This is simply a fantastic museum that has something for every art lover and historian. The cafe is pleasant, and the gift shop is better than most. Admission is free on Sundays. Parking is a little tricky, just be patient and follow the signs. The special exhibit by e. jean lanyon "The Magic Language" was especially good. Superb classics, great modern works, ethnic, this place just has it all.

Best Pre-Raphalite collection outside of England. BurnJones collection and excellent collection of American art with changing exhibitions. Great gift shop! Beautiful grounds to walk and tables outside for coffee, snacks, etc.

I've been coming here since I was a kid. Most recently I attended a reception for an exhibit for the Delaware Women's Hall of Fame and toured the Tiffany glass exhibit. This museum isn't a full day long excursion but it is a very pleasant way to pass a few hours on a rainy afternoon. They often have changing exhibits with a local Delaware focus as well as a solid permanant collection. Something nice to do on a sunny day with smaller kiddos that perhaps couldn't do the inside exhibits is the sculpture garden and the labrynth. The sculpture garden is just around the back of the museum building next to the parking area. If you follow the driveway further past the the parking lot you'll come upon the entrance to the labrynth on your left. In the past they've had free admission times (Thursday evenings or Sunday afternoons) so be sure to take advantage of those!

I love Pre-Raphaelite art and American illustration from the early 20th century, so the Delaware Art Museum is one that I've travelled to many times. Their collections in those two areas are the finest (without going to the UK for a Pre-Raphaelite collection.) The Howard Pyle collection is simply the best one could ever hope to find. Since the last time I was there, the curators have done much to address some essential questions about the limitations of the vision of the early 20th century American illustrators, and have added a correction to the vision of museum that needs a broad vision. The temporary exhibition I saw was excellent. Great museum and a must visit for everyone.

The museum is small (17 galleries, a few hundred works on display, 300 feet long, two exhibit levels) and can be perused in a few hours, but what it does, it does well: American art pre-Revolution to mid-20cen, Howard Pyle and other American illustrators 1850-1950, the Pre-Raphaelites (a mid-19cen British movement who rejected the British Royal Academy, espoused the style of the medieval period, and reacted to the industrial ugliness of the Victorian era; DelArt claims to have one of the largest collections outside Britain, courtesy of collector Samuel Bancroft (1840-1915)). The introductory text in each gallery provides social context, at the time and recent reinterpretations ("these portraits were aspirational," "these landscapes deleted Native Americans"). The physical space is airy and unencumbered.

Galleries 1 and 3 have the Pre-Raphaelites (lots of redheads), and G2 has multiple genres inspired by them (paintings, furniture, painted tiles, decorative housewares) and there's a guided interpretive tour. G10 (recent acquisitions) has Victorian bookbindery, Christmas cards, a version of "The Unicorn in Captivity" (the famous 16cen Flemish tapestry) rendered as a sea shell collage (Woodring 1965). G6 is arranged like a late-19cen Parisian Salon as organized by the French Royal Academy.

A small number of the pieces have QR codes for audio explanation, which tends to be personal reaction by the curator rather than purely informative (why the piece was made, how it was acquired, etc.). The sculpture collection (including the garden) is too small to illustrate any trends, and the meditation labyrinth (built in a former circular reservoir) needs refurbishment. Plenty of parking in the back, except for days with special events; then it spills onto Kentmere Parkway. Extensive gift shop.

Current status (August 2021): Renovation and re-installation, so four of the galleries, the south entrance, and the café are closed. The gift shop is open. Timed admission not required. Face masks not required if fully vaccinated. Paper maps and audio wands are available.

To save money: Admission is free on Sundays, and on Thursday evenings from April to December.

In the vicinity: Rockford Park, Brandywine Creek, Brandywine Park and Zoo, Hagley Museum (DuPont gunpowder mill), Nemours Estate.

Wait until thursdays after 4pm to tour this facility for free. There were only two levels of exhibits. The big draw of course was the chilluly glass. Modern and colonial art were part of various galleries. There is a sculpture garden outside along with an overpriced gift shop. I’m glad we didn’t pay regular admission-we were out of there within the hour.

I have been coming to this museum my whole life, and it keeps getting better! The permanent exhibitions alone are worth coming for, particularly the collection of Howard Pyle and Pre-Raphaelite paintings. The museum deserves frequent visits, however, in order to see the well-selected and thoughtfully-displayed rotating exhibitions. I was there most recently for a display of gilded age American artwork, many of which I have never seen or heard of.
For locals, the Delaware Art Museum has extensive community engagement, and offers classes for artists of all ages and levels of ability. For tourists, this is a Wilmington attraction that is not to be missed. It is compact enough that you can see most of the museum in a couple hours, still leaving time to see other nearby landmarks. The area surrounding the museum includes Rockford Park, Brandywine Park, and architecturally significant homes along Kentmere Parkway.
There is plenty of parking, a nice gift shop, and a snack bar.
