Swimming is prohibited, but the trip is definitely worth it. The paths leading to the waterfall are very easily accessible, however I observed some people struggling to ascend the stairs after the falls. The trails get a little rougher after the waterfall, but they are still manageable.

The landscapes are beautiful, the walk presents slight difficulties, suitable for children, we took many photos, the only thing that was a little unpleasant was the smell of sulfur in some parts.
Recommendations:
Wear comfortable shoes and water.
Arrive early, there are restaurants exactly in front of the park to buy breakfast, ideally enter at the time they open the park as there are few people, you can take better photos and enjoy the walk more.
Wear waterproof, in case it's rainy day.

By far the most breathtaking waterfall! We bought the reservations online before going, we got there 20 minutes before and they made us wait so don’t rush. We did the whole trail without a guide. It’s clearly marked and only one trail so it’s hard to get lost.

I recently had the pleasure of experiencing the incredible adventures offered by Alex At The Beach Adventures in Costa Rica, and I must say, it was an unforgettable experience.
From the moment we arrived at Planet Hollywood in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, my friend, her daughter, and I knew we wanted to make the most of our time and explore the wonders of this beautiful country. After comparing prices and offerings between the hotel and other excursion groups, we quickly realized that Alex At The Beach Adventures stood out from the rest.
What impressed us the most was the "FULL" packages they offered, which included everything we needed for our excursions. Unlike the hotel, where additional costs were incurred for activities like white water rafting, Alex At The Beach Adventures provided a comprehensive package that was not only more affordable but also ensured we had a seamless and hassle-free experience.
For our second excursion, we opted for a private tour to Rio Celeste Tenorio Volcano National Park, and it turned out to be a great decision. We requested Alex again for our second trip, but unfortunately, Alex was unable to guide again due to illness, and he was careful not to want to get any travelers sick. Alex highly recommended Javier, and we were fortunate enough to have Javier Alvarado step in as our second guide. Let me tell you, he was absolutely amazing as well.
Javier's depth of knowledge about Costa Rica, his professionalism, and his genuine love for his country were evident throughout the tour. He made us feel welcome and appreciated as visitors, and his passion for being a Tica (Native to Costa Rica) was inspiring. The two hour transportation to and from our excursion was not only comfortable but also filled with fun surprises as he took us through charming little towns along the way.
The hike to Rio Celeste was challenging for me, but Javier made sure I was comfortable and safe throughout the entire journey. He walked with me, providing encouragement and support, while my friends enjoyed the hike with their own pace. Upon reaching the stunning cascading waterfall, we were in awe and captured beautiful pictures to cherish forever.
After the hike, Javier took us to swim in Rio Celeste, a truly breathtaking experience. The water's extraordinary color left us speechless, and we couldn't believe our eyes. We then indulged in fresh coconuts from local stands and enjoyed a delicious lunch at a restaurant whose name I regrettably forgot. The adventure continued as we ventured into the jungle to search for sloths and other fascinating wildlife. We were lucky enough to encounter a baby sloth up close, which was truly the highlight of our trip. We also stumbled upon a venomous frog with vibrant colors and even spotted an eyelash viper, one of the world's most dangerous snakes. The jungle walk was both amusing and exhilarating, filled with anticipation and the occasional encounter with fascinating spiders that we had never seen before.
On our way back, we were treated to a delightful sight of monkeys crossing the road on a bridge, adding a touch of fun to an already incredible day. Throughout the entire journey, Javier made us feel like close friends, and his presence made our trip exceptionally enjoyable and safe.
I must extend my gratitude to Carlos for his exceptional recommendations and expertise in selecting the perfect excursions for us. His honesty and patience were greatly appreciated, and every excursion he suggested exceeded our expectations. Thank you to the entire team at Alex At The Beach Adventures for providing us with first-class attention and demonstrating utmost professionalism. Alex and Javier, you both are truly amazing individuals, and we cannot thank you enough for making our trip to Costa Rica so incredibly fun and memorable.

Beautiful place. A bit of a hike but worth it. The view is incredible. As an advice, don't forget to pack a raincoat, and proper hiking shoes. Bug repellant might help.

Excursion within the Tenorio National Park.
The tour to Tenorio Volcano Park lasts around 4 hours, with a 6-kilometer round trip, where you can visit the waterfall, the dyeing pits, the viewpoint and the lagoon.
The weather is unusual; It can be hot but it can also rain and be a little cold, but when walking they stay warm.
At the Hotel Catarata Rio Celeste, we will end our day with a delicious typical lunch (Casado: Chicken, Beef or Fish) well deserved.
The tour to Tenorio Volcano Park lasts around 4 hours, with a 6-kilometer round trip, where you can visit the waterfall, the dyeing pits, the viewpoint and the lagoon.

The tour was fantastic. Waterfall was breath taking. Isaac and Manuel were terrific tour guides. They knew their stuff and they cared how you were doing on the hike. Even the driver Carlos did a fantastic job driving. I would highly recommend them. Thanks again for a great day!!!!

I have already been there in 2022 but now you MUST get entry tickets online. Once connected to their WiFi and their site, you must create an account to purchase tickets. But, it was impossible to create an account, the internet application was frozen. The guard at the entrance didn't want to know anything.
So we couldn't get in.
All this moving of 16 people for nothing. Unable to explain the problem to a manager.
In the end, the guard told us that the water was not blue but brown because of the rain.
Finally, the parking for cars is excessive because we paid 4 USD per car, without being able to enter the park.
If you want to see beautiful waterfalls, I recommend LA PAZ WATERFALL GARDEN, 1 hour north of San Jose!
So we couldn't get in.

This is highly reviewed so I’ll add a few tips
- Book tickets beforehand and arrive during your time slot; they didn’t let us in earlier
- There is a restaurant right in front of the admission office; unfortunately we didn’t enjoy the food there but were glad it had restrooms
- it’s a long hike if you want to see the waterfall and also the beginning of the “blue” river. They are in two different directions and on a hot day, doing both can take a good amount of time
- Our time slot was 1pm and we got out around 4:30pm because we took our time enjoying both hikes. We were among the last ones to leave as it was getting dark-ish .. so it got a little scary because we didn’t know if the place actually closed at 4pm and what that meant.
- Take plenty of water. The hikes are not difficult but there are plenty of steps and it can get tiring
- You cannot get in the water; we wore bathing suits but couldn’t swim anywhere
- The waterfall is breathtakingly blue in color
- If driving from Bijagua, Google maps showed us two routes, one going through the north and one heading south from Bijagua. The one the heads north can get a little scary if you don’t have a 4x4. We went quite a way and then turned around when the road got a little too unpaved for our comfort. The road that heads south from Bijagua is paved and our sedan preferred it ;)
- If swimming in a waterfall is your primary motive and you can only visit one waterfall, skip this one and go to La Fortuna

is there a place nearby the park where we can store luggage for 1 day (just for the afternoon).

There is a very small cafe adjacent to the park office at the entrance. Not sure if they would keep this for you. You might want to email the Tenorio Volcano National Park Office to see if staff would let you keep this in their booth where they sell tickets.

Would this be a suitable hike for children age 7 and 12?

I don't know the fitness level of your children but I don't see a problem. There are quite a lot of stairs but you don't need to go down as you can see the waterfall also from above. I recomend to go early in the morning because of the heat and there are also less people. Enjoy!
