This place was well worth visiting. We toured the grounds and the house. We were fortunate to see the azaleas and camelias in bloom. The docent was very informative in the house. Beautiful ponds and flowers. Highly recommend!

This was a good stopping off place on a long road trip from Destin to Amelia Island! We bought a picnic a short distance away and then sat by the pretty lake in the picnic area which was very peaceful. Nice friendly welcome with map. Quite a simple house with a lovely view and some pretty gardens which were easy to walk around and relaxing.

We came here based on positive Trip Advisor reviews. The gardens (open Jan-Apr) are beautiful with views of Lake Hall. The house was open to visitors and they had a 20 minute video describing the family, house, and gardens. The best time to visit is when the azaleas are in full bloom. This year the azaleas are now past their peak, but the grounds are still lovely.

Alfred Maclay was a New York banker who visited Florida in 1923 and was enchanted with the plant life he found there. He bought this property for a winter home, and hired a staff to help him fulfil his life's dream of developing, over many years, a beautiful ornamental garden. He chose mainly flower varieties that would blossom when he and his wife were in residence there in the winter (from January to April). A wide brick path leads you from the parking area through the 28-acre gardens to the Maclays' winter house, which is sometimes open for a tour (It was open when we visited). There are other paths to a walled garden with a view on a reflecting pool, a secret garden, a black pond, a lakeside sitting area, a rolling lawn, and other areas. Alfred Maclay's widow and children gave the property to the state of Florida in 1953 and it's now a state park. It must require considerable upkeep. The peak season is usually around mid-March, but this was a very mild winter and when we were there at the end of February it felt like the peak had already passed. Still, there was plenty to see and experience. Maclay's purpose for the garden wasn't a lively show garden but a peaceful place with a sense of harmony with nature. My wife and I found it to be a fabulously peaceful and lovely place for a relaxed walk. A QR code takes you to a series of eleven short Youtube videos which constitute an audio guide. Our walk took us past a turtle and a small alligator as well.
After our leisurely walk through the garden, we drove a few hundred yards down the road to the parking area for the trailhead of some hiking trails. We chose the three-mile walk around Lake Overstreet, a lake whose shoreline remains undeveloped. Compared to our leisurely walk through the gardens, we took this trail rather briskly. We met several other couples and singles and the occasional dog along the way. This section of the state park wasn't ever owned by Maclay but was purchased in 1994. The trail is a wide dirt shared-use (bicycle and pedestrian) path through a hardwood forest; the path is well cleared and blazed, and mostly level. There are also some connected loop trails among steelhead ravines that we didn't take.
Between the gardens and the hiking trails, we spent about three hours at this state park, and enjoyed every minute.

This is a small, but cute state park that is similar to a botanical garden. While I was there, it was off-season, so few plants were in bloom and the hunting lodge was not open, but it was still enjoyable for wandering. I suspect that I missed a bit of it as my companion was bored, but I would definitely return.

Very nice clean and calm. The gardens are free out of season. Informative rangers. Swimming is allowed in the lake. There are a few scarecrows around the garden fun to watch

Visiting in August there were very few flowers, but the grounds were well cared for and it is still a pleasant place to visit. There are seating areas for relaxing and quiet trails. A wide brick walk leads from the parking area to the home and gardens. The home is only open for several months early in the year which probably coincides with the azaleas in bloom. There are many azaleas so during that season the displays are likely spectacular.

This is a very nice park for walking around and just to get outside. Take your mosquito repellant. The main highlight is the reflecting pool with a view of the lake. It was closed off for a wedding the day we went. If you wait long enough they will open it up. A lot of beautiful spots for photography. I would have stayed longer but it was too hot. My kid was bored, no playgrounds.

This is an interesting question that I don't know the answer to. When the Maclay's bought the property in 1923, there was simply a dirt road leading from Thomasville Road to a "simple hunting cabin" on the shore of Lake Hall. It is a lovely old home that served as the Maclay family's winter home.

Can you have a small wedding outside there on the lawn? If so, the cost?

The website states:
"Many brides and grooms get married in the beautiful gardens at Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park. For information about weddings in the Gardens, please call."
Just google "Maclay Gardens - Weddings" as TripAdvidor does not allow posts with phone numbers and web addresses.
