...ish. Could only do the self guided tour/visitors gallery. July 15, 2023 took the $5.00 tour on the floor guided tour. A little stuffy.....no talking/whispering. Thank goodness as an amateur astrononer i took pictures of everything by walking around. I came to see the telescope/engineering marvel!!! Lighten up on the no talking/no whispering. I came to see the telescope, not hear the history of the telescope. Thanks for letting me wander, a little bit. Think about putting the 48 ibch schmidt on the tour. Ps....order some 3x, 3x tall, 4x shirts hoods etc. Thx...
Cant wait to take the tour again!

We went for Father's Day and my husband and three sons loved it. The drive up there is beautiful and everything you learn there is fascinating. They have guided tours as well as self-guided tours. Both very well done. We enjoyed our visit. You might want to bring a snack, depending upon where you are starting. It is quite a drive to get up there, and then if you really get caught up in learning everything you can up there, it can take a while. I recommend a visit.

Have not been to the Palomar Observatory since I was a kid about 60 years ago. The grounds and the scenery are fantastic but the dome itself is not handicapped accessible. The visitor center is worth a visit and there is a ramp there but it is 150 yards or so to the observatory and there are no signs saying there is no access for wheelchairs or scooters. There were ramps up to it but once there it was all stairs. Very disappointed. Fortunately a friend climbed the stairs and brought down pictures so I could see the telescope. I suppose the observatory is so old that it is grandfathered into not being required to provide an elevator or ramps into the facility. I also realize that the purpose of the facility is not to entertain tourist perse but a sign at the parking lot or visitor center warning about the lack of access would have been nice. Don't know if there website mentioned it.

January 2020, in Palm Springs for a wedding, chose to make a week vacation with three days on the coast in Carlsbad and Oceanside. Drove hwy 74 up and over and told my wife we had to go up Palomar to see the observatory/scope. Fantastic history, informative visitor center, and a good viewing room of the scope and mount within the observatory. Had we visited on a summer weekend we would have taken the tour. Have now seen what have been the largest radio scope (Arecibo), largest reflector (Hale/Palomar) and yet to see the largest refractor (Yerkes). My wife will be excited when I fill her in on the next travel details.

A great place to visit. We went on a Monday, very few visitors. You can get up close to the telescope but only thru glass. The history is laid out very well at the museum. The gift shop is small but adequate. A great place to spend an afternoon. Be forewarned, the road leading up to the conservatory is very curvy, close to the edge at 5,500 ft. Not for the squamish.

It impressive! The history was fascinating and I didn't even do the tour. I have lived in San Diego for 14 years and never went to the observatory. In fact, it's only been in recent years I knew it existed. I love Palomar Mountain and will definitely be back for one of their night events.

There are so many things that make the trip up to the Palomar Observatory a blast. First, the destination is a very important part of astronomy history and a breathtaking relic of a time when we actively sought to scientifically push boundaries. Second, the road is a blast--Miata clubs have been using the road for meets for decades now. Third, it is one example of how you can go from the sand at the beaches in Oceanside to snow in the span of less than 90 minutes--even late into the Spring. There's a little something for everyone on this adventure.
