The fort is undergoing a renovation and seems like it is being cancelled as well. I am all for telling the truth with history but it seems like they are making an effort to cancel anything that has to do with Sutter. I think you can tell the whole story without totally wiping out history.

We were so excited about seeing this first but… the Fort was built to accommodate Gold rush; turned out 3/4 of the fort was under construction and we only saw 4 rooms furnished. 4 rangers sitting around and no one giving tours or telling you about the fort. Thank God it was free because it wouldn’t have been worth $2.00.

So, let's start with some basics:

The only original remaining structure of Sutter's Fort is the "main building"--a two story structure in the center of the complex. It was built between 1841 and 1843. Everything else at "Sutter's Fort State Historic Park" is a reconstruction, based on historic documentation.

Entry is $5 for adults; $3 for ages 6 to 17; and children enter for free. Sutter's Fort State Historic Park does not have its own parking lot. Metered city parking is available on 26th and K streets, and there are several public parking lots in the vicinity.

It has been 25 years since my last visit. Since then, a lot of re-construction and restoration work has been performed. There are a more displays and demonstrations than I remember. (Coincidentally, school field trips were taking place during my visit. I kept my distance, but was able to observe staff and volunteers give their presentations and conduct their demonstrations.)

If you're interested in history, Sutter's Fort is well worth the visit. Everyone can walk away with from their visit with a number of different of interpretations, based on context of analysis.

BTW ... The State Indian Museum is adjacent to the Fort. If you have the time, you can tour that museum for a separate admission fee.

It’s a very small site. I get to see the history of the Sutter Fort. The ticket is five dollars but I spent a lot on gifts lol. If you don’t want to get inside, the park outside is also a good place to visit.

I wouldn’t put it on the top of the list, but if you have a lot of time to visit downtown, you can take a look at it.

It was Museum day and overcast. There were fewer docents and no living history but the docents that were there were terrific. We always learn something new. Special thanks to Mike & Annette.

A nice historic gem. Very nicely preserved and a great look at the past. Interesting history as this is the place that the rescuers of the infamous Donner party came from and it is here where the survivors ended up recuperating. Many other interesting points of history. A few enactors giving presentations makes it a nice place to visit and learn.

Fort Sutter is a recreation (except the main interior building) of a fort constructed by John Sutter, the original settler of Sacramento. Sutter used to be celebrated, and the Fort was staffed with period actors. But Sutter has been the subject of revisionist history in recent years. Some of it is deserved, as he was a fraud and failure in many ways. Other criticism is progressive “colonialist, genocidal, blah, blah, blah” stuff. The result is that the Fort has been scaled back to just the buildings, some decorated rooms, and a video about the deconstruction of the Sutter mythology and attempts to connect with indigenous communities. They seem to be deciding where to go from here with the Fort. One thing they could do is add some signage or an audio tour explaining what was in the furnished/decorated rooms of the Fort. It’s interesting to walk around and look at the rooms, but there’s not much here to do besides that.

ce lieu est assez difficile à localiser.
c'est un state park payant de 5$ et qui ne comporte pas de parking privé, mais qui relate bien la vie des colons

A recreated (in 1890) fort with displays of what life might have looked like on the site of the original New Helvetia.

The best this about this museum was the film the showed that featured speakers from the State Park, an author/professor and representatives from the local indigenous tribes.

When Sutter came to America to get the American dream, he murdered, threatened, destroyed local indigenous people to be his labor. He threatened them until they participated. The sad truth is that the man for whom the Fort is named is recognized because he is the Man who had the most power in the area. It was meaningful to me to realize, “yeah duh, of course that’s what happened!”

One placard in the museum said a Native Hawaiian woman lived and worked on the property and was married to another native Hawaiian man, but was thought to be “in a relationship with Sutter.” This made me really mad because we know that women in history are mentioned this way it often means the man with more power was raping her and keeping her for himself. She likely didn’t have a choice in the matter. I’d like the museum to clear up this “relationship” if they’re going to tell her story.

All in all. I breezed through the exhibits and went to the California Indian Museum on the same property to learn about the indigenous people of California.

Stopped off at Sutters Fort whilst passing through Sacramento. It was interesting to get the history of the Fort and how it and it’s previous occupants contributed to the formation of California.

The staff were excellent and very informative.

Entry price was very reasonable and we all enjoyed the visit.
