We had a late Mother's Day visit. The blooms are lovely, the atmosphere delightful, the staff pleasant and helpful. Next year we will visit in mid to late April to tak advantage of the bulb based blooms with better timing.

Gorgeous gardens! I feel so privileged to have seen the roses in full bloom. The production garden was interesting - I had never seen artichokes growing on the plant. My 15-year-old is interested in horticulture and was fascinated. The bonsai garden is unparalleled.

I heard about Filoli from time to time, but it was always referred to as “Filoli Gardens” so I wasn’t interested in visiting. Wow… was I wrong! Sure, there’s a stunning 16-acre flower garden but there’s so much more.
Filoli is actually a 654 acre estate with a magnificent 56-room Georgian Revival mansion. This stunning property, now owned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation was built in 1917 for a wealthy San Francisco family and is described as “one of the finest remaining country estates of the 20th century”. It’s hard to believe that a gargantuan 54,000+ square foot house with 10 bedrooms and 15 bathrooms was once home to a family of only three people. Imagine the size of the staff it took to support their lifestyle!
I had a chance to visit Filoli when I was invited to a fundraiser. In addition to touring the opulent main house, I enjoyed strolling in the well maintained gardens and hiking through the rest of the property which is now a nature preserve. I also walked across Fault Creek Bridge which straddles the famous San Andreas Fault. They didn’t know very much about fault lines 100 years ago. If they had, I’ll bet they never would’ve built a brick house only 200 yards away from a major one… especially after escaping the great 1906 San Francisco earthquake.
Filoli is in Woodside just a couple of miles from I-280. Tickets to tour the house and grounds are $25 per person. Capacity is limited so reservations are required in advance. It takes a couple of hours to tour the property, so be prepared to do a lot of walking.
I highly recommend visiting Filoli if you live nearby. It could be an interesting place to take out-of-town guests when you’re looking for something other than the usual tourist attractions.

Forget the "special" holiday evenings at Filoli unless you want to pay $95 to look at lights--lovely as they are. No vouchers for a drink or a cookie were offered to attendees which came as a surprise to each of the three of us who went recently. In addition, there were no signs or personnel encouraging people to maintain distance from each other inside the mansion, not good during these Covid times. None of us will be attending the holiday evenings in the future

There is nothing quite like Filoli during the holidays. After a massive renovation, the estate is in full splendor as are the sprawling gardens. It is magical day or night and perfect for families -- I have been numerous times with a 4yo and 7yo. The food, hot chocolate, and adult beverages are exceptional. Tons of places to sit, wander and wonder. It is simply gorgeous and so much care and attention went into every last holiday detail your mind will be blown. Nigella did the Xmas trees in the estate and they outdid themselves. The gift shop is even fantastic for all sorts of unique gifts and one of a kind finds. We love Filoli. Just go.

I imagine the gardens are gorgeous in the Spring and Summer. Maybe in the early Fall. We visited the first week of November and many of the roses were dying, we saw no daffodils, we saw little fruit on the fruit trees. We saw few perennials.
I also imagine the gardens are gorgeous at night when the lights are turned on; many shrubs and trees look like they are wrapped with lights.
Didn't get to see the interior of the house since the power was out the day we visited.

First of all, the docents/volunteers(?) we encountered couldn't have been nicer. The self-guided tour is easy to do, and overall we enjoyed seeing how the other-half lived over a century ago. It was disappointing that none of the bedrooms were available, though. The grounds were particularly lovely even though it was fall and not a lot in bloom. We had a nice lunch at the cafe and sat outside to enjoy the scenery.

We thoroughly enjoyed the gardens. The variety of plants and flowers was impressive and the hidden nooks throughout provided surprises around every turn. That said, the house itself was a big disappointment. The exterior was quite impressive, but the interior was drab and felt like a sad peek into the life of a family that had fallen on hard times. Adding to the disappointment was the tour being confined to the main level. (I don't recall seeing that restriction anywhere on the website.) Had it been, we might have considered other options on our last day in the Bay area.

Fascinating experience! If you are an architectural professional or a history buff, this is a treat! If you know of any other sites like this please let me know. This is the equivalent of Downton Abbey in a short drive from San Francisco. The house is a statement on itself. Landscape is gorgeous and we spent about 3 hours walking around and would have stayed longer if we could. Will definitely go back next time I am in the Bay Area.

What has happend to FILOLI? It used to be gorgeous with every plant and bed in perfect condition. Now it is filled with weeds everywhere--in among the plants, crawling across the walkways, etc. The beauty is gone--now it is just a poorly tended garden. It needs immediate help--and lots of it!! Are there financial problems here??

What is the name of the yellow potted flowers growing at your entrance. They look like bright yellow popcorn.

Unfortunately I can't answer this question. I live in Washington State and it has been too long since I was there to know. Hopefully someone from Filoli or the area can answer this question for you.
Hi, I am taking the women in my family to outdoor summer tea and we were wondering how dressy it is? What should we wear? Or is there something we don't even know to ask about?

It's not dressy -- casual-plus. A nice summer dress would be perfect, no heels, perhaps a sunhat for a bit of drama. No jeans.
