First of all, it is a good location, very organized, and there are many docents.
Everything is open-air and, of course, cool at night in April.
There are three telescopes to look into, two are outside and one inside a building with no roof:
#1 outside, showed Mercury. It was one small, very faint dot on the horizon.
#2 outside showed just a dot. It was one star far away.
#3 inside showed just a dot. It was one star far away.
#3 inside (another scope) showed a cluster of stars.
Each time they tell you how far away they are.
The last telescope was showing a picture of space on a computer monitor and a docent was telling what it was. In another room there was a larger TV screen, but no docent was in that room. None of this was very spectacular.
At 9:30 pm we were told to go to the ampitheater; a large, round concrete seating area. There were about 50 people there and a man started to talk. It was very hard to hear him because he really needed a microphone.
We were sitting on wooden benches and leaning back on concrete.
First he talked about how the observatory was built by donations.
Then he talked about the many upcoming events at the observatory - in detail.
Then he talked about NASA, when men last went to the moon, they are going again, as well as other things they are doing.
This took nearly 20 minutes, and the longer he talked the harder he was to hear. It was too long and drawn out, especially when we were sitting on wood and concrete in the cold; so we left. It was disappointing.

Such a fun, quick activity to do with kids or a date. We were able to see Starlink Satellites, nearly 100 moving together. We also saw insane shooting stars and a peek of Saturn and its' rings! There were 4 telescope spots and a place to lay down and look up. Took maybe 30 minutes but easily could have spent an hour.

I'm totally charmed by the Community Observatory. This beautiful spot is a hidden gem ALL nearby should get to and enjoy. Free visits allow you to see the nearby planets and stars and the docents are so enthusiastic and helpful.
My wife and I visited on Friday for our anniversary. From the parking lot, it's a short walk up to where the observatory, the building, and the telescopes are set up. The sun sets much later this time of year, so we weren't able to catch anything until about 8:30p. If you're visiting, be sure to plan accordingly for darkness (meaning bring a sweater and if necessary, a flashlight or a light app for your phone).
For the first time ever, my wife and I got to see Jupiter and Saturn. The 4 telescopes we used were all rather high-powered so we saw the planets with EXCELLENT detail, including 4 of Jupiter's moons.
I can not wait to return. Even though our visit was short, the area is beautiful and the experience is worth the drive up from Sacramento.

This is a wonderful opportunity! Go on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday evening for an awesome experience. Start outside while a docent points out the solar system with a high powered laser. You won't crane your neck as you lean back on their special seating. You can even bring a blanket. Then inside you can view planets and stars through one of their huge telescopes! It is very cool! Oh...and other than a small parking fee this is FREE! Great family outing or Date Night! Check their website before you go in case of closure due to weather.

I had read about this on Trip Advisor, so while staying over in Placerville we ventured over to the college. First, to find, drive to the end of the road and turn left into the large parking lot. There are not any signs. Follow the lighted path ( short walk) to the observatory. Prepare to be Wow'ed! Some wonderful and knowledgeable volunteers with various telescopes and laser lights will open up the heavens and explain everything. So fascinating and beautiful. I just wish we lived closer so we could come more often! They are there every weekend night except Christmas/New Years- from 8:30-10 p.m. and it is free.

There are charts and videos to help explain everything that you are seeing and they have places you can sit and they even have multiple different telescopes.

-Veiwing Experience-
The CPRCO has a variety of telescopes that offer all different types of ocular viewing and perspective. Depending on the time of year, the biggest hits are deffinetly Jupiter and Saturn because of their massive size and the extent of detail that is clearly reconizeable. On hazy nights the stars are most attractive but observing planets, nebulae, galaxies, and other related objects does not give the full impression. Choosing a clear evening makes all the difference when it comes to seeing the planets in their full splendor. Another treat to see is the ISS and satilite flares; even commets, and meteors are sometimes passing by.
-Docent Experience-
The docents who run the open nights are all volunteers and genuine amateur astronomers who enjoy sharing their knowledge and fascination with the public about the night sky. They are usually friendly, social, and enthusiastic about the stars, children and families are especially welcomed. Each docent has a different level of knowladge and has a different way of sharing astronomy. It really depends on what kind of docents are voulenteering the night we visit, but they all have the same common ground: sharing the wonder of the heavens with the public and educating them with the universe as man has come to understand it to be--and they are able to teach at all different levels of comprehension which is perfect for the kids.
-Facility Experience-
There are two restrooms with sinks, provided at the observatory that are guaranteed to be clean. A water fountain is also available. The whole building (inside and out) is dimly lit with red lights just bright enough to see around the grounds. Most of the time there are outdoor telescopes as well as the main two inside the building. Off the beaten path is a sky theater that is designed for star gazers to sit back comfortably and look straight up into the sky peacefully. Though the CPRCO is entirely free, they rely on public donations to pay for the facilities matnence fees.
-Summery-
I am personally not that interested in astronomy, but I love being fascinated with the beauty in our little corner of the universe. The docents contribute to the experience as much as the fashion in the sky. It has definitely been a great place to take the family on the weekends for over eight years.

It's dark with great star views. Usually have a proctor on duty giving star tours and a big telescope.
If you want to use the scope or expert make sure they're going to be there. Cloudy, or clouds coming and they don't open up, though you can still walk the trail and view. You want the scope.

We have been to their Solar Saturdays, and many Friday and Saturday nights, as well as lectures by people from NASA. They also will bring at least one telescope to special public events around El Dorado County.
At the observatory they have several different telescopes that you stand in line to look through. Each night they may be aimed at a star, or a galaxy, or the moon, or at other planets. The volunteer docents are all very knowledgeable, enthusiastic, patient and helpful.
It is an uphill walk from the parking lot, yet it is fairly wheelchair accessible.

We have visited the observatory 3-4 times and its simply fantastic. We saw the international space station, rings of saturn and much more. The highlight is to sit and listen to the docent talk in the amphitheater. The volunteers are very knowledgeable. We brought our exchange student from Tokyo and he was awestruck having never seen so many stars. on top of being amazing, the observatory is free to visitors!
