The area of north GA has always been something that will positively surprise and be very enjoyable - if you like nature and the different seasons.

Whether hiking or just driving the area, you are bound to be excited to see the wilderness. The falls and twisty roads tell you you are somewhere special.

Having a single entry for Chattahoochee National Forest would be analogous to having just one for "Germany". There are literally hundreds of places within the National Forest (and surrounding area) each worthy of its own entry. There are paved roads, backcountry roads, hiking trails, scenic areas, campgrounds (RV as well as primitive), state parks, waterfalls. Really, something for everyone of every category of physical ability.

If you just want to enjoy the beauty from the comfort of your car, you're in luck. For motorcycling, it's hard to beat. Just be careful; the roads will bite you if you get careless. If you want to truck off into the woods with a backpack and get lost for a few weeks, you can do that. If you're like me, of average physical ability, and you just like to spend a half-day hiking to a waterfall, you can spend a lifetime doing that and never see the same waterfall twice (although there are a number of them that I've visited multiple times). There are many books to guide you. My favorite is The Georgia Conservancy's Guide to the North Georgia Mountains. My copy dates to the early-90s but the roads and trails haven't changed that much. Some places are very much suited for the entire family; others you wouldn't even want to think about visiting with young children. Consider your pets' abilities, also, if you're planning to take Fido exploring with you.

I've been exploring the area (mostly east of Blue Ridge) for 30+ years. I'm NOT a hardcore fitness buff or outdoors expert. I just love nature and photography and I enjoy visiting places that are not particularly crowded. The possibilities here are nearly limitless. I stumbled upon this entry while doing a web search for "Three Forks Trail". Three Forks is in extreme northeastern Georgia east of Clayton and south of Highlands, NC. Of all of the places that I've visited in the mountains, this is one of my favorites. The key to any exploration is to know your abilities, carry food and water in the woods, and don't do stupid stuff (like get too close to the top of a waterfall). Be aware of the fact that cell service is limited (or non-existent) in many areas. So if you head off into the woods by yourself - not a particularly good idea - let someone know where you're going and when to expect to hear from you.

Above all - ENJOY the beauty and please don't trash the place.

The Chattahoochee National Forest covers 18 North Georgia counties and includes over 2,200 miles of rivers and streams. There are over 450 miles of hiking trails that range from easy to extremely strenuous so choose the one best suited for you. The beginning of the 2,174-mile Appalachian Trail is located here. There are also numerous waterfalls you can hike to and enjoy. My brother & I recently visited. We hiked Desota Falls, Panther Creek, Raven Falls, & Brasstown Bald. We had a great time and can’t wait to return. Just driving through this beautiful area will provide you with some of the most spectacular views in the country. Highly recommend!

This was a spur of the moment type of trip, we went looking for DeSoto Falls but ended up here? We were not really in heart of the forest but we saw a trail leading into it off of Highway 60 at northern Georgia and we decided to check it out. It was not an easy hike to say the least, lot of steep hills up but once we reached the overlook at 1.6 miles, it was worth it! There was not a sight of anybody when we were going up so we almost lost hope and turned around to leave when we decided to keep going. The trails gets thinner and thinner the more we went but WOW the overlook spot for the Wallalah Mountain was WORTH IT. I suggest this for anyone looking for a bit of a tough hike up but an easy hike down.

The variety of natural attractions Chattahoochee National Forest has to offer calls for making it some day a hiking destination easily for a week long vacation. Otherwise you literally do not know what to visit first. The trails are well organized and marked. The mountains are amazing and beautiful anytime of the year even in early March. Driving through the area is very pleasant as well.
