Paso Robles, California has well over 200 wineries and enjoys a deserved reputation for high quality wines. Drive up Vineyard Drive or along the east or west sides of Highway 101 on Highway 46, you’ll see dozens of stunning wineries and wine tasting rooms. But big doesn’t always mean better…
One of our favorite wine tasting stops is at F/S Cellars, somewhat hidden away in an industrial building complex on the southern end of Paso Robles. They are definitely not on the more frequented wine tourism trail, but well worth a visit.
Our last visit was on October 22, 2011, during the Paso Robles Harvest Wine Weekend. As a special treat they were offering free tri-tip barbecue burritos, and that was all the incentive we needed to go there.
The burritos were delicious, and we enjoyed them with tastes of Grenache Blanc, a Rose (I bought a bottle as a gift for my mother), Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cab Franc, and Merlot. I previously bought a really outstanding Pinot Noir from them (still haven’t opened it) and they are now sold out of that one. They somewhat seriously offered to buy it back.
Next door, they were allowing people to stop grapes. Some kids were getting down in the vat, turning themselves purple. It was fun entertainment for kids and adults.
You’ll find the small but stylish tasting room a comfortable place to visit, the wines hold their own against bigger and better known names in the Paso Robles area, and whomever is managing the tasting room when you visit, you can expect a friendly welcome.
The tasting room is open Thursday through Sunday, from 11:00 am until 6:00 pm. Visit them at 1337 Vendels Circle, Paso Robles, CA 93446. Phone is 805-226-8989. The tasting fee is $5, refundable with a purchase. See http://fscellars.com for more information.
