First lit in 1875, the Piedras Blancas lighthouse is a National Historic Landmark as well as a designated Outstanding Natural Area! It’s surrounded by a marine sanctuary and the beaches and rocks are full of seabirds and elephant seals and more.
If you can manage to get tickets for a tour, I highly recommend you jump on it - they’re infrequent with limited availability - but so worth it!
The tour starts at an old, out-of-use motel nearby - then you all get in your cars and follow the guide into the light station complex. After parking, you meet the tour guide for the grounds and they give a talk. Then you’re free to explore for the rest of your allotted time.
There are lots of historical buildings on the grounds to explore - with little “museums” in the gift shop, fog signal house, and lighthouse itself. You can even still see the foundation area of the original 1906 keeper’s house - but the building was moved to nearby Moonstone Beach. You can’t tour it but it’s available to rent for overnight stays!
Sadly, the top three floors of the lighthouse had to be taken down due to repeated earthquake damage - so the original lens (a first order Fresnel) was moved and is on display in nearby Cambria. But the signal is still functional and flashes every 10 seconds on its temporary replacement lens.
They do have plans to fully restore the lighthouse to all its former glory - but are still trying to raise the funds - they have a GoFundMe on their website if you’re interested.
The grounds have tons of trails all around with amazing views of all the beaches and “piedras blancas” or “white stones” - covered in sea birds and seals! Definitely don’t miss out on at least some of them.
My only complaint is that they only give one tour a day (starting at 945am) and only allow you a total of two hours to explore - which is definitely not even close to being enough imo.
Our tour guide’s talk was 40-45 mins long so that left only about an hour to see all the museums and buildings and explore the trails. And they’re strict on the time limit too :(
But it’s still totally worth it - and actually it’s probably better for the protected nature environment lol! So see it if you get a chance bc it’s a rare luxury!

Elephant seals! Everywhere! It was the highlight of our trip. Hundreds of elephant seals barking, swimming, sunning and playing.

Let's face it, a lighthouse is not exactly something you've never seen before. That said, this one is quite iconic and right up there with Peggy's Cove. It's not always open however, so you best look it up before you go.

A great team of docents make this an interesting experience, it starts with an overview and then we were allowed to self-guide over the property with skillfully placed docents to answer questions. We really enjoyed this. Very Covid Friendly.

Access to the Lighthouse Station grounds is by guided tour only. Reservations are required. The tour is approximately 2 hours. Part is conducted by a volunteer docent and part is on your own. The tour was well organized. Our group was divided into 3 smaller groups. We were fortunate to see the great white rock when it was not shrouded in fog. The native flora is striking and the grounds are well maintained. There is a circular trail to walk to observe sea life, see station buildings, historic dwellings and the lighthouse. The ground floor of the lighthouse is open and contains artifacts and other items of interest. Docents are available throughout the area to answer questions and point out interesting facts about the sea and light station. This has remained a working lighthouse since 1874 when it became a station managed by the U.S.Lighthouse Service. There is a small gift shop on the premises.

Good spot on the edge of the Pacific. Lots of activity in the ocean. Lighthouse itself was closed but all grounds open.

After meeting at the old (closed) motel north of the light station, we caravaned into the light station property and parked. We were divided into several groups each with a tour guide. Most of the buildings we could not go into as they are still in use, but did see several inside. However, the grounds were far more interesting than the buildings, Being on the coast we saw sea lions, otters and elephant seals, as well as, lots of sea birds. for now, you cannot move about the grounds without your tour guide, they are hoping, in the future that that will change.

Wonderful tour of this amazing spot. You must reserve before, you can pay online or at tour. They meet you at an abandoned motel and then you follow in your own car to the light station. Very interesting and informative docents take you on the walk about the property. They have a cute gift shop. Tour is about 2 hours.

About a few miles north from the Elephant Seal Rookery. Just a nice place to see and visit. Reminds me of the east coast. Nice place for lunch stop.

Can you visit without booking a tour?
Skrevet 14. mai 2021
What days are the tours given? Can we make a reservation?
Skrevet 27. mai 2019
Their website has the days and times (morning). There are more days available during summer. I believe you can make reservations but you probably don't need to. They have many docents and split up the crowd that arrives into smaller groups.

Medford, Oregon
My name is Theresa McBeth. My grandfather was Clifford E. McBeth who was a lighthouse keeper and my father was Clifford L. McBeth who grew up at the light station. I would like to know the best time of year to come visit the light station and see where my grandfather worked and my father grew up. I live in Medford, OR so I will either drive or fly. Maybe some ideas on where I could stay also. I am planning on being in the Cambria area for at least a week.

The lighthouse is very well restored and I think you will enjoy your visit. Storms are active through Feb/March and i would come after that for a more pleasant stay. If you are staying in Cambria for a week, I would use that as your base to go see the light house. It is about a half hour drive from there. Be sure to go past the light house to the old small motel which is where the tour begins, Allow time to visit Hearst Castle while you are here.

They offer tours every day except Sunday & Wednesday. No reservations required. Visitors meet at 9:45 a.m. at the former Piedras Blancas Motel located 1.5 miles north of the light station on Highway 1.
See their website for more info.
