We hired Colorado Backcountry guides for three days mountain bike guiding in and around Crested Butte. Ben was a great guide for the three days. In fact, the best guide I've ever met either boarding or mountain biking over the last decade.
Ben does all the expected things well:
- the routes are great
- everything is planned and safety precautions are taken
- he works around your fitness and abilities
On top of this Ben couldn't have been more accommodating. He helped collect lost luggage from the airport, fixed bikes collected bikes from repair shops, offered advice on where to shop and eat. And then it keeps going as he got us tickets to a concert in town one night, shared riding technique tips and explained intimate details on the flora and fauna as well as geology of the areas we were cycling.
When I am next in Crested Butte I will be looking to engage Colorado Backcountry again!

When my friend and I arranged for Ben to be our guide for the Aspen to Crested Butte hike we envisioned someone who would lead us on the trail and make sure we didn't get lost - what we received was SO much more. Ben has a true passion for nature and teaching - and brought this to life on the trail. The time passed quickly because at every turn he was pointing out rocks, or geological formations, or flowers, etc and explaining how they came to be and why they were in this part of the world etc. It was like we enrolled in the best class for learning about nature/geology - and it happened to take place along the hike. But wait, it didn't stop there - Ben even took the time to explain how to hike correctly for different terrains! I have a toe that I broke years ago and usually starts throbbing after hiking for a few hours - thanks to Ben's suggestions I had zero pain for the entire 12 mile hike. While we left the trail with a great sense of personal accomplishment - we also had an even greater appreciation for the nature we witnessed along the way. What a gift it was to have Ben as our guide for this experience!

Ben is the most knowledgeable and talented guides with whom I’ve ever had the privilege of hiking. His wealth of knowledge ranging from the historical development of the mountain ranges to the geology to the flora to the medicinal qualities of all that surrounded us was astonishing. His genuine connection to the land and his devotion to preserving and understanding our natural surroundings was impressive. Beyond all of this, he took the time to teach us about basic elements of hiking that helped us to navigate the 12+ mile hike with relative ease. He was the perfect guide and companion for this spectacularly beautiful adventure. I hope to have and share more hikes/experiences with Ben and the rest of my family. He is one of a kind.

My husband is a professional photographer who made this trip just to photograph the wildflowers and the mountain beauty. I came along for the "ride". I must say firstly that the owners are wonderful people. Janae helped my husband get to the top of the mountain after two rained out attempts. Ben, Janae's husband and co-owner, finally on the third try took my husband up Washington Gulch and over Paradise Divide. Ben knew where to go for some beautiful flowers and mountain scenery. My husband came back very pleased with some great photos.

Bill is such an awesome guide! Before we even got out of the town of Crested Butte he was telling us of its coal mining history, its Irish and Slavic origins, and the towns ongoing history with local ranchers. Then up we went up the Slate River Valley with several stops for interpretive wildflower walks. My wife and I are very knowledgeable about wildflowers but Bill is so knowledgeable he introduced us to several flowers unknown to us. Then on to some exciting 4 wheeling over Paradise Divide at 11,000 feet and back in to town through Washington Gulch. We felt like we made a new friend with our guide Bill and we highly recommend Colorado Backcountry!

I just finished up a 4 day MTB tour in Crested Butte where Ben & Janae were our guides. Needless to say, they are top notch riders but they had great personalities to match. They gladly dropped back and rode with the slower climbers like myself to chat. We even had pizza over at their house after the 1st days ride and they took our bikes home and prepped them for the next days ride as well. I've never even heard of that before much less had it done for me. I can't recommend Ben & Janae enough if you need a guide in Crested Butte.
