We visited this mission after going to Vallejo's house. It's worth a visit. I thought the chapel was nice and the courtyard with the fountain is relaxing. The paintings of all of the missions were nice.

The Sonoma state park includes the remains of Mission St. Francis Solano, Mexican barracks, and adjoining buildings and garden, all just off the central town plaza, as well as Gen. Mariano Vallejo's estate Lachryma Montis (about a 15" walk along the walking path), and Gen. Vallejo's Petaluma Adobe, to which you must drive. The guides at the Mission and at the Vallejo home are well-informed and can give you a detailed historical account. Although the original mission chapel (ca. 1823) was destroyed, there is a newer one built in the 1860s. A gift shop adjoins the barracks exhibits, and there is a film as well as display panels. You can walk through the Vallejo home and also visit the guest house El Delirio, the old reservoir/pond, and the general's son's retreat cottage up the hill. Admission fees are very reasonable and cover all the sites.

This is the last of the Spanish missions in California, actually built under Mexican rule. There were a number of exhibits on the missions in general, as well as this one. Parking was a little tough. Admission is $3.00 per person but also includes General Vallejo Home, which is fairly close by. There was a candle-making demonstration when we were there. Worth a visit.

Although the Solano mission today is just a partial remnant of the original complex, it still provided a fascinating look at an aspect of early California culture that this reviewer had not been previously aware of.
Located catty-corner from the northeast corner of Sonoma Plaza, the Solano mission is open for visitors to take self-guided tours of the four reconstructed rooms. The cost per adult is $3.00 (which seems very inexpensive for *anything* in California). The furnishings in each room give an idea of how it may have looked back in the days when Spain vied with Russia for control of the Pacific coast. Maps, pictures, and text panels provide historical context. And in one one is a fine display of watercolors of many other old California missions, all done by one artist. Note too the thickness of both the interior and exterior adobe walls of the building's rooms. The largest enclosure is the high-ceilinged chapel, which is almost primitive in construction, but still dignified, with authentic pictures and relics hung along the walls.
After walking around inside, we took a turn around the courtyard behind the building. It is a peaceful place, with examples of the herbs and trees that might have been found in the original complex. There is a lot of rosemary in the beds immediately outside the backdoor, and one can find a few small pomagranate trees growing in the central area toward the old well. At the back of the yard is a enormous stand of cacti. We sat on the benches for a little while in the shade there and watched the many small birds come and go in the foliage -- among them were Yellow-Rumped Warblers and Eastern Bluebirds.
Overall, the Solano mission was an engaging experience, and a nice break from the bustle of the modern world outside its doors.
As other reviewers have noted, one's admission receipt is good for the Gen Vallejo mansion down the road too (reviewed separately), as long as it is visited on the same day. There doesn't seem to be any dedicated parking for the mission, so we just parked along the plaza and walked the short distance up to it.

The State Park people are wonderful - they are so knowledgeable and make it "come to life". They were just decorating for the holidays while we were there and it was lovely. They are bringing back La Posada this year - i bet that is wonderful. Sadly the gift store is closed on Wednesdays and we were there on a Wednesday.

This historic mission state park is definitely worth a visit. We spent a couple of hours exploring the museum, mission grounds, chapel, barracks, historic hotel and Vallejo’s home, which included multiple rooms that are very well kept letting visitors visualize how life was like for his family. It definitely has a very interesting history, including history of how Alta California went from Mexican rule to California Republic briefly after the Bear Flag Revolt, to becoming part of the United States. Very educational; highly recommend.
The Sonoma plaza square is a nice place to take a break and have a picnic.

We opted not to go inside this mission during the very short time we had in Sonoma on our winery tour. It has an interesting history dating back to Mexican times.
Based on other revies, that was likely wise.

This 1823 Mission is the oldest building in downtown Sonoma and is operated by the California Parks Department. It costs $3.00 to enter.

It’s basically a self guided tour of a four room mission with a few artifacts. It’s interesting, but not overwhelming. We spent about 15 minutes there while visiting all the attractions around Sonoma Plaza.

Tip to save money: your $3.00 admission also gets you into the Vallejo home, which is about four blocks away. But you have to go on the same day. We found the Vallejo home much more interesting and worthy of an hour visit. Hot both places for a nice historic visit.

It was rather interesting to see what was left from one of the California missions. San Francisco Solano, the last California mission, was founded on July 4, 1823 and later rebuilt.

I can’t find a good reason to pay even a moderate entrance fee for an institution for which the primary goal was to convert Native Americans into devoted Christians and Spanish citizens. I have zero respect of proselytizing.

Unfortunately we were only able to see the exterior as the church was closed by the time we got to Sonoma. However, I have seen numerous other historic colonial Spanish Missions in California. This was the most north mission in colonial Spanish California. It was built to protect Spain's claim to California from the Russians coming south from Alaska. Per our guide it was also the last Spanish Mission before Mexican Independence. It was interesting to see the exterior and learn the history. Wish I could have gone in.
