travel a lot in calif and nevada.
forced to use my hotspot. wifi most unstable of any library.
forced to use high back chairs to plug-in laptop. floor plugs to round tables locked.
forced to wear a mask.
forced to pay for parking. even on Saturday when courts are closed

Un edificio carino ed elegante, soprattutto per la parte architettonica ma nel complesso semplice, ad eccezione di qualche parte decorativa come il portone con il timpano ed i rilievi con le figure di filosofi come Platone ed Aristotele.

This is at the heart of Santa Barbra with a great book and media collections, lovely children's section, and 3 galleries that feature local art groups and artists. Always worth a stop and your support. reading and appreciating the local culture is very important

The library is not only a masterpiece of architecture, but it is also a force for good in the community. The children's library on the lower lever has amazing programs and wonderful books and materials--even toys for toddlers. The variety of materials in a wide area of media is also amazing--seldom do I have a long wait for books I have reserved. Their book club and volunteer program is also wonderful. Keep up the good work

Since I have an inquisitive mind, I have always loved libraries and the fact that they are escapes into silence and mountains of books and other types of information. Well, they still have the books...but silence has been consumed by all kinds of electronic beeps, answered mobile phones and people practically camping out.
For example, one guy took over a the same table everyday that I was there and had his computer along with opened cans of progresso soup and and other homey comforts.
Librarians no longer speak in hushed tones anymore or give you mean looks if you should break the code of silence.
One day, I went to another table to use my computer and a guy sat next to me and rustled his plastic bags for nearly 5 minutes and ended up pulling out tall thin bottles of hot sauce and other "comforts of home" type things. Kinda funny for sure!
I still love the library but society is obviously careening downhill. There is a long list of rules posted on a sign board upon entering the building about how to use the library. If you break these rules, you will be asked to leave. However, no one seems to be asked to leave. I still see people bathing in the restroom, making noise, starting fights, eating and drinking etc. Oh well. It is all so very progressive. Or, should I say Progresso?
Soup anyone?

A few days before Christmas, my three year old daughter and I spent several hours at the new Children's Library at the main library. It is a bright and organized space, with reading nooks, low chairs and tables, and kid-height displays plus interactive toys for younger visitors. The day we visited we lucked out and watched two Christmas specials in their meeting space before we had to leave. As we were leaving, the librarians were setting up for a craft making session inspired by a book. We could happily have spent even more time there doing that too. This is a wonderful addition to the many kid-friendly features of Santa Barbara.

My husband and I always check out the local library everywhere we travel. They are often overlooked by most visitors and shouldn't be. You can usually learn valuable information about the area you are visiting. Many have art museums attached to them (as this one does) or have wonderful art in the library itself. Many are also historical buildings. The reason the Santa Barbara main downtown library (just off State Street) only gets 3 stars is that the outside has not been kept up, which is odd since SB is so beautiful, and it seems to be an attraction for the homeless. We noticed a large homeless population everywhere we went in SB which was surprising to us. Anyway once you are inside, you'll see some art at the Faulkner Gallery and inside the actual main library rooms. As with many libraries this one has a place to buy used books. I got a soft cover book for 50 cents. It is also a good place to sit and rest for awhile.
