We stopped here to help our toddler burn off energy while being mentally stimulated. There were plenty of activities for him to do both, most of which were under cover which was good on a hot day.

Located in a large park near the Golden Gate bridge this children's museum has a number of buildings containing activities for young children.
There are also some outdoor exhibits and an indoor skating ring.
The area is relatively small and does not take advantage of the surrounding park.
For parents and grandparents there aren't enough benches.
Expensive entry fee, no printed receipts available.

This place was a great choice to visit with my kid during the Thanksgiving holiday week. We arrived shortly after opening at 10am and felt super comfortable. Crowds definitely thickened toward noon. We were making a day of it so we took the Golden Gate Bridge ferry from SF to Larkspur (check Sausalito or Tiburon for better locations, but that time worked the best for us) and then it was about a $20 ride app to the discovery museum.
My child is a very young (disabled) 8 year old. The museum website says it's optimal for ages 0-8 and that was right on target for us. The outdoor play structures were awesome; seasonal activities included "paint my ride" giant paintbrushes + yellow paint + truck statues; my kid's favorite was an "iceless skating" indoor rink. The food concession (Sprout?) is the same as at the Oakland Fairyland, so my kid enjoyed the rocket quesadilla and I had a wrap that sat well with me - fresh, real food, thumbs up.
The tickets aren't cheap. What you pay for: Beautiful surroundings, the California weather we know and love, unique activities, enough space to just be and enjoy.

We stopped by on the 4th of July when there was admission by donation and my kids had a blast. My older kid who was 4 moved through the various exhibits and tried out the more scientific stuff. My 1 year old loved the room where there was a trampoline that felt like a water bed (water bouncer?).
Outside, there was also a unique play areas including the foam blocks, pirate ship, long slide. If you want to go near the truck painting, I'd suggest bringing along an extra change of clothes.

Management of the Bay Area Discovery Museum,
I am writing to you after visiting the museum today with my three children and family. We were very excited to spend the time together as a family, enjoy an adventure, and see some of the fun exhibits at your museum. Our feeling of the experience, however, was completely soured when we witnessed an adult drag queen parading around the museum and trying to take photos with small children. My husband and I were shocked. I’ve been thinking the entire day about why the museum staff think it is at all appropriate to have a drag queen interacting with children, trying to take pictures with them, and using their presence to validate and further their ideology. I understand it is pride month, but trying to influence and sexualize your targeted audience of kids under 8 is disgusting and perverse; it’s an indoctrination strategy that is not what we paid for. How is introducing sexuality to young toddlers and kindergartners appropriate? Why is it ok for a drag queen to try to push themselves on my children at a discovery museum? Why should I or anyone that I know, ever return to this museum thinking that my children’s privacy and innocence will be respected?
Thank you for considering my position. You have a wonderful museum, it is sad that it is tainted by the perverse sexualization of children.

Friendly staff. We visited during a rainy day and umbrellas were provided. Our youngest is 7.5 years old and felt that that was too old for this museum. The views of the GGB are close and great!

We visited this museum with another family with kids ranging in ages from 2-10. Everyone had fun!! The weather was beautiful on the day we visited, so our kids were happy to spend the majority of our time with the outside activities, and there were plenty of options for them to rotate through. We really appreciated that there was something for each age group. The bathrooms were also nice--clean, with toddler sized toilet seats built into each regular seat (at least in the women's anyway). The cafe onsite is nut-free and has all options--the prices reflected that, so we did not eat there. That wasn't a problem though, because you can leave and re-enter as many times as you like and there was plenty of open field to picnic in just outside the museum.
Parking is free and plentiful.
My only complaint was that they aren't open later. Even after 4hrs playing there, my kids were not ready to leave. It would be easy to spend a whole day here.
Overall, highly recommend!

We have been going there since my grandson could crawl. Now he is exploring all of the park because he is 6. Always a unique activity for all ages and abilities

What is the best way to visit this place?
1. Drive? will the parking easily available? or
2. Public transport? i see 2miles walking, whether it is walkable with kids in tow
3. Bicycle? any advise on the track and trail for bicycle?
Skrevet 19. april 2019
I think driving is the best choice. There is a lot of parking area available near the museum.

Is this museum suitable for an 11 and 13 year old?
Skrevet 29. juli 2018
I think it’s better for younger children to be honest. There are a couple of rooms they might find interesting but overall I think they’d be bored.

Are there eating areas? Are outside food allowed?
