I had an extra day in Makassar at the end of a four-week-trip through Eastern Indonesia; as I'd been to the city before, I decided to go on a day trip to the Rammang Rammang area. Turned out to be a very good idea and a lot more interesting than I had expected - the area is stunning and there's actually quite a lot to see: caves (rather spectacular!), karst formations, lovely rural scenery and the village of Berua which can only be reached by boat and is set against a picture-perfect backdrop of palm trees and karst rocks.
Best of all though was the driver/guide I found for the day, Alex - he's mentioned in a few other reviews here as well, and I can hardly praise and recommend him enough. He's a thoroughly professional guide, approachable, service-minded and proactive in the best sense. Alex knows the area exceptionally well and has a lot of interesting things to say about it; his English is excellent. Plus, he's a very nice person and lovely company; the day I spent with him was very relaxed and enjoyable from beginning to end (also, he's very reliable and gave me a fair price; the tour was very good value). His contact is +6281344317277.

We came to Sulawesi end of September to visit Tana Toraja. Thanks to reviews here we found Alex as our driver. He suggested to start our trip at 5am and visit Rammang Rammang for the sunrise. It was such a grest idea! We had the whole place for ourself! Alex arranged a boat at 6am whitch was already waiting to bring us to the village.
The village and its sourranding is stunning! Specially so early in the morning. The light is perfect for the photo's. Alex knows everything about Rammang Rammang and showed us arround in about 2.5h. He is a very easy going person! Nothing is too much for him. His car is clean, he doesn't smoke or play loud musice while driving. He was as well our guide in Tana Toraja wat save us money on local guide there. Last but not the least his English is really good. Highly recommended!

Rammang Rammang village is the closest natural tourist attraction from Makassar city, travel time is approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. Here you can follow the river and see various brackish water plants such as mangroves, nipa etc. Go around Berua village visiting Padang Ammarung, a spring that comes out of it. mouth, pasaung site, ancient human paintings in cave niches and several other sites.
Visiting Rammang Rammang village is best in the morning or afternoon.
Entrance ticket per person Rp. 7000-Rp. 15,000/person. Boat rentals depend on the number of passengers.

This is a really beautiful place to visit. Ideal for a one day trip. We had just one day between flights and it was a perfect solution. Although it was rainy in Makasar The weather was just fine in the village. You can spend there around 2 hours walking between rice fields and enjoying the views. I must recommend our guide Alex who we also found in one of the comments below. He speaks English and knows the area very well. Also he did the tour for two of us with his car. We paid 700k for the trip plus entrance fees. That also includes pick up / drop off from a hotel. You can contact him on WhatsApp: +62 813 4431 7277

This is a beautiful piece of karst mountains on Sulawesi. The tour started with a boat trip along palm and mangrove forests. And then on foot on plank paths over the paddy fields and along the karst mountains. This was a fun tour.

My wife and I did a day trip from Makassar to Rammang Rammang village with Mr. Burhanuddin (+62 813 4251 3328). It was a fun experience: the 3ish km boat ride to get there combined with the lack of road access give one the impression that the place is fairly isolated (we were there on a Friday). A scenic mix of rice paddies and Buginese as well as Makasarese traditional houses set against the backdrop of karst mountains. Highly recommended a visit as well as Mr. Burhanuddin’s guiding services!

