Some trails are more used by horses so the walking is a bit sandy, but over all very nice hikes; a direct hike to the lake and back (using mostly yellow and orange trails) is only about 7 miles. A large picnic table awaits visitors at the lake. Quiet and peaceful

Well, one thing’s for sure, you can’t trust the address to get you to the trailhead for horseback riding. Today was our first time out to Barr Hammock and we ended up (all 5 rigs) at the hiking trail off the most God-aweful Wacahootta Road (barely wide enough for two vehicles to pass much less hauling horses). Once we figured out that from there we needed to cross I 75 and head south on 441 to right on 234 towards Micanopy then back under I 75 to the trailhead to the west, we made it. If you try to call the number referenced on their website, good luck. Once you get there it’s nice.

Great hiking trails and lots of beautiful oak and pine trees. The trails were easy to follow. You could walk, bike or ride your horse on certain trails . All the trails are nicely maintained.

We had an incredible hike here. The trail was well maintained and wide. We seen an alligator nest of hatched eggs, a multiple of butterflies, and a snake. We did hear a loud splash and assume it was a gator but did not investigate to confirm! This preserve is secluded, quiet, and peaceful. There is a shaded area and a sunnier area which you can choose to hike on. Overall, an incredible find for a peaceful hike.

We have been to the Northern Entrance of Barr Hammock, but this review is about the Southern Entrance, at 300 SE 175th Ave, Micanopy, FL. This is a new part of the park, with new, well-developed trails. Bikes, hikers, and horses are welcome. Trails are shared in different combinations. There is a color-coded trail map, located at the kiosk, in a handy wooden box. The trail map can get a little complicated with who is allowed on which trail, but the trails are very, very well marked, so be at ease. The trails are nice and wide, and well-kept so far. Most are shady. We rode our bikes and the bike trails were great. We went all the way out to the prairie view at the far end of the Orange Triangle trail, were there is a covered picnic table, which would be about 8 or 9 miles round trip. We saw some very healthy deer. It was a good time, with excellent trails, exactly what we wanted, all expectations exceeded. Recommended you have plenty of water with you. Also, restroom-wise, there was only a porta-potty.

Levy Loop is the northern preserve. There are three main trails in the southern preserve (equestrian, bicycle, hiking). There a no sweeping prairie views. But, the hike offers a lot of shade and is a great nature walk.

This trail close to I-95 is relatively new so not too many people know about it. When I walked it recently, I think I was the only person out on the trail. One side of the 6 mile circular trail is sunny and the other tree shaded. Stay aware of alligators and be prepared to walk back the way you came if a gator closes to sun on the path. I saw lots of wading birds, including 4 to 5 endangered woodstorks.

Barr Hammock Preserve offers a 6.8 mile loop for hiking in the heart of the Levy Prairie. If you ever doubt that most of central Florida is swampy prairie lands, just visit Barr Hammock for a reminder. But don't think swamp means that it isn't absolutely beautiful. The trees overarch on portions of the path, birds fly overhead, gators lounge in pools formed naturally at the bases of trees... there is plenty here to see for nature lovers. There are portions of the trail that are not shaded, so wear sunscreen and bring a hat.
