Elephant Seals are one of my absolute fave creatures - they’re feisty, animated, and boisterous things! Be sure to come during their winter breeding season to really see them in all their flamboyant glory!
The bulls (males) are known for their violent sparring sessions, fighting over status as ruler over the harems, and their roars are incredibly fascinating - and each bull has a roar unique to him that all the other seals immediately recognize! Such fascinating beasts!
But the females put on quite a show themselves! They battle it out with screams, bites, and sand-flipping matches over valuable pup-rearing beachfront real estate and it’s truly a sight to see!
And then there’s the adorable seal pups of course - tiny (but not so tiny, bc these seals are so huge lol) little babies cling to their mommas and do a little fighting and fussing of their own, especially with the seagulls who actually try to steal some milk haha!
If you hang out long enough during breeding/pupping season, you may just get lucky enough to witness a birth - I saw one once and it was such an experience!
Another experience is to witness how the seals battle the waves during the annual king tides - which often coincide with their breeding season. It’s chaotic and sometimes sad - so if you’re visiting during these times, just be prepared to witness all sides of nature - even the unpleasant realities.
Elephant Seals are absolutely massive - with males able to get up to 5,000 lbs in weight. And in spite of their girth, they can really mooove - when you see two bulls chasing each other, you’ll be glad you’re viewing from a high up vantage point! Luckily the viewing boardwalks are elevated on a cliff for everyone’s safety lol.
You’ll find these well maintained boardwalks in beautiful San Simeon along the central California coast. The sunsets here are spectacular so I highly recommend trying to catch one.
There’s lots of parking but it gets very crowded during busy seasons and the parking lots are dirt surfaces with tons of deep pot holes so be careful and drive slowly.
They say the vista point is “wheelchair accessible” and I agree that the boardwalk portions are definitely accessible - but you have to get to them from these bumpy, rocky parking lots so that may be a challenge.
The south end view point usually has the best views and the most seals congregating. The northern-most boardwalk takes you to Boucher Trail which is 2 miles long one way and has a bunch of other seal beach viewpoints.
There are no restrooms so come prepared. There are often volunteer docents walking around the crowds if you have any questions or just want information in general. They’re all very friendly and eager to share their seal knowledge!

Interesting and nice things to do. They are big but not as many on this picture in July, but we still saw some of them. Must see in San Simeon

We stopped here again today in August and not too many seals. There is a photo attached that shows the different seasons. Every season has different elephant seal behaviors. This part of California is magical and there are lots of great look out points past the seals too. Take the time to explore if you have never been here before.

If you aren't too far from this spot, then it is worth a stop. TONS of seals laying on the rocks and beach. A nice walking path along the coast/cliff. The views are very nice. Lots of parking available in a dirt lot, that was filled with deep potholes. It is a cool spot to see,,, at least once.

This is right off the road so it would be a shame to miss it.
It's fairly large so parking wasn't a problem.
Take the opportunity to see these majestic creatures.
It was fairly crowded but not to the point it distracted from the experience.
We also saw them on the vista point before it.

Great stop to see Elephant Seals along the PCH! The state of California has done a great job to put up informative signs about the seals and the vista points and trails are right above the beach to get great views but not allow human interaction. We parked at the lot just north of the main lot and there were only a few vehicles there. There is a trail to connect with the parking lot to the south. There is also a trail north of the parking lot we were at that one can walk and see another small beach with seals. We also saw several otters out in the kelp beds just off of the beach. Lots of birds and rock squirrels.
Watch out for POISON OAK that is growing in the brush right along the viewing rails. You could be standing in it. Not something one looks for down by the beach.

One of the coolest stops on the PCH! Tons of seals on the beach for as far as you could see. Nice boardwalk for viewing them. Highly recommended!

Came here in mid-March and saw many elephant seals still lying around, flapping sand, and making the occasional barking sound.

It was our sons wish to spend christmas day watching the elephant seals. We took a christmas picnic lunch, put on out christmas hats and spent the day at the rookery. we walked along south beach boardwalk, north beach and right along the path for some distance. we saw alpha males fighting to blood - and even continuing the fight in the water. we watched a newborn pup nursing, juveniles practising fighting, lots of big males making lots of noise.
It was a great day and we all enjoyed it. Only suggestion is there needs to be restrooms - there are none.

This stop exceeded our expectations! When we were told a day before that there was a "bull elephant seal the size of your car" on a state park beach, which was therefore closed temporarily, we thought "yeah, right." The gate attendant was not kidding! These animals are HUGE! We were mesmerized and stunned at how close you could view these magnificent creatures. Loved it!
