Arrived at hydro street parking around 4 am. It was half full with vehicles trickling in. Trick to parking is don’t scan the tag, but simply text the number on the actual machine.
The trail is very well marked and in great shape. Please don’t confuse that with easy.
Based on a handful of YouTube videos, my expectation was the trail to start off challenging to the top of the incline then ease up to Barr Camp and continue with a slight grade to tree line before becoming very challenging. That wasn’t exactly what was encountered.
What ha happened…trail head to top of incline using the switchbacks was moderate plus in difficulty. Once at the top, the grade decreased greatly until about a mile from Barr Camp. At that point the grade increased and became rockier (go figure). We reached Barr in 3h 18m and took a 15 minute break.
The trail after camp continued to be rocky with a significant grade. My hips started resisting movement around 7.2. I pushed on a tenth at a time, but it became apparent the gradient increases ahead would not be manageable so I turned around. I never had any altitude issues or felt physical pain and am a low lander. We reached an elevation of 11500.
The trek back down was wearing simply due to my failure. That said, fatigue set in and was glad I had hiking sticks.
While there are some great views, it is really an endurance challenge.
I’m thirty days from being 56 and, despite being 40 lbs overweight, exercise moderately 3 days a week. Hope that gives you some guidance.

Why did we show up... and get no dinner. The managers had covid, yet they only alerted us once we were 10 minutes from camp! There was absolutely no interaction from the staff to atleast try to help us get food or a hot meal. We asked just for a pot, but instead they treated us like peasants and left us empty-handed. We had to ration our food and almost starved towards the end of the hike. In addition, we only had access to drenched firewood. It took us a whole hour to start a fire in the freezing cold cabin. Would not recommend or rely on in the future.

Clearly marked trail, no trouble navigating at all. We parked at the trailhead in Manitou & hiked up to Barr Camp the first day. We camped at Barr Camp.. which was amazing! Highly recommend! We hiked Barr Trail the next day up to the summit. Be prepared to get water from the streams on the way up, very cold fresh water but make sure you filter it! Bring lots of snacks. If you camp at Barr Camp there are minimal snacks for sale, option to buy their dinner on certain nights, and breakfast also avail. We hiked Barr Trail from camp to the summit and back down to camp in 1 day. Trail past the tree line has phenomenal views! Very rocky toward the top, take your time. Pikes Peak summit is a gorgeous view! The cog railway up there is also cool to see. Pikes Peak visitor center has a cafe & gift shop. The hike back down from the summit was a great experience! Would def recommend. Caution to those who have never endured long hours on your feet, carrying supplies long hours, used to high elevation. Take your time! It is a hands down unforgettable experience!

Perfect trail of choice for a good 4 hour hike! We used the Barr Trail to get to the top of Manitou Incline instead of taking the flight of stairs. Along the trail you can see the Garden of Gods and Pike Peak! It’s beautiful! Half way thru the trail you also have the option to cut thru to the stairs on Manitou Incline (if you change your mind). Highly recommend this trail if you are looking for an outdoor activity or a good workout! Parking is $10 at the trailhead!

This is the best local hike outside of Garden of the Gods, as there are less tourists and the view is incredible. Take crampons or microspikes with you, as well as walking poles if you hike in winter months; Snow and ice in spots today, but worth the venture!
Wear layers and bring some gloves as it's cold when you are not hiking in the sunshine. You or your friend may slip once or twice on ice, but you'll be alright. Still, this trail is worth the hike even if you only go for an hour or two. No one needs to hike 13 hours round trip to Pikes Peak and back to enjoy this trail. - Just get out there!
Park the car in Manitou and walk up to the trail head, or find the free parking with free bus from town up to the Cog Railway and walk from there to the trailhead. The Incline meets the Barr Trail up the side of the mountain about 3 miles, but doesn't need to be hiked in winter as the snow and ice make it hazardous for most folks. If you are a thrill seeker, take the Incline Trail with spikes on your shoes. Wonderful view either trail you hike. ENJOY

What I love about this trail is you can do a mile, or climb all the way to top of Pikes Peak to leave you breathless in more ways then one LOL.

One of our favorite trails to hike that isn’t far from Colorado Springs is Barr Trail. The entire trail stretches about 13 miles (about 21 kilometers) and has an elevation gain of close to 8,000 feet (about 2,400 meters). Because the trail starts at over 6,000 feet (about 1,800 meters) and finishes at the summit of Pikes Peak, which is 14,115 feet (about 4,300 meters), it is usually best to hike the trail in summer when temperatures are warmer. It is not uncommon for it to snow at the summit of Pikes Peak even during summer months. We have only hiked all of the way to the summit once, but we’ve partially hiked different lengths of the trail many times. These are some of the views that we saw during our hike that took us all of the way to the summit.

This trail leads from the bottom of the Incline, meets the Incline half way, and then again at the top. Half of us went up the trail to the top of the Incline, the other half took the Incline up and the Barr Trail down. BOTH are equally challenging! On the way down, we heard a waterfall, so we took a small side trail to follow the sound. There is a really cool stream running from the top of the mountain down and we continued to rock climb and wiggle our way through the brush to get some picture. Great trail! Great morning workout!

Loved my experience hiking Pikes Peak. Stayed at the Buffalo Lodge the night before and it was a great place to get some rest. We didn't make it to the parking lot so had to park in town which added over a mile to our hike. To do it all over again, I would uber to the beginning of the Barr Trail. I also would not have packed so much food in our day packs and would have more water. Met a lot of wonderful people on the trail who were fun and encouraging. Great experience!

Barr Trail is a beautiful route up America's Mountain. With 13+ miles of hiking and around 7,800 vertical feet of elevation gain, Barr Trail is a tough endeavor...but worth the effort. I highly suggest breaking up the hike with a stay at Barr Camp. The accommodations are great. The spaghetti dinner and pancake breakfast is AMAZING!
The Camp Hosts are the best. It can take up to a year to get a spot to stay. Register online as soon as you can!

Yes, they are but they have to be on a leash.
