We must have missed all the butterflies. We did see a few though. The area is nice to walk around, clean and has a tiny truck gift shop. Parking is on the main road and I can see it being an issue when the butterflies are in season. Totally could have bypassed this.. but again, it's probably much better when the monarchs are around.

Everyone aware that the butterflies are hardly there in the warm months. We were there in the month of May and the best time is in the cold months. It is still beautiful and we saw quite a few owls, birds and squirrels, but only 1 butterfly.
The area, on the other hand, does a lot for butterflies, and therefore it is worth supporting around🙌

While we realized it was not the best time of year to visit, we didn’t realize that there wasn’t a single creature to be seen. We did enjoy reading the signage. Glad parking was free.

What a wonderful experience. We were on a LA to San Francisco drive and staying the night at Pismo Beach. My daughter found information that it was worth stopping here. We pulled off into the parking lot and had a beautiful walk to the butterfly grove. It was amazing to see all these butterflies together in their natural habitat. Completely free and well worth the stop.

In Pismo Beach is the Monarch Butterfly Grove. Monarch butterflies overwinter here. In January 2022, 22,000 were counted.
At the beginning of October, renovations were being carried out here (mending the fence and signs) and making it fit for winter (trimming the trees).
At the entrance it said it was closed. Opening times are from November to February. But on the homepage it says end of October to February, so we just went there based on luck since it was on the way anyway. And a particularly friendly ranger let us in and explained a bit.
It is a small park (a triangle, about 100 meters long, with lots of eucalyptus trees, which you can easily smell) at the end of North Beach Campground.
Actually you can go in there at any time. It is not cordoned off, there is no entry fee and the fence is only hinted at, consisting of small wooden logs.
Unfortunately there were only a few butterflies around. So their season hadn't started yet.
There are no toilets here. According to Google there are some at the front of the campground.

Amazing amount of butterflies in the trees.
There is some parking on the sea side/westside of the road and people also parked on the eastside across the road.
The monarch grove is very Limited - around 4 acers - but there are multiple hikes that you can take from here.

What a magical place this is- it’s really something to be able to see thousands of monarch butterflies as they cluster together to stay warm. A few pieces of advice:
- bring binoculars so you can zoom in closely
- arrive before 11 for parking. We got there around 9 and stayed a few hours. People were lining up in cars to get in when we left
- breathe deeply to get the scent of the eucalyptus groves
- check out the count on the white board!

This was a nice surprise. We walked here from our hotel in Pismo, it was a pleasant walk near the ocean. At first you don't notice the Monarchs, until you stand still and see them in the trees. It was a quick visit but nice to see the beautiful butterflies and learn more about their migration journey. I guess they are mostly there November - March, but we did see lots in mid-October.

Happened to be down in Pismo Beach in early October and on a whim, brought my family, including three kids.
The weather was perfect for a nice stroll outside through the grove. Like others have said, its not a HUGE habitat, but it’s not exactly small either. In early October we we’re definitely able to see plenty of Monarchs floating around without having to look hard. They flew about normally as if we weren’t even there, so that was nice. My kids enjoyed it, ages 9, 7, and 4.
I will say there is street parking on a fairly busy roadway, so you’ll need to cross a road with no crosswalks. If you have kids, keep them close as you cross.
Also, you can access Pismo State beach by going through the grove, although with the tides and such, I doubt the pathway to the water will be the same all the time.
Nonetheless, a great little spot to visit for a quick break!

Hi Karen. I was researching a trip from Ohio to California to see the Monarch butterflies in December 2021. During my research I discovered that the butterfly numbers dropped so low last year that they fear extinction for the sub species of butterfly. Do you know if there were many butterflies at Prismo last season. I have read reports of only a couple thousand butterflies counted along the entire California coast last season.
Thank you
Bernice

We went to the docent talk at 11:00. The butterflies move around more when it’s warm. The clusters were in the cooler spots as it was a warm day. If it’s a cooler day they’ll move and cluster in a warmer spot.
