Beautiful Lake
mar. 2021
I thought this lake was beautiful and would have loved to be there during the warmer months when there was more activity. The whole area is nice and if you are here, come check out the lake.

Warm clean and not very many people.Great place to beat the heat. Some places are hard to access.Water edge is rocky in places and small steep trails are. the only way in some of the more remote areas.

Now is not the time

We drove from Eureka to Redding and stopped a few places on the way. You can see the extensive fire damage that will take years to look better.
If you are a boater then the lake is fine to use but nothing else is suitable in its current condition.

Another bad place.

It was horrible. It was all burnt up from the Carr fire. We spent part of the day and left. Brandy creek smelled horrible like an unflushed urinal. We ended up going to Weaverville for the rest of the day instead. Noticed alot of homeless bums out there too. Seems like they are bussing them in out there.

Beautiful blue water

Always a beautiful lake to drive out to and take in the scenery. Prior to the Carr Fire the entire hillside was green and lush in the spring to early summer. I would recommend renting a boat and taking a cruise across the lake or better yet finding someone to take you sailing. Beautiful blue waters on Whiskeytown Lake

Nice find

Hotel receptionist recommended this lake- had no idea it was there. Hot day, nice to sit on the edge and cool off. Has picnic tables and looked good for kids- lots of rafts and floats.

Be sure to at least stop by to view this lake not far off the highway. I also rode down to see Crystal Creek falls trail, but did not end up hiking it.

Nice lake but not our fave...
jul. 2020
We got a little confused when entering the park - so used to a booth system like Yosemite so we kept driving around and realized we were getting further from civilization before turning around. Eventually realized you have to park in that first lot on your right, get out and go purchase your parking pass (or show your membership card to get a pass, in our case the 4th grade pass). All the various sites around the lake will say parking permit required. Ok, once we figured that out we headed to the easy "Crystal Creek Falls" hike the ranger recommended. Where to park was not clearly marked in my opinion, we parked in some dirt and then walked up an incline to see a tiny the parking lot (5 cars?) and realized we were probably in some kind of overflow lot (also only for 4-5 cars)

It was a super short hike which I was thankful for since it was hot as balls even at 10am. To our delight, we had the waterfall to ourselves and it was tons of funs. Shallow enough for the kids to get right in and play with the cold water, which you eventually get used to. Water shoes would have been nice. After 30-35 mins of our alone time, swarms of people starting to come in and I mean full on picnic-goers with chairs, coolers, etc. Like 30 people so we said peace out!

Next stop was the Oak Bottom Marina, also not super easy for us to find and we ended up at the campsite. Feel like signage could be better everywhere at this place. Basically you need to take the side road to the left of the lot with all the trailers and boats to get to the marina area. Clean bathrooms upon arrival, however the millennial workers are the marina were sooo grumpy and annoyed to help us. All the boats were booked even on a Monday because of the holiday weekend. You can book a boat in advance only if you book the whole day and that is exactly what happened. Our only options was double kayaks for 2 hrs which was fine and a pretty generous 30-40 min grace period was given. Now for the kayaking- that is way too long and too big of a lake to kayak with a child that doesn't really help with the paddling. I was dying trying to get back to the dock in the end with all the wakes from the boats and going against the wind. Struggle was real!!

As for the water it was fine, fairly clean and refreshing however the scenery was a bit of a bummer with all the fire damage. Especially after having spent the day at the lovely Castle Lake the day prior. Not much a beach area anywhere that I could see. All in all not bad, not the prettiest ever but hopefully the trees will recover and the area will be beautiful again.

Awesome lake. You can take your family to oak bottom or brandy creek. Which both have sandy beaches. O as k botto6has camp ground to stay for weekend with a small store. And your 10 mins from Redding if you need something. The water is super clean and refreshing especially in the Redding heat. There are lots of trails to hike, whiskeytown falls is awesome. If your driving through in the summer hop in and cool off you'll be glad you did.

Whiskeytown Lake and Brandy Creek picnic area - 55 year old memories
jan. 2020
Although the Brandy Creek picnic area was closed for the season, we were in Redding for a funeral and had not picked our time of year to re-live 55 year old memories, so we walked in anyway. What a beautiful picnic area. With large boulders and green moss everywhere it was almost fantasy-like. We had childhood pictures from 55+ years ago and we enjoyed re-creating the moment. Its a shame that the lake water level is so much lower than when were there but so many things must change over time.
