Rode out there yesterday (4 May 20) on my motorcycle. Picnic area closed, but the trails and parking loots were open. Hot, very dry (no surprise). Call it a remote site. I went in from the north (highway 160), and exited to the East, at Campo. Directions follow:
From 160 (about 20 miles from the 109/160 intersection, where the Hiway 160 make a left 90 degree turn to north, take Road W for 3 miles. Turn Right (south) onto Road 13. Continue for 12 miles on Rd 13. Turn left onto Road M. Stay on Rd M for 5 miles. Turn right onto Road 18. Stay on Rd 18 for 9 miles. Total distance from Rt 160 to Picture canyon is 26.9 miles. Took 5+55 from Colorado SPrings.
Departing via Campo (did not have the gas to go back to Rt 160 and then to gas in springfield) take Rd 18 north for Nine miles, turn Right (east) onto Road J, follow for six miles, intersect Rt 287/385 at Campo. Gas in Springfield, 22 miles north.

I saw a sign for the canyon and decided to check it out. There was no mileage on the first sign but subsequent signs included mileage. The road is fairly well maintained gravel. Once I got there the only place I could find to explore was the picnic area. As a solo hiker without a great sense of direction I decided to walk about 20 minutes in and then return. I was disappointed in the trail system because there were no trail guide pamphlets or trail markers for where one might find the petroglyphs or the homesteader cabins. However I did enjoy the blue skies, the refreshing breeze and sunshine and cows grazing.

Pros: Picture Canyon is picturesque. If you're reading a Louis L'Amour book you won't need to imagine the setting; it's in front of you! The picnic area is very nice, with a modern latrine restroom and adequate parking. There are miles of trails we sadly did not have enough time for. The southern canyon wall is littered with graffiti, some from the 1800's, some from native americans. Unfortunately we didn't find all of the petroglyphs and images mentioned in the signage. The trail is well distinguished and the park was clean.
Cons: We had no cell signal and only a crude map provided by the camp host at Black Mesa State Park so we almost didn't find it. Some more signs on the roads leading toward the park would have helped a TON! The main board with the trail map is faded to the point of being hard to read, and several features mentioned on signs in the picnic area are not noted on the map, so you have no idea where to go to find them.
We all wished we'd had more time and want to go back.
From Black Mesa State park take the gravel road north of the Dinosaur Quarry. Go North into Colorado. Turn right (E) at Rd 13 (red mailbox) take the first right (S) you'll see signs before you get to the first house.

Great place yet not real easy to figure out what is where there. The signs are faded and finding the sites is kind of hit or miss. We found the rock art and it was neat. We explored along the canyon walls but found we had to back track because of swampy places several times. The old homestead sites caused one to consider how soft our modern life is by comparison. One thing for sure the night sky there is a spiritual even in it's shear beauty. I had not seen the bands of the Milky Way like than in 30 years or so. If you are an urban person taking the kiddos to see the night sky there is worth the trip. It was very hot when we were there and it nearly drove us out of the area. However as we were the only folks there we slept on the picnic tables until evening cooked a meal and waited for the heavenly show. It was worth it.

This place has potential. On the plus side is a clean pit toilet and 3 solid picnic tables. The problem is overall neglect. A faded poster at the picnic site lists four trails:
-Arch Rock Trail, 4.2 miles
-Hiker Bypass Trail, ? miles
-Homestead Trail, 4.8 miles
-Outlaw Trail, 5.5 miles
But NONE of these trails are marked, no signs. You have to stumble around in wonder. Which way to go? We managed to discover a locked-down cave near an old homestead. We also managed to discover some graffiti and petroglyphs, hard to say what was what.
Beautiful canyon but not visitor friendly.

My review is specifically about something you can do only twice a year, on the Spring & Fall equinox. Crack Cave is a 25-mile dirt road drive from Springfield, CO to Picture Canyon followed by a 1.5 mile hike to get to the location where the sunrise enters the cave only twice a year and illmuninates believed Celtic & Native American writings inside. You have to make reservations in advance & the number of people is limited. You also have to be lucky enough for the weather to cooperate & let the sun shine at sunrise. We started our walk in total darkness to get there before sunrise so bring a flashlight. Even without the sunrise spectacle, the cave is worth seeing for a uniqueness not unlike Stonehenge and an ancient astronomical observatory. Nearby in this same canyon can be found Native American petroglyphs & pictographs, best pointed out by a guide.

Don't bypass this beautiful place. It is well worth the drive off the main drive. It is a real step back in time when Indians wintered. It also is a stopping point for pioneers on their way to California and from those on the Sante Fe Trail. It was also a great hideout for outlaws. There are many scenic vistas and unique rock formations to explore. You will need to take the hiking trail to really get up close to the rock formations. There is no drinking water available, but there are bathrooms. Use them before the hike.

It is amazing that a place with such intricate and spectacular rock formations is out here on the high plains. It is well worth the trip to see. Each little side canyon has something interesting to see. It was much more than I had expected.
The main negative is that the petroglyphs are heavily vandalized. There are probably more remote areas without the vandalization, but I did not see them.
The loop trails are very faint. It is easier just to forget about them and strike out cross country. If your sense of direction is good, it should be no problem. If not, I would take a topo map,

I just got back from 2 days at Picture Canyon. Is really is a beautiful area in Southern Colorado right near the Oklahoma border. The wildflowers are still blooming and makes for a really pretty hike. It is not a difficult hike for all of you hard core people but it is full of history. There are a couple short hikes or a longer 13 mile loop and horses are also allowed on the trails.
The petroglyphs are very neat to see but it breaks my heart about all the graffiti added to the sites. I hope to go back with the crack cave is open in the fall.
The parking area is also a place in which you can camp. I was surprised to have several other hikers camping near me on a Sunday night. It is a rather popular destination. There is one vault toilet and no water so pack plenty. There are fire grills for a camp fire or BBQ. You need to pack out your trash as well (leave no trace).
Due to the wet spring, plenty of mosquito repellent is also recommended.

Are all of the trails hiking trails or can you drive atvs or jeeps on them?
Skrevet 30. mai 2019
The trails are hiking, biking or horseback only. No atvs, utvs, or motorized vehicles.
