If you visit Vail during wintertime and don't ski (or want to take a break from skiing), the Mountain Mushers dog sled experience is a must. My wife and I are dog lovers but never had a dog sled experience before. What a thrilling ride it was! First, the dogs are magnificent - friendly, approachable, powerful and, yes, very fast. Second, the staff and mushers are equally tremendous - very friendly, knowledgeable, talkative, and polite. The sleds themselves are more comfortable than I expected and the ride is not too bumpy. Importantly, the team gives you more than enough time to meet ALL the dogs and take as many photos and videos as you like. And, of course, the scenery atop the mountain is spectacular and pristine. This is a first rate couple experience, but it is not limited to that. As with all things Vail, this is not an inexpensive excursion, but well worth the price in my opinion. Remember to dress warm (hat, gloves, and face covering) and you will truly have a wonderful and thrilling experience. Dog sledding was not on my bucket list, but should have been after this trip.

My husband and I really enjoyed our husky ride with Mountain Mushers. When we arrived the dogs were all so excited about heading off for a ride. There were 6 teams of about 10 dogs per sled. We had dressed warmly, and then our driver wrapped us up with a couple of wool blankets and a tarpaulin cover to keep us warm and dry.
Our driver was really friendly and gave us lots of information about the dogs. The dogs were great - friendly and all had different personalities.
The ride was fun - through lots of trees and there were nice views. At the half way point all the teams stopped for homemade pumpkin bread and hot chocolate. And a chance to interact with the dogs.
The pick up point for the trip is about 8 miles from Avon, at a carpark next to the I70. We looked into getting a taxi out there (Denise from Mountain Musher provided us with some contact numbers) and it was going to cost around $55-$60USD each way. There aren’t a lot of Uber drivers in the area and Denise said it can be hard to get a ride back to town. In the end we hired a car from Enterprise cars in Avon and this worked out to be a good option.

Highlight of our Vail trip. Highlight of my YEAR! I found myself laughing with pure, spontaneous delight as the beautiful dogs set off on the pristine trail. The views of the Aspen trees and the mountains were completely unspoiled- pure beauty as far as the eye could see, in every direction. The staff was warm, welcoming, and full of fascinating information about the area as well as the dogs and the dogsled experience. The dogs are obviously adored, and treated as pets. We were allowed to pet and love on them as much as we wanted when they weren’t working. This is a true family business- the owner is a musher, his wife makes the delicious homemade pumpkin bread they offer at the halfway point, and his son-in-law and daughter also work at Mountain Musher. Can’t wait to take my whole extended family. Excellent family fun for ages 2-102!

This was such an amazing experience. There were couples as well as families enjoying the day. It is obvious how these dogs are so loved. Would recommend this to anyone.

Prior to vacationing in Vail, we did some research on activities. Mountain Mushers was one of the experiences that came up during our search. As previous reviewers noted, we were picked up promptly by the Mountain Musher van to begin our trek. We were given a background of both the local area as well as the company itself which is still held by the founder, Wally and his wife. Wally's daughter and son-in-law are also a part of the pack as well as his grandchildren. The pack consists of ~86 dogs, some horses and a few chickens at this point. The whole crew and experience could not be more friendly and engaging. The dogs range in age from seniors to pups. All of them just want to play and love! They love to be petted and freely give kisses. The trail is about 2 miles with a break in the middle to grab some pumpkin bread with a cream cheese filling and hot chocolate. I was fortunate enough to have Wally as my guide in the lead sled. Towards the end of the trail, you can even jump on the back and drive! Overall, an A+ experience that is not to be missed. They do fill up quickly with long waiting lists. We were fortunate enough to be in Beaver Creek/Avon a week before the snow season really kicked off. We were able to book easily as they just started making runs a few days ago preparing for the high season.

My husband and I and two grandchildren aged 6&7 went dogsledding yesterday. They loved it and said it was better than Disneyworld where we were the week before.Wally the owner drove one sled and Sarah hid daughter drove one of the other sleds, there were 5 sleds in total that afternoon.it was obvious they both loved their jobs and their dogs, who seemed to be having the time of their lives. The grandchildren even had a chance to drive the sleds and couldn’t stop talking about it. A great family experience, not to be missed.

Recently my family (husband and 2 teenagers) took a half day tour with Mountain Musher. Van picked us up promptly at our condo at designated time. Driver was friendly and professional. He provided us with a wealth of information on surrounding areas and the dogs and sledding we were about to experience. Dogs were all friendly, happy and well taken care of... and they loved their "jobs"!! Before the ride and after, time is allowed to interact with the dogs and they LOVE all the attention!! The ride itself is mostly at a steady pace but also fast in places which adds to some real excitement. Our musher actually allowed us to "drive" the dogs from behind the sled which was also very fun. All mushers were again, professional and very friendly. Highly recommend this activity if you are anywhere close to Vail and well worth the cost. Also, good for all ages!!!
