It was a very nice hike. Saw some gators in a pond on the path. Lots of birds. Some deer grazing near where we were walking. We were told about a part outside of the park but belonging to them 3 miles down the road so we went there and saw Bison right off the path. They had been laying on the path just prior to us getting there. Awesome walk

Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park is a quintessential inland preserve in north central Florida with diverse flora and fauna. The area changes with heavy rains, but features year round flat hiking (unless, of course, it's flooded). A stop by the visitor's center can help you plan your visit.
This is a birder's paradise with hundreds of species observable with the naked eye and even more so with binoculars. Horses and buffalo (yes) roam; however, luck has to be involved to see them (and have the right ground conditions).
If you want to see alligators, this is the place to come. Visitors are usually treated to dozens upon dozens of them, and depending on how far you make it on the La Chua Trail, you may find yourself too close for comfort. Visitors should give a wide birth to alligators along the sides of the trail. There is no reason to get too close for photos. Parents should keep their small children close. There are warning signs posted, and visitors should heed them. Alligator encounters are extremely rare and usually the result of someone getting too close.
A note on water levels. Typically, the preserve trails are walkable, but after heavy or protracted rains, trails may not be passable. (In fact, there have been times when the four lane road that goes through the preserve must reduce to two lanes because of water encroachment. No, the answer is not to build more walkways and bridges as this is a preserve that has been encroached upon plenty. The answer is to visit at a time when the preserve is not flooded.
Plan to spend 1-2 hours if you want to hike all the way to the observation tower. There is a per car entrance fee (It was $6 last we checked).

We tried to visit a park at least once a month, so we decided to visit this one . extremely disappointed, two of the observation towers could I’d be rich because of flooding. One of the big trails was close because of water. This can be resolve by building, either a Mount or a boardwalk for people to walk. Particularly there is an entry fee.

Saw 2 life list birds (617 & 618); Snail Kites feeding near the observation pull off on 441 and a Whooping Crane among a large flock of Sandhills seen from the tower near the visitor center. There are miles of hiking trails we didn’t have time to explore so we didn’t see the bison but I was more excited about the birds.

North entry seems to be the best spot. Old Florida, gators on the banks, then go to Micanopy for lunch/ice cream.

We have been here many times and enjoy the trails and wildlife viewing. Obviously, there are gators and more obviously, you should not feed them and give them plenty of space.

This is a very large place, and it is hard to visit. There is a visitor center but it was not well staffed when we were there. Will have to make another trip and figure out how to see it better.

A fun walk among the trees and then onto the prairie. A small observation tower is on the prairie that you can climb and have a look, perhaps bison or horses may be close enough the day you visit. before you go down to the prairie there is another observation tower to climb as well. All in all a nice little hike that is not strenuous.

This was a really long walk on a cold, windy day. There is a boardwalk over water off of Highway 441 that was nice on a warmer day with towers of American White Pelicans flying. We did not see any wild horses or bison here though.

Gorgeous. Worth the trip. We were able to see wild horses from the observation tower. The ranger in the visitors center was very knowledgeable. I would definitely suggest bring a pair of binoculars and a camera with a long distance lens for better viewing of the prairie.

I don't think we will have time to walk trails, can you see wildlife by driving through the park?

Which trail is the best for seeing bison and horses? I did the La Chua trail? With the boardwalk that was blocked and only saw birds.

With all of the water now, I am not sure, it used to be the Bolen Bluff trail on the far end of the Prairie on 441, but the last time we saw the horses they were on the East side of 441, If you start at Bouleware Springs park you may see them.

On which trail is one most likely to see alligators?

The La Chua Trail, the main way to the observation tower, is your best choice. But it will depend on how much water is on the prairie. Sometimes you don’t get very far because the gators are blocking the trail.
