So I walked here in about 10 minutes! It is only open Tuesday nights and Saturday. It was nice to see that there are still alot of older history buffs that get a kick out of building toy trains and constructing a miniature city/country. I recognized the era from the late 50s or 60s cuz that is when I was born..Ed and the other older men volunteers knew their area train and railroad history very well..They also confirmed what I already knew that it is getting harder and harder to find toy trains. I also observed that they are very passionate about their museum and it shows!

There is a small library with books and magazines about trains, but I was informed that I could NOT check out any books since I am NOT a member of the museum. However the older gentleman said I was welcome to read any material in the comfortable chair. He also went out of his way to tell me a little bit of history of the building! HE stated that the museum is a combination of 2 buildings and the part where the library and bathrooms are is older than the museum area

I was glad that there was a coke machine in this little gem cuz it was humid.I also left a donation since these men take such a great effort to keep this little museum gem open. After my visit, I went outside to take the Caltrain to downtown San Jose!

We had a great time here. Lots of good history, memorabilia and fantastic HO and N scale exhibits. You can spend 30 minutes here or hours depending on your time frame. Located right down the street from Santa Clara University

The hotel that I'm in is within walking distance to this place. It is the oldest train depot in California and maybe the second oldest working train depot in the nation. No matter. I had a great time just watching the trains ( HO and N scale) go by in scenic dioramas of cities, hills, and valleys all done with great detail and care. The model trains are the attraction, but this place has other historical artifacts as well.
This is a great stop if you're into model trains. The kids, grand kids and everyone else would love it!

This Railroad History Museum has quite some collections hard to be found in other railroad museums. The historic Santa Clara Caltrain Depot was built in 1863, and serves as a working museum since 1985. Renovation and preservation are still in progress by volunteers. It has 4 buildings comprise the historic district: the Depot, the Control Tower, the Speeder Shed, and the Section Tool House. Now it only opens to the public Tuesday evenings from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm and on Saturdays from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Admission is free.

The control tower is quite unique. I have not seen that in any other train museum. It has a General Railway Signal Co. Model 2, unit-lever type electro-mechanical interlocking machine. This machine controlled many switches and signals from the north end of the Santa Clara yard to the junction switches and signals controlling the tracks to and from both San Francisco and Oakland. The tower and its’ interlocking machine were used until 1993. The control was then transferred to the Control Center at the San Jose depot.

A large and varied collection of historic railroad artifacts are on display in the Edward Peterman Museum of Railroad History located in the Depot. A highlight is the Oregon-Washington Railroad & Navigation business car #184 since 2009. This museum also has a reasonal good size of model railroad to visit.

Santa Clara Depot has four portions:
1. Former passenger area contains passenger waiting area, stationmasters office, restrooms, and the baggage storage room.
2. The original freight house is now used for a meeting room and museum artifact display area.
3 The freight house extension. Now used for the scale model railroad and artifact displays.
4. The former Acme Freight Company office. Now transformed to represent a turn of the century railroad boardroom.

Within the Depot are two operational HO and N scale model railroad layout displays depicting various railroad eras and operations venues. Constant work by our members on these layouts provide an ever changing panorama, giving our visitors and members a better understanding of the different aspects of model railroading.

Recommend to everyone.

I pass by to take a look when going for the Cal Train. Too bad it was close at that time.
It seems to be a community project by volunteer. There is a huge train cart outside though.

I've lived in San Jose for 25 years and have traveled to 19 states in search of little known treasures, only to find one sitting in my front yard.

The museum is currently a work in progress, with dedicated volunteers recreating sample railroad routes. It is a small display but impressive for the amount of detail.

I wanted an afternoon out in a relaxed environment and that's what I got.

If you like trains (and even if you don't know it yet), you must see the model railroad in the museum. It's huge, long, with lots of trains, and great props. It's fascinating to look at a dozen of trains going to somewhere.
Besides that, the museum has some old railroad stuff worth checking out.

If you like model railroads this is a fun model railroad to visit. Times to visit are limited; currently it is Tuesday night and Saturday. The depot itself is historic and interesting building. There is an older railroad car outside the museum area. There is limited free parking by the museum. The location is at the Cal Train station in Santa Clara.

We visited the museum on a Tuesday evening (it is open from 6-9 pm on Tuesdays) and my 3-year-old was fascinated, although he sometimes wanted to touch the model trains rushing by... We spent an hour with watching them, actually we did not see anything else, but the two giant train tables. The staff was very friendly and it was clear that they are crazy about the railway.
