It has been at least 25 years since we last visited this park which is a shame because it is a true gem. There is no entrance fee for CT residents and only costs $5 for out-of-state vehicles. We enjoyed walking around the ponds and trails with out dog as it appears many others do. The sole disappointment is the small covered bridge is currently closed. Next time, and there will be a next time in the not too distant future, we will bring a lunch and settle in at one of the many picnic tables.

This beautiful, underrated state park is well worth a visit! It's in a less-visited part of the state, which is unfortunate, because this park is superb. It's clean and well-maintained, with lakes, a swimming beach, a covered bridge, and plenty of paved trails for walking/hiking/biking. The old waterwheel was super cool! There are also opportunities for fishing, picnicking, and rock climbing.

I have lived in Connecticut all my life, but started exploring areas I had not been to after Covid hit, looking for some interesting ways to spend my time. Chatfield Hollow is a pretty, clean, well taken care of park with a number of interesting, picturesque features. Not being a “hiker,” I was unsure how much of the park I could see, but it turned out I walked all of the paved roadway and saw just about all the highlights. Many trees are wearing their fall colors which was particularly gorgeous with the bright blue sky. It was an easy amble, which could also be driven for those with mobility issues who still want a chance to spend time with nature. A good number of parking areas throughout, as well. The only downside is that the bathrooms are closed for the season, but port a potties were spotted in a number of areas. Another time, I expect to try some of the trails, but I think the paved walk was a great overview choice for a first visit!

One of Connecticut great state parks!! Ample and diverse trails for all, for any age and pets too. Lots of history too with Indian caves, buildings built during the great depression(WAAP) , a pretty cool covered bridge , pond and old waterwheel. You could walk the trails .paved ones as well which is the park road. Ample parking for all.

We had a great hike on our first every visit to this park. We started by the pond, climbing a steep wooded stairway on the red trail. The trail is hilly and rocky, and was muddy in some spots. You have to be a bit spry in some places. After seeing a beautiful ridge and having a great time, we eventually decided to turn around and go back. We got a little lost and somehow ended up on the white trail. I am glad we took a photo of the trail map before we started to we could figure out our way back. Overall I'd say it is a really great park and I hope to go back. BTW the bathrooms by the pond are closed and we didn't see any others.

My friend and I went to Chatfield Hollow in mid October. The leaves were not quite at peak but still a beautiful place to hike. We started with the boardwalk trail and then did the covered bridge trail. It's very helpful to print out the map on-line before you go and keep it with you to refer to. We attempted the Deep Woods Trail starting at the north end but when presented with the blue trail junction, we opted to take that. It is very rocky on the path and near the end, there are some steep sections, so I had to use a sturdy stick to help me. Before we left, we wanted to see the Indian Caves, which are at the beginning of the park near the ticket booth. Unfortunately there were a bunch of teens hanging out there smoking pot so we didn't bother exploring much. Other than that, this is a very clean park with a lot of things to see. There are also bathrooms in different spots as you hike. If you didn't want to hike on the side trails, you can also choose to walk on the paved road which runs from one end of the park to the other.

What more can you ask for when you visit this park? They have a field to frolic in, a pond to cool of in, a beach to soak up the sun in, a trail through the woods to capture your adventure side and so much more. They also have a Nature center, not sure of the hours, maybe its more like a nature classroom for kids, but cool. They do have bathrooms and handicapped ones too. They have those old timey changing buildings so you can change into your swimming trunks. I did see that they did some tree trimming but every good park does to let new growth grow. I can walk around this park forever, it's so serene. Wait until you park in front or drive down to the beach area and park, but just wait till you smell the pine trees.

This is a nice park to stroll in. One can usually walk the main paths in less than an hour. We have not yet ventured onto the hiking trails. The park also has a decent pond for swimming.

Chatfield Hollow has been one of our favorite walking destinations all rear round. On a visit today, we saw extensive tree removal. Not just thinning for forest health or removal of dead trees, but widespread logging of conifers and hardwoods, in many cases opening up big scars along the access roads and paths, with tons (literally) of wood chip residue just blown into the woods in big piles. Meanwhile, some natural deadfall in the marsh and lake remained. The entire walk was distressing. I love nature, but understand prudent forest management. Nonetheless, this tree work at CH has really damaged the feel of the park. I won't be back for a long time.

what parts of the park are the water wheel and covered bridge at?

The water wheel is at the very end of the paved road that starts at the entrance to the park on Route 80, and the covered bridge is on the left of the road just before the water wheel. Alternatively, you can go on a dirt road--Abner Lane Lane which skirts the back of the park and goes close to both of these sights.

I see the park is open all year but the gate is only open on weekends. Is there street parking? Are the bathrooms still open?

There are free parking lots in front of the gates--they are usually pretty empty except for the summer. There are portable toilets in a number of places throughout the park.

Yes there is grilling. There are some grills there on site. On Memorial Day I saw a dog there on a leash in the picnic area. I'm not sure if dogs are allowed in the beach area.
