So pretty the drive. The Black Canyon National Park area was gorgeous with Blue Mesa Reservoir gleaming in the sunshine. The rocky terrain beautiful with its browns and greens and little yellow colors here and there. The mountain tops had cool formations. I love this country with the different sceneries. This drove filled my heart with wonder and amazement. The bridge to cross the reservoir was cool. It looked so gorgeous sweeping around as we made our way to Gunnison from Montrose. No fishing from bridge. There’s no space to fish so I’m amazed people have to be told. The water glittered in the sun. A little low but beautiful nevertheless. This 205 mile drive which allows you to stop in Crested Butte, Gunnison, Montrose, Carbondale, Paonia, Marble and Redstone is beautiful. The landscape changes and is alternately green or brown. All of Colorado has to offer.

We traveled the Byway from Carbondale to Delta, and loved the mountains, waterfalls, rivers, animals (we saw a black bear), coke ovens and quaint towns.

Another fabulous scenic drive to see the fall colors of the aspen trees. We were only able to drive a portion of this byway (from Gunnison to Crested Butte to Carbondale) but we were able to see some of the Crystal Valley and drive Kebler Pass where we saw various shades of fall leaves. Being from the Houston area this was something that we rarely get to see.

Start in Glenwood, take the Redstone-Crystal River road, go over McClure Pass, turn left toward Crested Butte over Kebler Pass... It's a long day in the car, but it's unbeatable for scenery, vistas, and in the autumn, aspen gold. If the snow has gone, it's wonderful in late spring, too - wildflowers and green-gold aspen. Chances are, you'll see deer and eagles and... elves? The top of Kebler looks a lot like Lothlorian from LOTR, IMO. A gorgeous, gorgeous drive, ending in Gunnison.

The fall color along the West Elk Loop was spectacular last week but it's beautiful any time of the year.

We just went for a weekend visit to Crested Butte to see the wildflowers. We drove the West Elk Loop to get to Crested Butte. You must drive this route in late September to see the beautiful fall foliage.

This is definitely a drive you'll remember. True there are so very many scenic drives, valleys and vistas throughout Colorado and this is another one that is gorgeous. Blue skies above, clouds giving way to snow covered mountain peaks and elbow room to roam. As the songwriter Bill Barwick says ....and if God doesn't live in Colorado, he must spend most his time ..... A trip to remember.

We were travelling from Grand Junction to Aspen and had had enough of BORING I-70, so decided to take a route that included part of the West Elk Loop. It was a beautiful trip; the aspens were at peak, the road smooth, and traffic light. After spending the night in the cute little town of Basalt and driving to Aspen the next morning, we continued on over Independence Pass, passing Twin Lakes and Leadville. It's THE way to go if you're in the area!

There is only way to get to Crested Butte from Carbondale for the adventurous driver and that is the part of the West Elk Scenic Byway that runs along Hwy-133 south from Carbondale and then turn East on County Road 12 to follow a dirt road over the mountains into Crested Butte.
This route is the best way to experience the fall colors up close and at a much more relaxed pace than along the interstate or state highway. It was a perfect day of sun, fall warmth and mountain sides ablaze with the bright fall yellows of Aspens silhouteted by the dark greens of a million pine trees.
It can be easily driven by car and the faint-hearted. And there is something that takes hold of you as you leave the safety of a paved road and take the "dirt road less-traveled". Don't fear the drive as you will see others driving it, as well.
And at the end of the highway is the beautifully, quirky ski town of Crested Butte offering many shops and restaurants along Elk Avenue. Plenty of options for lunch or dinner. Try McGill's at 228 Elk Avenue for some breakfast or lunch.
You can't go wrong with a drive alive with falls colors and mountainscapes to beautiful Crested Butte.

Drove the West Elk Loop today (9/28) from Carbondale to Montrose. Between Carbondale & Hotchkiss, the route is literally ablaze with fall color -- just awesome.
