It is a bit dated. Needs a refurbish. The temporary exhibit about ponk rock was very uninteresting to us. The area is full of bums so be careful as the sun goes down the cardboard boxes come out.

Every great city has a museum that documents the story of the community and the people who built it. Orlando, Florida, is no exception. In fact, the Orange County Regional History Center makes learning about the history of Central Florida fun for one and all. Upon entering the spacious lobby in the five-story neoclassical revival building that once served as the Orange County Courthouse and dates to 1927, a visitor finds himself or herself gazing upward as Florida wildlife, artifacts and other memorabilia representing 12,000 years of Florida history are suspended from the ceiling like the Spirit of St. Louis at the Smithsonian in Washington DC. Located at 65 East Central Boulevard in downtown Orlando, at Magnolia and Central, the museum opened at its current address after moving from Orlando's Loch Haven Park. Parking is available in the Library Parking Garage at 112 East Central, across from the Orlando Public Library. The museum houses 35,000 artifacts, from objects to archives and photographs to born digital media. The collection spans more than 14,000 years of history across seven counties, including Brevard, Lake, Orange, Osceola, Polk, Seminole and Volusia. Open from 10 to 5 Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 on Sunday, the museum offers a self-guided audio tour free of charge with the $7 admission fee. What's to see? Among the exhibits are African American history; Cattle and Citrus; Aviation, featuring a replica of a World War II B-17 and Orlando-born astronaut Jake Young's trip into space; Destination Florida, which explains 100 years of transition from the Dixie Highway to the Wigwam Hotel; First Contact, documenting how the Spanish, the first Europeans to land in Florida, influenced the lives of Native Americans and helped shape the state; First People, explaining how Florida's indigenous peoples lived for thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans in the 16th century; The Theme Park era, which follows the area's fascinating transition from a mostly agricultural country to a rapidly expanding tourist-centric economy after the opening of Walt Disney World in 1971; Pioneer Cabin, allowing visitors to imagine living in a primitive household in Florida in the 19th century; and Natural Environment, which gives visitors an opportunity to discover the area's unique flora, fauna and geography and learn how Winter Park's famous sinkhole swallowed up a city block. This and much more on display in one of the most well documented regional history museums we've ever encountered.

We visited the Orlando/Central Florida History Center on Magnolia Street in Orlando. It's an old courthouse that has been converted to a history center. The Upper floors detail the earliest days of Florida and the Spanish occupation in the 1500's. The exhibits highlight the orange growing business and lead up to 1971 with the opening of Disneyworld. A separate exhibit highlights the underground and punk rock movements in Orlando starting in the 1970's. Entrance fee is $7 with 2 hours free parking in the adjacent Public Library garage.

Every city of Orlando’s size needs a museum like this to tell its origin story. The problem seems to be that they don’t have enough space to do the job. There are 6 exhibition halls on three floors of the old County courthouse. Two focus on pre-European history, one on the period from 1820-1950 or so, one on history since 1950, including Disney and NASA, one on civil rights and the final hall is used for rotating exhibits, currently 1990 indie music. One hall is a partially reconstructed courtroom. Although the building looks very wide from the outside it is not particularly deep which probablylimits the available display space.

What’s presented is well organized but it leaves the visitor wanting to know more and this curiosity cannot be satisfied by the minimal gift shop. Allow 1-2 hours but prepare to be use the internet to fill out the story.

I visited the History Center recently and really enjoyed it. It is located in the midst of downtown Orlando and it tells the story of Central Florida. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The museum was well-maintained. The exhibits start chronologically on the top floor (4th) and proceed down the floors. The displays and artifacts tell the story of Central Florida through the centuries. Topics include indigenous peoples, Spanish settlement, English settlement, environment, agriculture (especially citrus), aviation and space travel, theme parks (especially Disney), and the music scene in Orlando. Parking is available in the parking garages nearby. I parked in the library garage. If you park for less that two hours the museum can validate your parking for the library garage. The admission was very reasonable and I found this to be a fascinating place. It is not the kind of attraction those looking for thrill rides will find interesting, but if you like a good museum this is a very good choice.

Seeing the history of Florida from very early years thru current time. Interesting to learn about the boom times brought by the railroad, then the space industry and then Disney. 2 floors dedicated to this section. Older children/ teens interested in history may like, but requires a lot of reading to learn and appreciate the museum offerings. Some special exhibits also there that turn over after a number of weeks. One exhibit is from African American history.

This is a gem and definitely worth a visit. It’s so packed with so much information spread over four floors that we weren’t able to see it all in the two hours we had to see it. Every display was museum quality. The museum is a Smithsonian affiliate. The day we visited to see one on loan. It was all about mythical creatures, giants, dragons and unicorns. Excellent! It’s a must visit.

I’ve lived in Orlando for almost 50 years and never knew about this place. There are several floors of great Orlando history from the orange groves to Walt Disney World. I loved learning a few new pieces about Orlando. Go for a could of hour and then enjoy a walk around Lake Eola.

We had some time to kill between a medical appointment and picking someone up at the airport. So, we visited this museum and I am glad we did. It was well done an interesting. it started with the indigenous people of the area and progressed through time. I learned a lot there in a relatively short amount of time. Highly recommended.

The Ocoee Massacre exhibit is very well done. We are so glad we chose to visit. So many things to learn about an area we thought we knew well. Quite painful to be confronted by such hatred and bigotry from your own ancestors. I feel if more people visited and acknowledged the changes we still need to make, we would live in a better country.
