Such a beautiful place and surroundings. Very interesting museum. Lovely cafe and food. Great walks up to Selborne Hanger.

Wonderful walking up the zig zag. A path that zig zags up a hill. At the top you can walk along the hanger. The zig zag has a bench half way and at top with beautiful views. Car park behind pub with toilets.

A small museum/house dedicated primarily to Gilbert White, author of The Natural History of Selborne, one of the most published books in the English language.
This 18th century book is said to be the foundation of modern Naturalism and ecology.
A beautiful quintessentially English village setting in the South Downs with 30 acres of gardens.
It also houses the Oates Collection with film and memorabilia of Scott’s ill fated polar expedition.

Nice cafe/ restaurant with a decent choice of breakfast and lunch items and home made cakes/scones etc. I went on Sunday and Sunday lunches ( lamb shank or liver and bacon casserole) were excellent. (There was some kind of veggie alternative too)

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit as there were displays of Scot and the Antartic and other items to keep you absorbed. We could not explore the outside as much as we would have like as the weather was very damp but will probably return as they give you a whole year to return for free.

Easy car parking behind The Selborne Arms. Busy at February school half term. Muddy. Step incline. Perfect for dogs. A destination rural retreat. Had a meal afterwards at The Selborne Arms (adjacent to car park), Meal & service there was very good.

We parked in the ample car park and set off down the trail towards the zig-zag steps leading up to the top of the hill, overlooking Selborne. These steps were originally built by Gilbert White and it’s amazing they are still accessible.

The path is a little overgrown and the steps are quite challenging, but the spectacular views from the top are well worth the effort. You can see right across the valley below. There are a couple of seats to break your climb, and we sat and got our breath back and admired the wonderful panorama in front of us. A large chinook passed overhead as we sat relaxing, the only thing to break the silence.

At the top the ground levels out and there is a wooded area with a pathway through the trees. We walked right along the ridge and then took the lower route back, which although it was a little muddy, brought us more quickly to the bottom of the hill, avoiding the steps.

It’s a wonderful walk in the sunshine, but be prepared for some steep climbing.

Just on the off chance we decided to visit Gilbert WHITE's house after an absence of several years. We are so glad we went as it turned out to be a lovely day and as ever, a wonderful tranquil place to visit well away from the Hussle and bustle of the noisy city. There was by chance an event - the opening of a new greenhouse, plus a guided tour and some entertainment - all for free including the parking ably assisted by the local boy scout troop raising funds following a theft of some equipment. It was good tp see children playing in the meadows running their hands through the tall grass and buttercups & others just chilling out lying in the vast expanse of meadows. Plenty of places to just and relax or wander amount the lovely gardens started by White in the 18th century - including herbs and veg. The house is well worth a wander around and pause to remember the OATES family - it was Captain OATES who gave his life for others during the fateful SCOTT expedition. No noise to spoil things just the breeze in the trees that surround this lovely place. Bring a good book and a picnic or lie in the meadows enjoying the birds including the kestrels who live in a huge tree within sight of the house. Very well done to those who run this lovely place. Will always want to return.

I have worked in the area about three times a year for the past 5 years & always look forward to taking my charges (2 black labs) up the zig zag steps, I like to go early as it is a popular walk & I like being alone, just love the steps they are not too difficult at all. To think they have survived the years is testament to the Trust. Every season is different the views on top are stunning at the moment the rape fields are glorious. From the top you then have access to selbourne common & all its wonderful walks.
Well worth a visit if in the area . On your return there is a pub or tea rooms to rest in & take your choice of drinks & food

Our 8 mile hike started behind the pub. Though fairly muddy we enjoyed a good hike within the National Trust area.
An overcast day but striding out amidst old woods for 6 1/2 miles gave us an appetite for lunch in the pub in Selbourne. Another 1 1/2 miles and hike completed.
