An opulent, historic mansion on Millionaire’s Row, the hoverboard from Back to the Future II, and the first Finnish consulate in SoCal - these are just some of the things we saw at the Pasadena Museum of History!
It was really fun playing tourist so close to home - a true hidden gem, I never knew this museum was here even having lived here all these years lol! We did the Fényes Mansion tour which includes admission to the main museum and is the best way to experience the museum imo.
The main museum is currently running an exhibit featuring films made around Pasadena and it was so fun to explore and see things like the BTTF hoverboard and Eddie Murphy’s outfit in Beverly Hills Cop, and so many more interesting items and info tidbits.
But it’s small so it’s best to pair it with the mansion tour - which is a fascinating glimpse into the area’s past and the prominent family that owned the mansion. It even holds the original office of the first Finnish consul, Y.A. Paloheimo, still intact as it was all those years ago, complete with the consul emblem and his photo with Eleanor Roosevelt.
The mansion is one of two remaining fully intact mansions on what used to be “Millionaire’s Row” - the other is the Gamble House which is a craftsman - but Fényes Mansion is over the top grandeur! There used to be 52 mansions and these are all that’s left :-o
And here’s a fun little fact we learned - did you know Tiffany & Co made elaborately carved wooden chairs?? You can see them in the dining room of the mansion and they’re absolutely beautiful!
We learned SO many interesting bits of history about Pasadena and the surrounding area - I won’t share it all here - you gotta take the tour - it’s totally worth it!
But I will leave you with one other fun fact I learned that answered a burning question I had every time I would drive the 210 - this is for the locals - do you know how Michillinda Ave got its name? It came from some of the earlier settlers of the area in the 1870s: Michigan + Illinois + Indiana = Michillinda!!
The tour is a great experience for local history and I highly recommend it - they’re infrequent so if you can get in on a tour, DO IT!!
They’re around $20 and you can get them in advance via Eventbrite which I recommend bc they sell out (especially on weekends). You can also buy them onsite but the tours are likely to be full. The museum admission is included and they have bathrooms and a small private parking lot available.
Shout out to our awesome tour guides Andrea & Paul - tysm for a great afternoon!!

A superb white house in a pleasant garden, which presents the life of a rich family from another era.
Interesting.

The picture is very deceiving because that is not the museum but an old mansion that is not open to the public most days. The actual so called museum, is just one room with some memorabilia that you can see in 30 minutes and it’s not really worth the trip. The other room is dedicated to various exhibits that change constantly. It was about quilts the day we visited and had nothing to do with the history of Pasadena which is what we were interested in learning about.

We visited the museum making time to go to the Gamble House. The exhibition was free, but small and the house itself was closed. Overall, we liked it and recommend it to anyone who goes to Gamble Hause, right next door

A multitude of documents, furnishings, decorative items and art works are to be seen. Housed in impressive abodes, we got an interesting appreciation of the life of the well to do in the past.
A tour was the highlight of the visit, hosted by a very good guide. It was great to see the beautiful mansion.

This is a quiet museum and I do not remember ever seeing it crowded. There are several buildings, inquire if all are open.
Nice old picture of Pasadena past.

Yes, it is a small museum, but the current California women artist exhibition Something Revealed is really something to behold. Some of the artists trained under the Hudson River School and it shows in their landscapes. In addition the curators from Maurine St. Gaudens Studio and docents are very well informed and sociable. I asked if there were any African American female art work and he took me to three paintings and one mask made up of cowrie shells and a wisp of blond hair. Their paintings and sculpture work rivaled some of the large museums in scope. This exhibit is being held over only until next Saturday April 13th, 2019 so you do not want to miss it. I also found walking around the grounds relaxing. You can tour The Fenyes Mansion, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, but that is only at 12:15 only on the days the museum is open. I did get an interesting view through the estate’s window and think I may go back later this year to take the docent led tour.

Do you want to know about Californian women artists from 1860-1960? Then go to this museum before April 13 when their current exhibit "Something Revealed" closes. Within 2 rooms they've put works by 120 different female artists including a woman artist for Disney. They have a well-stocked gift shop and give tours of the mansion in the early afternoons of Friday, Saturday and Sunday. What a wonderful way to spend an afternoon!

This small museum will take you less than an hour to visit. Its name, museum of history, is a little deceiving as the current exhibit on women artists doesn't fit the idea of history. That said, the current exhibit runs through the end of March and is outstanding. Tours of the mansion next door are only available once per day, three days per week.

A lovely little museum. When we went recently there was an exhibit of women artists in California. It was fascinating and well set up. The museum is so small that it could only display that exhibit. It seems they own some other wonderful art works that we shall have to go back and see another time, along with the beautiful estate house that is on the property. The latter only has tours on weekends.
