This has been the worst park we’ve ever been to. First the ranger gave our site to another guest. They switch up the last names. The site that was for the other guest they gave to us and it was too small for our 40ft trailer. Then once we hooked up everything (in the rain) and we were about to relax. The power kept tripping. We couldn’t even have the AC on. In Florida during June you need ac. We had our 18 month old with us and our two dogs. Very disappointed. If any site is having electrical issues they should not allow reservations.

This is such a beautiful location. We saw tons of wildlife, including wild horses. There is not a lot of shade, and be sure to bring water.

This is a medium sized Campground - 50 sites with spots for RVs, and tents. The large RV sites are mostly level with convenient hookups that functioned properly. The fairly private sites are what once was gravel - now dirt (I suspect muddy if it is raining) off asphalt access roads. The campground is heavily treed, so not much access for satellite reception, a couple of OTA stations, and good Verizon cell service. The bathrooms are older, but well maintained and clean with lots of hot water and decent water pressure. The park is a delight and the Prairie is unique. I recommend going to the Visitor Center to watch the video - they also have an interesting array of exhibits. I also recommend the short walk to the Observation Tower - we saw Bison, and Horses (bring binoculars) as well as many birds.

It's okay. Nominal entrance fee. Not much in the visitor center. There are lots of free parks in florida with the same wildlife (minus horses/bison) and flora and fauna. Went up the lookout tower and saw what might be horses but were dark specks without binoculars. Definitely won't be back.

We visited for five days in our motorhome. The camp sites are roomy and flat. Well maintained restrooms. Any size unit could fit. We hiked La Chua Trail and saw the snail kites, anhingas, limpkins and of course many alligators. I’m fortunately water covers the trail after the long boardwalk but it was still worth it. Another day we hiked Bollen Bluff Trail and had to end the hike when we met a heard of Buffalo grazing right in the middle. There is a small visitor center to visit and several trails take off from there. Wacahoota Trail is a short trail to a tower that over looks grass lands. Out grazing on the grass we’re three wild horses. What an amazing week for us. There are 10 trails of varying lengths. Good for any one even some that are paved for handicapped access. .

When we traveled to Payne's Prairie for a quick weekend getaway we didn't know fully what to expect but as we entered the park and saw the unspoiled look of it all we knew we were in the right place! The guard at the gate was very nice and getting through took no time at all. On the way back to the campgrounds we saw 3 deer. One was just eating right beside the road and when she figured out we meant her no harm she kept eating!

The camp sites are off the road a little but each parking lot has a sign stating which sites they are for. After parking, head down one of the little trails and you will be able to identify your camp site by the post at each one that has a hook for hanging trash/food and the number affixed to it. The campsites are well laid out with most having some seclusion from the others by trees and brush. There is a picnic table and a fire pit at each area with plenty of space for 2 tents.

Approximately every 3 sites has a water faucet and power outlet tower. I noticed that some campers brought power cords and had them running to their tents. There is nowhere to put you dishes as you wash them so I would recommend bringing a bucket so you don't have to walk back and forth to your camp.

To get around to the parking and bathroom facilities just follow the well trodden trail and you will find your way. A word of warning, you must have a headlight or flashlight for night time excursions. There are no lights at night. I personally love this fact as I would rather see the stars and enjoy my fire!

The bathrooms are extremely clean and have handicap accessibility. I noticed that there was even a shower chair for visitors to use. There are also power outlets if you need to dry you hair etc.

The visitors center is a bit down the road from the campground. I recommend driving so that you can have more time hiking the trails. You also really should go into the visitors center. It is really well done and the rangers are nice. It also has the observation tower which is a very short hike away that lets you see out over the prairie.

There are 8 trails listed on the map they give you at the gate plus the one at the visitors center. Not all of the trails are in the preserve the Ecopassage boardwalk and the Bolen Bluff trail are both down 441. The Gainsville-Hawthorne trail is long and has multiple trailheads. I didn't bring a bike so I didn't do that one.

I love this park and can't wait to return as it is now one of my favorites. If you are thinking of going remember your deep woods off and if you have kids don't let them stray. This is truly a wild park with alligators etc!

This is a large park with some nice hiking trails. The trails are mostly well marked. We saw several horses and a herd of bison on the trail.

The bison seem like a unique sight for central Florida. And what seems essentially like a dry lake bed is well worth a view. But this did not compare to other inland parks we visited in Florida recently, like Myakka and Corkscrew further south.
