One of the most scenic drives I have been on!! It is a bit of a challenging drive in places, but so worth it. You will be at a very high elevation with no guard rails, so be prepared. Plenty of places to hike, play in the snow, sight see, and stop for the continental divide.

The drive is beautiful, with amazing scenery throughout. If hiking, you'll feel the elevation. Definitely worth a visit.

Great views yes, and fyi easier access from the Twin Lakes side because there are narrow areas on the Aspen side. But mostly I wanted to point out that there are some great hiking opportunities at 12-13000 ft right from the parking lot. A common route is out past the overlook (where most folks stop), about 4-4.5 miles roundtrip, but another much less travelled is across the road past the ponds, climbs to about 13400. Even better views!!

I suppose some drivers may find this road difficult, and for anyone the narrowest stretch isn't a place to drive fast. But overall, I thought the Million Dollar Highway through Silverton was more dangerous and difficult. I'm almost 69 years old and had no problem driving Independence Pass, but I am a long-time driver in mountain settings. If you have no experience with mountain driving, this is not the place to learn mountain driving. When I drove it, no vehicles over 30 feet long were allowed.

No where did we read an accurate description of this road. Granted it has unbelievable views and awe inspiring road but be sure you understand what you’re getting into before you attempt this road. You execute many switchbacks on a NARROW road without guard rails. There are places where it’s impossible for 2 vehicles to pass at the same time because rocks jut out into the road. It’s only marked “road narrows”. I should be marked “one way; yield to oncoming traffic. “. The yellow center line is not centered.. one lane is much narrower than the other.. not enough for an average vehicle. Be sure you trust your driver to drive and not try to look at the scenery! It will make your butt pucker!

We got lucky with beautiful weather in mid-October and made the drive up Independence Pass. Gorgeous!! The road is fine, but nowhere near in as good shape as Cottonwood Pass (that runs west out of Buena Vista). The road from Twin Lakes has many areas with no guard rails combined with very steep drop offs. I suppose that's what makes it fun for some... But the beautiful views would still be there with our without guardrails! There are paved paths at the top to walk out for great panaramic views. We had a late start on the pass (spent the morning at Turquoise Lake near Leadville), so didn't continue all the way to Aspen. Maybe next time!

We left Aspen heading to Twin Lakes. Independence Pass was full of beautiful views. We stopped at a 1800's mining "ghost town" along the pass. I hope to travel it again someday.

Beautiful drive! I wouldn’t be caught dead here with snowy roads though 🤣 road is curvy and straight up the mountain. No guardrails in some spots. Bring a jacket, it’s quite a bit colder at the top. We went all the way into aspen which was too fancy for our taste but still a nice trip

This is a MUST excursion! The drive is worth the views. There are places along the way where you can pull off the road to take in the beauty and take photos. We also enjoyed a cold beer in Apsen and milled around the town.

Google maps won't tell me the drive time from Twin Lakes down to the Aspen area on 82 right now since the highway is closed for winter right now. We plan on visiting the second week of June, so it appears to be scheduled to be open at that time. Any help on how long it would take us if we stayed in Twin Lakes to get to areas like Maroon Bells and the Grottos?

I would say give yourself about 1.5 - 2 hours between twin lakes and aspen proper.
