My husband and I brought our bikes with us for this experience.. We got up early one morning and was out there by 7:30am to avoid the heat as much as possible. It was the perfect morning, showers in the distance that helped cool the ocean breeze and the cloud coverage was perfect to add to this enjoyable experience. We didn’t do Pigeon Key cause it wasn’t open yet but had a great time and would recommend to others :)

It is definitely worth driving over just to visually capture the beauty of the ocean. Some of the Keys house some pretty impressive homes and buildings. A really nice experience to have while traveling in the Keys.

Rented a bike from Captain Pips where we stayed and rodé over the old 7 a few mornings while we were there. It is a beautiful ride. A fun fact. Behind the new silver guard raíls are the original train track from the Flagler railroad. When the took up the track to make the original guard rails

This was the original bridge that first had trains on it, then cars that was closed in 80s when the new bridge opened. The first 2 miles to the north have been restored for pedestrians and bicycles to enjoy leading up to Pigeon Key. Then there is a gap and it is fenced off the remainder of the way as it sits alongside the newer bridge down to the next key.

Total mileage is just over 4 miles. We stopped on our way down to Key West to take a driving break. Make sure you stop and look for marine life as you go. We saw plenty of Tarpon, stingrays and a few sharks. Lots of pelicans flying overhead. Great walk in the middle of a long drive.

The bridge is a great place for walking/biking with beautiful views of the water. If lucky, you may see sharks, ray's , turtles or other sealife. There is very limited parking on the bridge.

Loved the 2 miles out to pigeon key. It was absolutely beautiful and a great ocean breeze. 4 miles total and it is smooth and easy to walk on!

We headed to this bridge to catch the morning sunrise. Ample parking when we arrived and it was still dark. Great views from on the bridge as you walk the 2 miles to Pigeon Cay. Note that Pigeon Cay is only open at certain hours and certainly not at sunrise - therefore no bathrooms. There are lots of other walkers, bikers, and joggers so you feel safe, even in the dark before the sun rises.

So much fun to ride bikes across this two-mile stretch of old railroad. Great view and nice to be out in the ocean air!

We had planned to bike but our hotel had limited bikes so we walked the bridge to Pigeon Key instead. We did not go onto the Key because we did not want to pay the $. It was windy so watch your hats! There were also bikers and the trolley and could get busy. If you need a bathroom walk under the bridge and follow the walkway to the Sunset Bar.

From Marathon traveling south just before the bridge there is a cut off on your right. Last year that cut off was closed so I do not know if it has been reopened.

Is the bridge open for visitors during Memorial Day weekend? What is the best way to get in and make the most of it?

No unfortunately it is still closed for construction and will be for many months yet. Now you can cross the seven mile and walk out on the old seven mile from that end. This is not as long of a walk and you can't reach Pigeon Key that way. However you can still see an amazing view, gorgeous sunsets and a lot of wildlife.

The bridge is supposed to open at the end of May 2017 for a short time and then the final repairs (which are estimated to take 1400 days) will begin in November 2017.

Im coming in December this year for Christmas is this a good time for spotting Dolphins. What is best time to come and view the sea life early in morn or late in evening etc I'm happy to fish for a bit with my family too. I read good tips go to toilet before you go and choose calm day etc

I would suggest that you check out the local party boats in the Keys - for fishing and they have bathrooms! Stop at the Chambers of Commerce for suggestions. There is one in Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon and Key West. As for dolphins, that is a little more unpredictable. Usually seen on the Gulf of Mexico side of the Keys and away from land - not inshore. If you are heading to the west coast of Florida (Naples or Ft. Myers, you can see them off of the beach there.

I have been to key west a dozen times & always have wanted to stop and check the 'old bridge' out.. do you just pull over and walk there? is there a specific place to park and pay and walk the old bridge? how does it work? either is fine, I just am curious how exactly to get to it from the 'new' bridge.