Rammang-Rammang Karst 2 days exclusion
This is a popular destination for people stop over at Makassar.
We started our trip at Rantepeo( Toraja) , it took around 5 hours drive to our first destination: Leang Surukang
Leang Surukang are caves by the field, it’s a bit difficult to find and seems abandoned for a while . Still , it’s interesting cause no tourists at all , you can easily take a lot of amazing photos.
After Leang Surukang, it took another 1.5 hours drive to Rammang2 .
From Rammang2 port, there’s small boat transfer us to the village ( 250,000 rp return per boat, not per head , it can be 200,000 rp per boat as far as I know)
There’re few guest houses around the port before the boat ride, but we chose to stay in the Berua village to catch both sunset and sunrise.
Boat trip is short ( 10 mins ) , but the jungle-like scene are good .
We stayed at KAMPUNG BERUA( BERUA VILLAGE) for one night. Accommodations in the village are limited and beyond basic.
The first one we didn’t choose was 250K per room with breakfast, shared toilets, tiny tiny room .
We stayed at an open space of a warung at the end of this village ( 100k per person included dinner and breakfast) . Even though it’s basic , just like camping in the wild , The host is such a warm and hospitable lady who made our stay memorable. She cooked us fish, served us tea/ coffee, and prepared mosquito net and carpet, fan for us to make sure we sleep well.
Alex( our guide and driver) took us to morning walk in the village, the view was spectacular and unique. We visited 2 caves , remember to bring a head lamp with you . ( entrance fee: 5,000 rp per head ) , we saw apes in the rice fields and heard many birds singing in the morning.
We left Rammang2 and took 0.5 hour drive to Leang- Leang ( entrance: 15,000 per head) . It’s more like a park with educational and research purposes. You can see the ancient hand prints in the caves.
Here’s the information of our itinerary:
Major Destination:
1.Rammang-Rammang Karst
2.Leang-Leang
(Included: stone forest)
3. Leang Surukang
( we didn’t go to the waterfall as we’ve already visited a lot of waterfalls before and the entrance fee is ridiculously high for foreigners 150k)
Expenses:
Boat Tour Rammang-Rammang ( 250k return)
Entrance Fee ( Rammang 15,000+ cave 5000 + Leang2 15,000)
Homestay 100K/per head
For those who’s travelling to Makassar , We highly recommend Alex . He is from Makassar , speaks fluent English, knows the local places very well , with his professional advice and experiences, we learned a lot about local culture.

I would to know if there is any chance to sleep in rammang rammang or close to it .
Thanks
Skrevet 17. september 2018
Hi..
1. You can stay with the local people in rammang2 area. They rent some huts and mats. I suggest you to stay one night there because the night sky's so beautiful. You can ask the villagers for staying in their houses as well.
2. You can stay not inside the area but outside area. There're some hostel or inn in Maros.
May help. Thx

What are the best ways to get there ?
Skrevet 20. februar 2018
If you have a car or you are going by taxi, then it is es-asy. Otherwise you need to take a bus who drives this way, jump off near the bridge and walk the last kilometer
Skrevet 21. februar 2018
Can anyone tell me how to get in touch with the eco lodge? TA says it doesn't provide quotes.
Skrevet 7. oktober 2017
Try this; maybe you can get in contact with Udhin dancy but not sure because he is often unavailable during his work on tours:
Call : (+62) 813 -4290- 533
SKype: Udhin.dancy
If you really want to go just go there outside weekends, it is pretty sure you will get accommodation. If you are not lucky you can always return to Makassar to get someplace to sleep.

I'm about to book with Cempaka travel, a private trip to Rammang- Rammong, then the Leang Leang caves, back to the old harbour, then Fort Rotterdam.
Cempaka Travel want to be paid all in advance, and have huge cancellation fees. Are they reputable and trustworthy (I have read a review that is very disappointing)? Or should we be travelling with another company?
We are on a cruise ship and only have about 7 hours in total.
Skrevet 15. august 2016
Try to contact Caraka Travelindo (you can googling first to see the company) and talk to Melly.
I have talked to other staff but Melly gave me better offer.
However, I am afraid 7 hours will not sufficient to cover all of those places you mentioned.
Rammang2 itself about 1-1,5 hours and I heard the road in Maros recently underwent some improvement and caused heavy traffic. However I am not updated with the situation there. Melly certainly knows better and can give you suggestion.
I hope you find this helpful.

The Cruise ship has a day tour to Bantimurung National Park but we have been told Rammang-Rammang is better. Is this correct and how far is it from ship terminal? Would it be difficult getting there independently as the Cruise does not have it mentioned on their day tour/ Thank you Wendie
Skrevet 24. april 2016
Bantimurung is more touristy and mass tourism than Ramang2.
I do not have idea where the cruise ship will be harbored
If it is in Makassar then it is quite far from Ramang2/Bantimurung.
