Really should be free at this time of year.
So many paths are closed for maintenance. Even more today due to hedge cutting.
There should be notice on the website alerting us of this before we travel and pay to get in.
Disappointing to say the least.

Disappointing this time, the house is shut for works, many of the specialist gardens are closed off. Over all it was very over priced for a very short walk around the garden in the winter. The cafe was very nice.

We had a wonderful day at this iconic National treasure of Wales..the gardens are magnificent no wonder it draws so many people throughout the year.
I am horrified to learn there are no 3 huge solar farms in planning stage that will engulf this wonderful landmark.
Whilst we need energy do they need to change the landscape for such an area of outstanding beauty for 40 years.
As the burial chambers are also nearby you would think Wales would protect our heritage.

Awful hot chocolate tasted like water, went to complain, woman behind counter put one spoon of chocolate in it and said taste it, if its no good there's nothing I can do, it was still disgusting, said can I swap it for a latte, OK she swapped it, eventually, but no apology and she obviously didn't give a toss. Also still horrible takeaway cups and polystyrene plates, horrible. Staff in the cafe are terrible, house covered in scaffolding. Honestly don't bother

These gardens are beautifully kept, even in October. A very helpful map enabled us to see all the key elements of the garden. I was accompanying my elderly mum who uses a mobility walker and was given free entrance as an essential carer. The paths are flat, with smooth surfaces and therefore easy to negotiate with a walker / wheelchair/ mobility scooter - very much appreciated. The cafeteria was well laid out with a limited menu but very friendly staff. Would highly recommend the whole place.

Amazing grounds for families to walk around with stunning views to admire. My daughter loves it here. There’s cafe on site with indoor and outdoor seating. Huge carpark also. Would definitely return

Fabulous gardens, perfect for dogs and babies!
Dogs can go everywhere which is just fantastic all nt properties should do this. The gardens were largely accessible by push chair. And the toilets actually have changing facilities with a toilet. No idea why other nt properties don’t do this. I always think it’s very dangerous not to have this facility.
It was stunning and had lots of family games to play
The cafe was excellent with a massive choice and really friendly staff throughout
Thank you for a great visit!!

Great buggy tours- very informative! Stunning grounds!! One of the best National Trust gift shops I’ve been to, has a good mixture of products- the Lady working there was lovely. The cafe staff were very friendly and cheerful. It’s a shame the house isn’t accessible at the moment, but I believe important work is being done. Still get impressive view from the outside. Some of the staff were a bit awkward, but on a general over view nothing significant in that respect. Really worth a visit. Loved the outdoor seating areas under the umbrellas. Great selection of food in the cafe. I’d love to know what tea is sold as it was delicious. One thing that needs addressing as there seems to be a problem with a large amount of bees by the picnic area. Highly recommend

With so few properties in South Wale, National Trust really needs to invest more effort in those that are available to their paying membership. These gardens used to be and could still be wonderful given their architectural beauty. However the lazy or non existent planting, with vast areas clearly simply having been filled with quantities of seeds, coupled with huge areas of the gardens cordoned off and / or overrun with bindweed, along with the copious lame excuse notices everywhere that attempt to excuse their dreadful state of neglect, (they’ve been like this for some years now) really is a cop out and NT paying membership and other visitors who pay the pricey entrance fee deserve better. The restaurant is very poor indeed and way below the standard of other NT facilities. Only one of the two restaurants was open and in offering little more choice than a very limited supply of poorly made sandwiches and some Cornish pasties during peak lunchtime period really is not trying very hard. Tea and coffee served in paper cups with compulsory plastic lids and customers not even being given the opportunity to add their own milk to suit their taste is pretty poor. We ordered tea that turned out to be more like chicken soup there was that much milk added according to the taste of the young lady serving it.
The house is undergoing renovations due to water ingress and as such is closed to the public.
There were some nice activities for children and people appeared to be enjoying picnics on the mown grassed areas.
As the heading states. Come on National Trust you can do much better than this as is evidenced by the significantly better quality you offer within your English properties. Welsh members deserve better!

Well done Dyffryn Gardens. The children really loved the games challenges. Could you do this more often ? It made a huge difference having things like boules and badminton available. We had a great day. Thank you.

Is there a playground

Hi, yes we have two. One by the main entrance and another called the Log Stack in the arboretum. This is a huge wild play area and is more rustic than the one by the main entrance.

Can you walk to Dyffryn from St Nicholas?
NTDyffrynG
Cardiff, UK
Hi Clara,
You can walk down from St Nicholas Village to Dyffryn Gardens via Duffryn Lane. It's about 25 minutes to walk but it is a country lane with sharp bends in the road without much line of sight.
Please take care if you decide to walk as there will likely be oncoming traffic - there is more guidance for pedestrians on country lanes in the Highway Code.

do you have to pay to walk around the gardens without entry to the house?

Cardiff469 bidrag
Hello, yes you do have to pay, but if you enjoy wandering around beautiful gardens/houses it may be worth paying the annual price of around £96 for a family pass....which can be paid monthly. I find its worth every penny, as most National Trust properties cost £12 per person, so its the cheapest way...my husband and I used our passes over 12 times in the year so we saved a lot of money, plus it cost no extra to take our grandson(I think it allows up to 4 kids)

Hi the NT book mentions a stream- is it permissible to paddle in it? Thought I’d best ask before we visit!
cariad6
Bridgend, UK1 239 bidrag
Don’t believe it’s suitable for paddling to be honest, it’s very overgrown on sides & prob dangerous. Would think it’s low water levels during this weather too so dodgy. Hope this helps, but give them a call if in doubt.

Does the house have any trails for children, particularly under 5s?
Andy D
Cardiff, UK15 bidrag
I agree with a previous responder that Tredegar House is worth a visit and would add that St Lythans and Tinkinswood neolithic burial Chambers are both within easy "striking distance" of Dyffryn House if you're into that sort of thing. Although there is usually a trail of some sort for children, there isn't really much there and it won't occupy for more than half a day

Hi. Is it easy to walk round the gardens with a wheelchair?
Thanks

The short answer is yes. There are many flat footpaths but there are some sunken garden areas which wouldn't be wheel chair accessible.
