This place is horrific. The minute you pull up into the parking lot, the smell of urine and feces is overwhelming. There was a mamma goat who just gave birth (fresh blood all over her behind) that morning already put in a pen for display in her the petting area. The smell of the aviary was awful and unbearable. The turtles were covered in feces from their pen not being cleaned appropriately.

The shows were shocking. The woman handler of the bird show kept calling the birds brats and wise guys. She would get agitated with them and would seriously threaten them.

The owner’s son who did the animal show went on a rant of how crazy Carol Baskin is and how they believe she murdered her husband. Then he started talking politics. I am a conservative republican, but I came to this facility to be entertained, not get a Fox News report Desantis in between animal acts.

Then they show a video of the owner begging us not to believe PETA’s accusations against them because everyone at PETA is out to get them. Let me tell you that I can firmly attest I didn’t need PETA to recognize how dirty the animal enclosures are, and that they deserve a citation for this. I love animals and I love to visit zoos and sanctuaries as I’ve visited many. And in my opinion This place deserves a solid F for FAIL.

Our family visited the Big Cat for the first time last so we wanted to share our thoughts since we were very impressed:

- Wonderful experience (great family memories)

- Very close up interaction and views of tigers, lemurs, birds, camels, and other rare animals

- Clean/organized facility, peaceful, rural location, but close to town

- Obviously donations/funding go directly for animal care (there are few employees and many volunteers, passionate and dedicated to the physical care and emotional well being of each animal)

- Their mission to rescue animals and provide them with a good home is definitely a place I want to support

- As a nonprofit they put their money back into the care of the animals

- The animals seemed happy very content. We watched the tigers play and the zebra, camel and buffalo race around playing tag. All the food given to the animals looked plentiful, healthy and fresh (fresh meat, fruits and vegetables

- We enjoyed the presentation and the enthusiasm of the owners and staff. We were also impressed with how the staff advocated for adopting dogs from shelters vs. retail stores or puppy mills.

- A great place for photographers and opportunities to feed the animals

- Our family drove up and down the coast visiting multiple towns and shops and the Big Cat had the best t-shirt designs (and quality) by far! We bought a few for ourselves and gifts

The Big Cat Habitat is truly a beautiful sanctuary for animals and for humans. We hope you will support them too:)

This place bills itself as a “habitat” and a “rescue” and informs you that they are a 501 c 3 charity. In reality it’s more like an old roadside zoo where animals are kept in substandard conditions and exploited for money.

The bears are kept in tiny habitat and look lethargic and depressed. The visitors are encouraged to feed the bears junk on a stick for $5 a piece. There doesn’t seem to be any imposed limit - I get it, a bear can consume a lot of junk.

The large cats are in slightly larger habitats which are still much smaller than any decent zoo would allow. The giant tortoises are in a tiny enclosed sand/dirt area with some dirty water. Every other animal we saw, the birds, the monkeys, the lemurs are in too-small cages without any access to the outside. I haven’t seen a zoo this low-quality in probably 30 years. I thought these were done away with.

The worst part of it was the show. The host, Clayton, let off a few tasteless jokes before deciding to rant at us about how wonderful a Governor DeSantis was and how wild animals had no chance of making it in the wild and could only survive in captivity (making no distinction between an institution that studies animals and keeps them in appropriate habitats and his zoo, which does neither). After this his mother came on and went on a diatribe about how horrible PETA and ASPCA was (“those people who show you kittens and puppies on TV with a sad song playing in the background actually euthanize puppies! And kittens!”) and about how we should “do our own research” (oy) and never give them any money. They kept mentioning that there will be a guy with a bucket at the exit asking for donations and advertising their “animal experiences” with their lemurs (“lemur in the native language means “ghost of the forest”—it does no such thing, it just means “ghost” and in Latin at that) and sloth, which has a separate fee of $300-$400 for 30 minutes, depending on the animal.

The show was … not good, with the two big cats, Mia the liger and Barry White the white tiger, jumping from post to post. Clayton talked a lot about giving treats but the entire time he was brandishing a long stick and a whip, which he at one point cracked.

Just the kind of attraction that really should have died out with the dinosaurs.

We recently visited the Big Cat Habitat & Sanctuary and were surprised by the exhibits and performance.

One can certainly see big cats, bears, and a host of other animals here, but calling it a "sanctuary" is a stretch. Most of the animals are caged in relatively confined areas that varied on cleanliness. Most zoos and sanctuaries have far larger exhibit/living areas for their animals.

We missed their bird show, but we did attend the big cat show. It is largely a circus act, and the "lion tamer" spent almost as much time talking politics as he did talking about the animals. They played a video of the owner who accused animal rights activists of being on the wrong side of animals' rights.

On display in their big cat show was a "liger." The announcer informed us that a "liger" does not exist in nature, i.e., lions and tigers will not mate together in the wild. A liger can only be created by a human putting a lion and tiger together such that the inevitable occurs.

We do not recommend visiting.

First of all we only came as this was represented as a rescue. It's not, they are using the animals for entertainment. They have sloth and lemur petting for sale as well as photography with animals for pay. They admit to purchasing animals for breeding and event attendance.

Some cages were well equipped while others were dirty. The Big Cat Show was about five minutes of poorly done show and 20 minutes of the "trainer's" personal political ramblings. While in the petting zoo the staff demanded everyone to the fence and then dumped in popcorn for the goats which immediately started resource guarding between the goats. We had to place our children behind us for their safety and hope to not take horns to the shins as we were unable to exit.

Skip this place and go to a zoo with a focus on actual conservation.

This was an absolutely wonderful place to visit to see exotic animals which otherwise would have been euthanized and not around to be enjoyed. When we went in we noticed the cleanliness of the habitats the animals were caged in. Unlike a zoo, you can get within 4 feet of the animals and see how truly large they are how magnificent they are. There is more to this place than just big cats. Monkeys, bears, birds, reptiles. This place has many interesting animals and well taken care of. Some of the animals performed but it was more a learning time for the visitors and the cats and dogs seemed to enjoy.

Animals are very well taken care of. The staff is wonderful and deeply cares for them. Thanks to their efforts many neglected animals have found a home where they can be well cared for.

What a wonderful place! The animals are all so well cared for. I liked how the training was explained in the show. I didn't know the difference between animal rights and animal welfare before.
Giving the cats and bears a treat was especially cool for my kids! Keep up the good work.

I own a healthy Sulcata tortoise. Your tortoises are not being cared for properly and are suffering.

So the place is basically just a sad local zoo. Animals look so sad and defeated, especially bears. I took my four kids there and we only managed to stay there for about 30 minutes. We are huge animal lovers and will never visit this place again. Definitely not a sanctuary, they exploit the animals.
