The rich history of this ghost town is amazing. I could have spent all day there exploring the area but we were be doing the entire Alpine Loop. They do have two areas for bathroom stops. Bring a cooler and plan to walk uphill to see all 9 buildings. There are foundations that are remaining for the buildings that burnt down from a kitchen fire in the hotel. Be sure to study the map so you don't miss anything. I missed the jail. I will definitely go back one day. Rent a Jeep from Cliffhanger on the edge of Silverton and prepare for a 10 hour day doing the entire Alpine Loop!

DO NOT CARVE YOUR STUPID NAME INTO THE HOUSES/ WOOD!!!!!! Nobody and I mean nobody, cares if you were there. Stop ruining things! It is a beautiful little town. Stop vandalizing it! You people who do this are the reason nothing can be preserved and kept nice. Grow up.

We rented a UTV from Rock Pirates Backcountry Adventures in Silverton to drive up to Animas Forks. It was a really fun experience with beautiful scenery. The buildings are well-preserved and you can actually go inside most of them. Worth the time to make the drive, but would not recommend driving your own car unless it's a jeep or something similar.

Nicely preserved ghost town on the way to other jeep roads and mine ruins. The way up from Eureka is rockier than I remember but still doable in stock SUVs, though low-range helps coming back down. Best part was when a swarm of folks in their SxS, RZR, ATV, motorcycles, and other assorted UTV ran into the cabins to get out of the rain.

This was such an adventure. We drove from
Silverton and the drive takes about an hour. It’s pretty rocky so be prepared but SO WORTH IT! I took my sons who are 10 and 15 and they loved touring the old buildings and wading in the Animas River!

This is a great day trip if you are just seeing the sights and are not doing the whole "Jeep" thing. Most sources say that this can be reached via 2wd. Yes, it can but I'd only do it in a car you hate or maybe if you borrowed someone's without telling them. Even then, it would take some finesse. 4wd isn't necessarily needed but it sure makes a world of difference. The biggest issue is major portions of the road are comprised of fairly large, sharp rocks. I did it in a rental Ford Explorer with 4wd. (The rental company probably wouldn't approve). The 4wd worked great but I was really concerned about the tires taking a sidewall hit. They were just stock all-season tires. No way should a 2wd car, with it's low ground clearance attempt this road. A 2wd suv could make it with a competent driver taking it slow if it's dry. A stock, street 4wd is no issue but beware! Your donut spare isn't going to get you home from here!

Took our granddaughters to this place we have visited many times. They loved it!
They really enjoyed going in all the old historic buildings and learning about the mining history.

Second time here to this historic area. Lots of the original buildings still standing and accessible--this is one of the few areas that there is some preservation of history as opposed to just letting everything deteriorate and wash away. Also there are restrooms here!

We took Corkscrew Gulch in and went over Hurricane and California passes. This is strictly for 4x4 vehicles. It's slow going but worth it. Once one gets to Animas Forks, it's pretty amazing history. It's hard to imagine how this mining town would have survived in this desolate area. We then took the route out through Silverton. Although not needy of a 4x4, it was still a dusty road needy of slow going. The houses are very interesting to walk through.

Very cool old mining town is the reward for this 4x4 drive through high elevation. Beautiful views and really liked exploring this old settlement of the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Be sure to see the old Duncan home-it was quite the place. Must have been tough back in the day to keep food on the table, and survive the brutal winters up there....

We are in a standard SUV vehicle. Can we drive to Animus Forks in a two wheel drive vehicle?
Skrevet 12. oktober 2019
I would not recommend it. These roads are already becoming heavily damaged by very crowded FWD vehicle use, and 2WD vehicles do even more damage, because of slipping tires on steep sections. Save your vehicle and rent a Jeep.

We will be traveling from Durango to Silverton then to Ouray - We wanted to travel from Silverton to Animas Forks - How long will it takes us to Animas Forks from Silverton?

Is there airport shuttle service? and does it cost?
Skrevet 31. juli 2015
I agree with Wayne C. Animas Forks is a historical sight, a cluster of mining camp ruins, a place to park your 4-wheel drive vehicle and use the primitive restroom facilities. Your closest airports are Montrose, Durango and Telluride. Animas Forks is easiest accessed from Silverton.

We were planning to rent a mid size vehicle - do we have to a 4 wheel drive to reach Animas Forks? Are the buildings open in June?

Do you have to have a 4 wheel driver to visit Animas Forks?
Skrevet 8. februar 2015
Most of the vehicles we saw up there were SUVs of various types. We drove a Subaru Forrester up and we had no issues but we did take it very slow and careful because the road is pretty difficult. I wouldn't make the trip without having good clearance and 4 wheel drive. If you have that, it is a fun drive and the ghost town in cool.
