A late decision to stop here and so glad we did. Time your visit to arrive 20mins before the free ferry across to the Fort. We had brought our own picnic lunch. The Rangers were very informative (Caroline took us across and shared all her knowledge). My son did the Journey Ranger activity to earn his badges… so much fun! Full of history and well worth the donation entry

This is a perfect activity for families visitng St.Augustine. The boat ride over to the fort is very short, just about 5 to 10 minutes. My kids absolutely loved checking out the fort, the boat ride and the canons! Our park ranger Caroline was very informative and friendly as well as the boat captain.
You get to spend the perfect amount of time on Rattlesnake Island before returning to the shore. About 20 to 30 minutes.
A must do for those interested in history or for large families. Make sure to get here early to grab a free pass over to the fort.

Love going here for a date. The tour is animated, the boat ride is romantic, and the cost is free. A personal favorite part is the birds swooping down into the river and the wild turkey that wanders around. I also like remembering that St. Aug has a French history, too. Check out the canon shots on Saturdays.

This fort is a great compliment to the one in st Augustine. You take a boat ride to the actual fort but that only takes 4 minutes.
Our ranger - Caroline - was very knowledgeable and gave a great talk answering any question given to her.

Fun and educational! We really enjoyed the boat ride to the fort, saw a sea turtle in the water near the beach when we returned, and loved walking the trail. A really fun morning.

Go early. Parking is limited. We arrived before the oprning and found a spot. Went to the visitor center first to get boarding paases for the boat ride to the Fort. Rangers are terrific. We h ad Ranger Caroline, who guided us around the Fort and explained the history.

Well, this was a stop my spouse wanted to take and there were no preparations so we didn't get to do much. I knew nothing about this place and my spouse visited years ago in college (when we were coming out of the stone age). There is a ferry but we just missed the 11:30 one and the next one wasn't until 1:30. We probably would have made the ferry but we spent a lot of time waiting for a parking spot. I would say they definitely should think about having a second lot.
We walked down to the water where the NPS guide said was the best view and took some pictures. It also wasn't the best of weather, it looked like it could rain, which later on it did. We left and spent time looking at the beaches of St. Augustine and driving up A1A which was pretty.

This is a small unit of the NPS. They open at 9am & I was a little shocked to see a line of cars waiting to get into the parking lot!
This was on a Wed. in April.
Apparently people get there early to get tickets for the free ferry to the fort. I guess they go like hot cakes, so if it's a weekend I would suggest going as early as possible to avoid disappointment.
The ferry runs every hour, but check the website. Our boat was the first of the day & it was full. There were a lot of people waiting for us to get back.
The boat ride is very short - maybe 10 minutes max. The fort is small, but interesting. A ranger goes with you to interpret, but you can explore on your own. You get about 25 minutes before it's time to go back.
The visitor center is VERY small. I was told there was a film, but it was on a loop with no sound. There's no admission to get in.
There are bathrooms.
There's a couple of trails. We took the canopy trail, which is a loop with boardwalk & packed dirt. Not too long, under a mile. The canopy was interesting.

This can't be beat. It's a federal site and free. Every 30 min there's ferry service to the fort led by the National park service. It fills up quickly so get there early. Well worth it

The actual fort is not on the barrier island and you need to take an NPS boat to get to the fort. Unfortunately visited on a day when the boat wasn't running. Still the displays in the visitors center gave a good idea about the fort and its history. Also pleasant to walk around the grounds.

This may be a dumb question, but are pets allowed? I have an ESA (canine) that is under 15 lbs, is quiet, and can be in a bag/carrier the entire time.

From the park's website (Plan Your Visit tab on the left...Basic Information pull down menu...Pets pull down menu) yes, they are. However, you will be required to climb a stair case to access the first and second levels and a ladder to access the third level (roof).

Not a question....but a clarification. It seems many are confused by Fort Matanzas and Fort Castillo de San Marcos.
Matanzas is a tiny fort - only housed 7 men. It is run by the National Parks and free to get into. You take a short ferry boat ride to it. It now in a more remote part of St. Augustine.
Castillo de Dan Marcos is right on the waters edge in the heart of old St Augustine. It is much larger and has a fee to get in to. There are several pics of it incorrectly posted here.
Both are great to visit though!
