Having lived in the Bay area for 3 years I drove past the Golden Gate National Cemetery (GGNC) on many occasions as I travelled up or down HWY 280. It was always a poignant and somewhat impressive sight. Having left the Bay Area some 11 years ago I finally visited it when on a business trip to the USA from the UK. The GGNC is 161 acres and has 113,000 grave sites of more than 143,500 individuals laid to rest. There is a visitor office where you can get a map of the cemetery and find specific gravesites. The GGNC homes the graves of several distinguished figures, such as Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz (Section C Grave 1). There are also the graves of 15 recipients of the Medal of Honor from conflicts including WWII, Vietnam, Korea, the Indian Wars and others. Go up 'Mound Drive' where the flagpole is to get a good vista out across the entire burial site to the NWest and NEast. Well worth a visit.

I was blown away. I was driven to the airport when I saw the cemetery. It was so huge that I stop to spend time inside. So many soldiers dead for their country. Amazing to see all these tombs. Respect and honor to all heroes. RIP

This is a great testament to all the veterans who served our country. My father in law is interned here.

A beautiful but somber reminder of how many gave so much for our freedoms. Thankfully, unlike some private cemeteries, Golden Gate National Cemetery is very well maintained.
The fact that what one's ethnicity or economic status is such a non-issue here as all markers are the same other than name and rank and dates reminds us of how we should treat each other.

I went to the Golden Gate National Cemetery on a Bucket List trip. I went to see an Uncle's grave who died long before I was born. It was a very memorable experience and one I treasure, he had such a hard life and I am his only visitor in probably 30 years, maybe one of two ever.
The Cemetery is located far away from the main part of San Francisco, about a 15 minute walk from the BART San Bruno Station. It looks to be sort of an Industrial area that a lot of immigrants live in, I bought some flowers at a Convenience Store / Gas station that borders the Cemetery's eastern side. The store had a lot of Mexican products and the owner looked to be Indian or Pakistan.
The grounds and facilities are really beautiful and so well designed. I learned how they keep the Grave Markers so straight, there is a long concrete sleeve buried under the marker, the markers have a rectangle knife like extension on the bottom that fits into the sleeve, the result is a sturdy marker foundation that allows the alignment of rows and squares. They work hard on maintaining the markers and grounds.
This is the first time I ever visited a Military Cemetery, I got the grave plot number and map from the website, finding the grave was not too difficult; great system especially if you have never been there before.
I would like to than the Veteran's Administration for their outstanding job and to the Cemetery Staff, Appreciate it!

...and super well maintained and almost empty. What do you want more in a cemetery? Lots and lots of walking in peace. Just great.

This cemetery was breath taking. The tribute paid to these brave soldiers priceless. Many of the soliders had their wives & children laid to rest bedside then.

This is a huge military cemetery that is always well cared for and flags are placed for all appropriate remembrance days. I did go by it about 6 months ago and some renovation and at the end of a row of head stones a Dead End sign was placed. Sorry folks, I thought that was hilarious and wish I had my camera at hand.

I brought my dog to a Veterans Day ceremony and nobody said anything to me about it. I imagine, you've got to pick up your dog poop.
